We research all relationships to the family of Elijah Moore, a native of North Carolina who was an early settler in Tunnel Hill, Johnson County, Illinois. His son, William Gardner Moore, Sr. married Mary Elizabeth Stonum.
Our ancestor was descended from the early Colonial William Stonum family of Northumberland County and North Farnum Parish of Virginia. Through her ancestors, Mary's family tree extends back to Edward Longshanks or Edward I - King of England. From his ancestry, she is descended from all the Royal family lines of Europe back to the Viking Kings of the first centrury.
Mary Elizabeth Stonum married William Gardner Moore, and became the matriarch of a large and colorful family with thousands of descendants living in 42 of the United States and more scattered abroad. The names of her children in order of their birth were: Martha Ann Minerva Moore Simmons; Isabelle Prudy "Belle" Moore Lenon; Nellie Albana Moore Webb; Charles Edward Moore; James Monroe Moore; David Cullen Moore; A. L. Moore; twins William Granville Moore and Nancy Jane Moore Jackson Carter; Lloyd Coleman Moore (Reverend); and Isaac Levi Moore.
Please contact us with any new information on our research. Should you choose to use these findings, please credit Robert McGrew, Patricia Moore Hoy, and Lynn Moore Callaly as the researchers. Happy reading, and we hope you solve a mystery today!

JOHNSON, WILLIAM WHIPPLE (1843-1914). William Whipple Johnson, West Texas entrepreneur, one of seven children of Ethan S. and Jane B. Johnson, was born in Ionia, Michigan, on October 11, 1843. He attended school in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and became active in business in Ionia shortly after 1860; he described himself as a hotel keeper in 1867. He formed a partnership with his father and his younger brother Harvey to provide general merchandise for the people of Ionia. The three were devastated economically in the general collapse of the national economy in 1873. Johnson moved his base of operations to Corsicana, Texas, in the late 1870s, probably in search of a refuge from his debts. At this time he also entered a short-lived first marriage. His second and lasting marriage was to Anna Fatzinger Campbell, a childhood friend who also had had an unsuccessful first marriage. Both the daughter and the son born of this second marriage died in childhood. By midsummer 1880 William and Harvey Johnson lived in Strawn. There Harvey became postmaster on September 13, 1880, and William became assistant postmaster on January 4, 1881. In Strawn the brothers became involved in horse and cattle ranching, the procuring and selling of cedar posts, retail merchandising, and land acquisition. In 1887 they established the Johnson Coal Mining Company south of Strawn. The purchaser of the extracted coal was to be the Texas and Pacific Railway, and the railroad agreed to build a spur line to the mine. The Johnson brothers jointly participated in the formation of a second company, the Palo Pinto Coal Mining Company, in November 1887. On January 30, 1888, Harvey died, but not before he sold his entire estate to his brother for one dollar.

The story of Fort Johnson and Sir William Johnson begins with his arrival in the Mohawk Valley as a young man to manage his uncle's estate, but he soon acquired land of his own. In 1749, he built a fieldstone house he called Fort Johnson, his residence for 14 years and the site of numerous Indian conferences. Johnson conferred regularly with the Iroquois, and he also met the representatives of tribes from New England and the Midwest. His negotiations with the Iroquois nations kept them on the side of the British during the French and Indian War, and the alliance continued during the War for Independence. The residence became home to son John Johnson from 1763-1774.
A couple weeks ago, an 18th century Toys and Games Workshop with Sharri Yaddaw was held on our back lawn. Sharri hosted an enthusiastic group of young people who learned all about the simple pleasures of toys and games, such as hoops, stilts and rope pulls, of colonial America. Her students will be back, this summer, to participate in Colonial Days.

34. Ancient Pi: Knowers Of The Universe
The concept of pi refers to the constant ratio of the diametercircumference of any circle; irrespective of the number of degrees contained within that circle. An article in the Science in Ancient Artwork Series by Charles william johnson.

Ancient Pi (

) to hundreds or even thousands of decimal places.
If we realize that the measurement of the ratio between the diameter and the circumference of a circle is entirely theoretical and speculative, then we may also realize that the result shall always represent an approximation. In fact, the very fact that pi is always expressed in terms of an unending fraction (with mathematicians searching it to the n th number of decimal places), should cause us to accept the idea that pi can only be an approximation. (As Lambert illustrated in 1767, " is not a rational number, i.e., it cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers"; Beckmann, p.100.)
Throughout history, the expression of pi has taken on many variations. Petr Beckmann (Cfr., A History of (pi) Golem , 1971), offers an exemplary analysis of the concept throughout history. The Babylonians ; the Egyptians Siddhantas Brahmagupta Chinese Liu Hu i, 3.141024

William H. Johnson Civil War Letters
T wenty-eight letters, 1861-1863, of Union soldier William H. Johnson, a sergeant in Co. E, Seventh Connecticut Volunteers, originated from various locations in coastal South Carolina and Georgia and were sent home to his wife, Hannah J. Johnson. South Carolina places represented include Daufuskie Island, Beaufort, Hilton Head Island, James Island, and Morris Island. Over the course of two years of war, Johnson remained optimistic about the final outcome of the conflict. Writing from Daufuskie Island on 26 January [18]62, he predicted a speedy end to hostilities—"There doesn't seem to be any doubt as to the result of the pending engagement—and if we are successful it is the opinion of a good many that the war can't last long....It is my opinion if we do not lick the Rebels in 6 months more the difficulty will be settled either by ourselves or the interventions of foreign powers. In either case we should probably return home—if the former—in peace, and if the latter, for home protection." In addition to talk of war, Johnson's letters discuss the health of the troops, convey business advice, and express his love for daughters Mary and Lillian. While in the army, he earned extra money by speculating on watches, chewing tobacco, cigars, and other goods forwarded to him by family and friends at the North. Writing from Ft. Pulaski on 19 May [18]62, he suggested—"I could sell three thousand Cigars and three or four Gross of Chewing Tobacco in two days for cash and make from 40 to 50 dollars on it....I am glad that the watches are a coming as I think I can dispose of them to good advantage."
