If, instead of welcoming inquiry and criticism, the admirers of a great author accept his writings as authoritative, both in their excellences and in their defects, the most serious injury is done to truth. In matters of philosophy and science, authority has ever been the great opponent of truth. A despotic calm is usually the triumph of error. In the republic of the sciences, sedition and even anarchy are beneficial in the long run to the greatest happiness of the greatest number. William Stanley Jevons British logician, economist, and philosopher of science. Born in Liverpool, and learned at University College, London. As a disciple of de Morgan, he contributed to the development of symbolic logic created by Boole and de Morgan. He noticed the mechanical character of logical reasoning; he proposed the "logical alphabets" for Boolean logic (which utilize, in the contemporary terminology, the disjunctive normal form of propositional logic), and devised the "Logical Machine" (with a keyboard for input) which perfoms the process of logical reasoning for the Aristotelian syllogism, somehow extended to disjunctive propositions too. He was also a powerful advocate of the probabilistic induction based on the "inverse method" due to Bayes and Laplace, and defended by de Morgan in the Britain. He emphasized the uncertain and probabilistic character of scientific knowledge. The Principles of Science (1874) , in which his view is systematically expounded, is important as one of the classical works on the philosophy of science in the 19th century.

William Stanley Jevons William Stanley Jevons was born in Liverpool, England. He studied chemistry and botany at University College. He was chair of political economy at University College until his retirement in 1880. At the age of 46, Jevons drowned while swimming. Carl Menger in Austria, Leon Walrus in France, and William Stanley Jevons in England separately yet simultaneously developed the theory of marginal utility to understand and to explain consumer behavior. As a result of their work, economics underwent a major theoretical revolution, known as the marginal or neoclassical revolution. Jevons was very influenced by utilitarianism which is an ethical theory which states that questions of social policy and individual morality should be answered by calculating the consequences of policies or actions on the utility of individuals. That which maximizes utility is the moral one. The early utilitarians were Jeremy Bentham, James Mill, and John Stuart Mill. Jevons was was a strong proponent of mathmatical economics. In 1871, he stated that," our science must be mathmatical, simply because it deals with quantities." However, he was aware that mathematical economics was not an exact science. According to Jevons," Many persons entertain a prejudice against mathematical language, arising out of a confusion between the ideas of a mathematical science and an exact science...but in reality, there is no such thing as an exact science, except in a comparative sense."

    Reproduction and Scarcity
Hidden Agenda of the "Marginal Revolution"
The 'marginal revolution' should not be seen as a sudden shock; it should rather be described as a gradual process. Jevons should be seen as a transitional economist. Autonomous intellectual developments, however, can provide only an unsatisfactory explanation. We argue that historical actors perceive a changed environment and conclude that existing theories no longer are applicable. For this purpose, we examine the difference between the perception of the environment in Malthus and Ricardo on the one hand, and Jevons on the other - a shift in perspective from a reproductive environment with internal scarcity towards a non-reproductive environment with external scarcity. In a reproductive environment the actions of human beings are responsible for the rise of scarcity, whereas in a non-reproductive environment, scarcity is determined externally.

    74. William Stanley Jevons And The Australian Climate
william Stanley jevons and the climate of Australia. Neville Nicholls. Papers andcorrespondence of william Stanley jevons, Vol. 1. Macmillan, London, 243 pp.
    http://www.bom.gov.au/bmrc/clfor/cfstaff/nnn/jevons.htm
William Stanley Jevons and the climate of Australia Neville Nicholls Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre, Melbourne, Australia Australian Meteorological Magazine, 47, 285-293, December 1998 Abstract William Stanley Jevons published the first thorough and scientific study of the climate of Australia, in 1859 after only five years in Australia (working as an assayer for the Mint in Sydney). Excerpts from the Jevons study, along with comments on his conclusions from a late 20 th Introduction The first thorough description of the Australian climate was published in 1859 by William Stanley Jevons, a gold assayer at the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint. Jevons was described by Lord Lionel Robbins as "one of the great Englishmen of the nineteenth century" (Robbins, 1932), not because of his meteorological work, but because he developed what has become known as the marginal utility theory of value, and because of his contributions to statistics and logic. His writings on economics were so well regarded that Lord Maynard Keynes delivered a centenary lecture on Jevons's life and work as an economist and statistician (Keynes, 1936). Inoue and White (1993) provide a complete bibliography of works published by Jevons. Jevons developed his initial interest in economic questions during five years he spent as a young man in Sydney (White, 1982), and his first empirical work in economics seems to have been inspired by his interest in meteorology during his stay in Sydney (Stigler, 1982). He interrupted his studies in natural sciences at University College, London, in 1854 to take up the assayer position in Sydney. After five years in Sydney he returned to London where he soon completed two seminal papers, "General mathematical theory of political economy" and "A serious fall in the value of gold". He was appointed to a chair of political economy at Owens College, Manchester in 1866 and moved to University College, London, in 1876. His other notable works include

SUMMARY This article has two purposes. One is to answer the question whether Philosophy has influenced upon the economists usually recognized as those who founded the Marginalist Revolution in Economic Analysis or not. The other is to fix precisely the right sense of philosophical influence in Economic Analysis. As regards the first purpose, the considerations are restricted to William Jevons. A concise reference to Léon Walras and Karl Menger is included. About the second purpose, J. A. Schumpeter's negative opinion concerning relationship between Philosophy and Economic Analysis is discussed.

    http://www.igreens.org.uk/coal_running_out_in_1865.htm
Home Up Individualist Environmentalists iGreens William Stanley Jevons was one of the greatest economists of the 19th century. With Menger and Walras he was one of the three co-discoverers of marginal utility theory, the idea that as we consume more of something the value of each incremental unit diminishes. We value a glass of water to stop us dying of thirst much more than the same glass to help top up our swimming pools. However, despite his great mind he fell into the Malthusian trap in The Coal Question (1865). In this influential book he treated coal as the essential resource for the British industrial economy and argued that it was an exhaustible resource. He worried about "our present rapid multiplication when brought into comparison with a fixed amount of material resource" and feared that Britain's industrial growth would come to a halt because its coal reserves were running out. Worse still he argued "... it is useless the think of substituting any other kind of fuel for coal." "... some day our coal seams [may] be found emptied to the bottom, and swept clean like a coal-cellar. Our fires and furnaces ... suddenly extinguished, and cold and darkness ... left to reign over a depopulated country."
