    Aristarchus of Samos
(ca. 310-230 BC) He was very knowledgeable in all sciences, especially astronomy and mathematics. He discovered an improved sundial, with a concave hemispherical circle. He was the first to formulate the Copernican hypotheses and is sometimes called the Ancient Copernican He countered the nonparallax objection by asserting that the stars to be so far distant that parallax was not measurable. Wrote On the Sizes and Distances of the Sun and Moon . In it he observed that when the moon is half full, the angle between the lines of sight to the sun and the moon is less than a right angle by 1/30 of a quadrant. From this he concluded that the distance from the earth to the sun is more than 18 but less than 20 times the distance from the earth to the moon. (Actual ). Without trigonometry he was aware of and used the fact that He also made other trigonometic estimates without trigonometry. ARCHIMEDES Apollonius of Perga
(ca 262 BC - 190 BC) Apollonius was born in Perga in Pamphilia (now Turkey), but was possibly educated in Alexandria where he spent some time teaching. Very little is known of his life. He seems to have felt himself a rival of Archimedes. In any event he worked on similar problems. He was known as the ``great geometer" because of his work on conics.

Hypsicles of Alexandria wrote a treatise on regular polyhedra. He is the author of what has been called Book XIV of Euclid 's Elements , a work which deals with inscribing regular solids in a sphere. What little is known of Hypsicles' life is related by him in the preface to the so-called Book XIV. He writes that Basilides of Tyre came to Alexandria and there he discussed mathematics with Hypsicles' father. Hypsicles relates that his father and Basilides studied a treatise by Apollonius on a dodecahedron and an icosahedron in the same sphere and decided that Apollonius 's treatment was not satisfactory. In the so-called Book XIV Hypsicles proves some results due to Apollonius . He had clearly studied Apollonius 's tract on inscribing a dodecahedron and an icosahedron in the same sphere and clearly had, as his father and Basilides before him, found it poorly presented and Hypsicles attempts to improve on Apollonius 's treatment.

Hypsicles lived in Alexandria. He studied arithmetical progressions, and wrote treatises on a number of mathematical and astronomical topics:
"On polyhedrons": Extant. Contains eight interesting propositions on the relations between regular dodecahedrons and regular icosahedrons inscribed in the same sphere. This book is a continuation of Euclid's Elements, and is generally known as Book XIV of that work.
"On the harmony of the spheres": Lost.
"Polygonal numbers": Described as sums of arithmetical progressions, the ratio of which is equal to the number of sides less two of the corresponding polygonals.
"On risings": Calculates the length of each day of the year in Alexandria. The ecliptic is divided into 360?. The time of rising of each constellation in the zodiac circle at Alexandria is calculated on the basis of differential tables, after the Chaldaean manner, rather than by the trigonometric tables of Hipparchus. This treatise is extremely valuable, for it represents the link between the astronomers of Chaldaea and the Hellenistic Greeks.

Hypsicles also wrote On the Ascension of Stars . In this work he was the first to divide the Zodiac into 360 . He says The circle of the zodiac having been divided into equal arcs, let each of the arcs be called a spatial degree, and likewise, if the time taken by the zodiac circle to return from a point to the same point is divided into equal times, let each of the times be called a temporal degree. Hypsicles considers two problems in this work. Given the ratio of the longest to the shortest day at any place, how long does it take any given sign of the zodiac to rise there?
