Sir James Jeans Sir James Jeans, noted British scientist, has given a physical analysis of musical sounds, in what is considered to be the best exposition on the subject, a book of great intellectual stature. His aim has been to convey precise information, in a simple non-technical way, that will be of interest to the amateur as well as the serious student of music. The discussion begins with an explanation of the development of the human faculty of hearing. It is established that each sound can be represented by a curve. An examination of the general properties of sound-curves follows. For example, why do some sounds produce pleasure when they reach our ears and some pain? How do we retain the pleasurable qualities in the sound-curve, as it passes on from one stage of electronic equipment to another? To what extent is it possible to prevent unpleasant qualities from contaminating the curve? These and other pertinent questions on the transmission and reproduction of sound-curves are answered in a discussion of tuning-forks and pure tones. The various methods of producing sound, and the qualities of the sounds produced, are further discussed as they relate to vibrations of strings and harmonics, and vibrations of air. Harmony and discord are also considered. In the final chapters on the concert room and hearing, the discussion focuses on the transmission of sound from its source to the eardrum and from the eardrum to the brain. A general theory of acoustics is also covered as well as acoustical analyses.

Subject: Jeans; Unreasonable Effectiveness of Math [was: Stark's Number Theory] Author: wgd@martigny.ai.mit.edu Date: http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez ); and use of number theory in statistical mechanics, cryptography, coding theory, random number generators, computer graphics, etc, e.g. see the interesting collection of surveys The unreasonable effectiveness of number theory. Edited by Stefan A. Burr. Papers from the AMS Short Course held in Orono, Maine, August 67, 1991. Proceedings of Symposia in Applied Mathematics, 46. Does anyone know of any historical work along these lines, e.g. examining connections among mathematical motivations that later led to physical applications? Perhaps some of the original mathematics had purposely hidden physical motivations due to the distaste for applications by 'pure' mathematicians (e.g. Hardy's "Apology"). -Bill Dubuque The Math Forum

[Under Construction] The following table lists the selections by the following:
"Savants Select Most Influential Volumes," English Journal 25 (1936). [25 selections each by Edward Weeks, editor of the Atlantic Monthly Press ; Charles A. Beard, historian; John Dewey, philosopher]
Malcolm Cowley and Bernard Smith, Books That Changed Our Minds (1939). [12 selections]
Horace Shipp, Books That Moved the World (1945). [10 selections]
Robert B. Downs, Books That Changed the World (1956) [16 selections] Note: Some of these lists were compiled with restrictions. Dewey, Weeks, and Beard were asked to "select the twenty-five most influential books published in the last fifty years." This means between 1874 and 1936. Downs, on the other hand, writes, "For practical reasons, it was arbitrarily decided to restrict the discussion to books in science and the social sciences, omitting such vastly important fields as religion, philosophy, and literature." Science and Religion welcome mysticism beliefs ... search This page examines relevant extracts from the work of the following physicists. Many quotes have been taken from the book Quantum Questions , (new Science Library, 1985) edited by Ken Wilber, including comments from the editor himself. Click on any physicist below for a sample of quotes. Where necessary, I have paraphrased Ken Wilber, but avoided littering the text with repetitive page references; the book is an excellent source of material, and well worth reading for further information. "..modern physics offers no positive support (let alone proof) for a mystical worldview. Nevertheless, every one of the physicists in this volume was a mystic. They simply believed, to a man, that if modern physics no longer objects to a religious worldview, it offers no positive support either; properly speaking, it is indifferent to all that." (preface). It was a source of irritation to many physicists, Eddington included, that the "new age" audience seemed firmly convinced that the new physics, delving as it did into seemingly inexplicable sub-atomic behaviour, somehow supported or proved mysticism, when clearly, a scientific proof of God had not then, nor has yet been achieved. Nevertheless, physics does now move in an area where ideas and imagination seem more important to make headway when digging deeper, than when decoding the perhaps more easily understood phenomena behind the movements of planets and the forces in magnetic fields.

The Holy Qur'aan - A Miracle The Holy Qur'aan - A Miracle
By: Muhammad Umair Bhatti Who Descended The Qur'aan?
The Holy Qur'aan is the last book descended by Allah towards the mankind. It was revealed on the last prophet of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) through the Archangel Gabriel . Allah says in the Holy Qur'aan:
“No Doubt, Only We have revealed the Scripture (Qur'aan) and We are it’s Guard.”
Allah says on the other place in the Holy Qur'aan: “This is a Scripture (Qur'aan), the revelations, whereof are perfected and then explained from One Wise (Allah), Informed.”
If the Holy Qur'aan was a book from other than Allah then there would have been great incongruity in it, but it is perfect and only from Allah. “Will they not then ponder on the Qur'aan? If it had been from other than Allah they would have found therein much incongruity.”
Sir James Jeans testimony:
It is the incident of 1909 and it was Sunday. A Muslim scholar Anayat-ul-lah met Professor James Jeans (He was a famous Astronomer in Cambridge University in those days and was a Christian). During discussion Anayat-ul-lah asked Professor James Jeans to listen a verse from the Holy Qur'aan. Sir James Jeans agreed and Anayat-ul-lah recited the following two verses from the Holy Qur'aan:

John W. Burgeson wrote on 2nd March:
Eddington was a Quaker, and 20th Century Quakers have not
generally been in the tradition of historic Christianity. If he
were, he probably would not have said in 1928 "that religion
first became possible for a reasonable scientific man about the
year 1927". This was the year of the "final overthrow" of the
yoke of strict causality by Heisenberg, Bohr, Born and others.
Both Eddington and Jeans welcomed the new physics as deliverance
from the "prison" of a mechanistic universe. [My source for this
is E.N. Hiebert, "Modern physics and Christian faith", in "God and Nature" edited by Lindberg and Numbers, Berkeley: Univ of California Press, 1966, 424-447.] I also looked up Colin Russell's "Cross-currents" (IVP, 1985). This has several references to Eddington and Jeans.
