Ioan James was a Foundation Scholar at St Paul's School. From there he won an Open Scholarship to the University of Oxford where he studied mathematics at Queen's College in the topology school of Henry Whitehead After completing his education at Oxford, James went to the United States for the year 1954-55. He did this having been awarded a Commonwealth Fund Fellowship which enabled him to spend time at Princeton University, the University of California at Berkeley and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Returning to England, James was Tapp Research Fellow at Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge in 1956 before returning to the University of Oxford. Back at Oxford in 1957, James was appointed Reader in Pure Mathematics, a post which he held until 1969. From 1959 until 1969 he was a Senior Research Fellow at St John's College. In 1970 James was appointed to the famous chair of Savilian Professor of Geometry. The chair was founded by Savile in 1619 and first occupied by Briggs James was elected a Fellow of New College Oxford in 1970 when he became Savilian Professor of Geometry and he continues to hold the fellowship. Britain and the German Question, 1900-1990 - HY 13620 Essay titles Essay one What were the principal causes of Anglo-German tension between 1900 and 1914? What were Britain’s principal aims with regard to Germany at the Paris Peace Conference? How successful was Britain in achieving them between 1919 and 1923? What were the roots of the British policy of 'Appeasement'? To what extent are theories of the ‘balance of power’ the key to understanding British policy towards Germany prior to 1945? How did British planning for post-war Germany evolve after 1939? (Note: essay one is to be c. 2,500 words in length and is due Tuesday 11th November) Essay two Why did Britain support the creation of the West German state in 1949? Why did Britain help engineer West German membership of NATO by 1955? 'More a clash of personalities than a symptom of divergent interests in Anglo-German relations'. Discuss in relation to the governments of Harold Macmillan and Konrad Adenauer between 1957 and 1963? How did the issue of détente with the Soviet Union affect British-West German relations between 1955 and 1975?

Remarkable Physicists
From Galileo to Yukawa
The 250 years from the second half of the 17th century saw the birth of modern physics and its growth into one of the most successful of the sciences. The reader will find here the lives of 55 of the most remarkable physicists from that era described in brief biographies. All the characters profiled have made important contributions to physics, either through their ideas, through their teaching or in other ways. The emphasis is on their varied life-stories, not on the details of their achievements, but when read in sequence the biographies, which are organised chronologically, convey in human terms something of the way in which physics was created. Scientific and mathematical detail is kept to a minimum, so the reader who is interested in physics, but perhaps lacks the background to follow technical accounts, will find this collection an inviting and easy path through the subject's modern development.

Frobenius Algebras and 2-D Topological Quantum Field Theories
This book describes a striking connection between topology and algebra, namely that 2D topological quantum field theories are equivalent to commutative Frobenius algebras. The precise formulation of the theorem and its proof is given in terms of monoidal categories, and the main purpose of the book is to develop these concepts from an elementary level, and more generally serve as an introduction to categorical viewpoints in mathematics. Rather than just proving the theorem, it is shown how the result fits into a more general pattern concerning universal monoidal categories for algebraic structures. Throughout, the emphasis is on the interplay between algebra and topology, with graphical interpretation of algebraic operations, and topological structures described algebraically in terms of generators and relations. The book will prove valuable to students or researchers entering this field who will learn a host of modern techniques that will prove useful for future work.

Personal thoughts on Ioan's performance in

TITANIC

So if you can't tell from the pictures who Ioan played in the movie Titanic, read on. Ioan plays Officer Lowe, who commands lifeboat 14. After the ship goes down, his is the only boat to return to the site to rescue survivors. Harold Lowe has always been a hero in my heart, and I respect him greatly. Ioan shines in this role. He portrays Lowe just how history books have painted him. You can see the desperation and horror in his eyes as he realizes that he waited too long for the cries in the water to die down. I created this site because of Ioan's exemplary performance as one of my heroes in Titanic. No one will ever play Harold Lowe better than he did.
In the movie, Lowe rescues Rose from the freezing water, and even brings her coffee (or tea) while on the Carpathia. Ioan fans always say.. "To hell with Leo, take Ioan!" I agree, that's what she should have done! He *did* save her life. :-) (Yes, I do know the difference between fantasy and reality. =) )

Hugh Jackman Tipped for Bond Role
27 October 2003 (WENN)
Australian actor Hugh Jackman is the new favorite to take over from Pierce Brosnan as the next James Bond. Brosnan plans to hang up the superspy's famous tuxedo when filming concludes on the next installment in the series - and X-Men star Jackman is thought to be top of the list of potential replacements. A source at 007 movie makers Eon says, "A lost of possible successors has been drawn up, and Hugh is at the top. He's got everything the producers are looking for - dark good looks, an athletic build, a sense of humor and box-office clout. At 35, he is also the right age." British actors Clive Owen Ioan Gruffudd Jeremy Northam and Paul Bettany have all been put in the frame - but they have now reportedly been eliminated. The source explains, "Owen lacks the necessary lightness of touch to make Bond a box-office success." While Bettany is "strawberry blond - and there's never been a blond 007". Bond director
