Nathan Jacobson was known as Jake by all around him. His mother was Pauline Rosenberg and his father was Charles Jacobson (at least this was what Jacobson calls his "Ellis Island name"). It was a Jewish family, and Nathan was born in the Jewish ghetto of Warsaw. In fact he was actually born on 5 October but this was wrongly converted to 8 September which is now the date which appears on all official documents and the latter incorrect date has now been accepted as his official birthday. Nathan had a brother Solomon who was about eighteen months older. The two boys began their elementary schooling in Warsaw where they encountered discrimination with Jewish children required to sit on special benches separated from Polish children. When Nathan was five years old his father emigrated to the United States leaving his family behind in Warsaw until he had earned sufficient money for them to make the trip. Charles bought a small grocery store in Nashville, Tennessee and there he lived in a small room at the rear. It took him two years to save enough money to pay for his family's passage and then Nathan, with his mother and brother, made the trip [4]:-

(Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Nathan Jacobson 's family moved from Poland to the United States when he was seven years old. The family first settled in Alabama, then moved to Mississippi and finally Georgia. Jacobson entered the University of Alabama and, in 1930, was awarded a B.A. He then went to Princeton where he studied for his doctorate, which was awarded in 1934. Jacobson's career began with relatively short periods in a number of universities throughout the United States. He spent 1934-35 at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton. Then the following session 1935-36 he spent at Bryn Mawr. Jacobson had heard Emmy Noether lecture in Princeton but she died in the spring of 1935, before Jacobson joined the staff at Bryn Mawr where Emmy Noether had been teaching. Session 1936-37 was spent by Jacobson at the University of Chicago where Dickson was working. Then the University of North Carolina was home to him for a number of years. Appointed in 1937 he became an assistant professor there in 1938, then in 1941 an associate professor. In 1943 Jacobson was appointed to Johns Hopkins University where Zariski was on the Faculty.

Nathan Jacobson Dies at 89; A Leader in Abstract Algebra
Dr. Nathan Jacobson, a renowned mathematician who developed fundamental theorems and concepts and wrote many widely used textbooks, died on Sunday at his home in Hamden, Conn., near New Haven. He was 89. Dr. Jacobson, an emeritus professor of mathematics at Yale, was regarded as one of the world's leading researchers in abstract algebra. He was best known for his research in basic algebraic structures called rings. Among his leading contributions in this area were the Jacobson Density Theorem, a fundamental theorem in the discipline, and the Jacobson radical, a mathematical structure that plays an important role in analyzing rings. ''If you understand the Jacobson radical, then you have an entree into understanding the ring more completely,'' said Dr. Michael Rosen, Dr. Jacobson's son-in-law, who is a professor of mathematics at Brown University. ''It's part of the algebraic language one learns.'' Dr. Jacobson was also known for his political efforts on behalf of Jewish mathematicians from the Soviet Union, many of whom he helped bring to the United States. In the early 1970's, when he was a vice president of the International Mathematical Union, he became embroiled in a battle with the organization's other vice president, L. S. Pontrjagin of the Soviet Union, over that nation's refusal to allow many of its mathematicians, mostly Jews, to address or even attend meetings of the International Congress of Mathematicians. The matter was never officially resolved.
