Propoganda. It's a funny thing.
Some of those things people believe Nostrodamus said about Hitler and trot out as 'proof' of the accuracy of his prophecies are actually old WWII propoganda. Hitler had encouraged occultism in his own propoganda, and had cited occult and astrological writings to jutify the supernatural mandate of his Reich. The Allies propoganda push included printing up copies of Nostradamus with altered verses regarding 'Hister' and his 'prophecized' defeat. Nowadays these verses are still trotted out by those magicians among us who wish to 'prove' the legitimacy of Nostradomus, and by extension, their own superpowers. Propoganda, if applied judiciously, can keep the truth stained for a very long time. Hypatia of Alexandria would be an extraordinary woman in any age.
She was, arguably, the last truly illuminated mind of the classical age.
She was the head of the Library of Alexandria.
This would be like being the head of Harvard, the Louvre, and NASA all at once, but even bigger...
Not only was the Library a storehouse of knowledge, but it was also a school and a museum and a laboratory.

Ypatia ) AD Of the more than 300 listed mathematicians of ancient Greece , about 12% were women. Most of them were connected with the Pythagorean School and of Ionian origin. This number is not larger in our modern times and shows that the situation of women in ancient Greece was not worse or better than in our times. The first "known" mathematician Aithra, leads the list of both men and women. The last important mathematician in the Greek line is Ypatia. According to modern Greek pronunciation, we have used the spelling Ypatia rather than Hypatia which fits better with classical Greek pronunciation. Ypatia of Alexandria (350-370 to 415 AD) was one of the first women to make a substantial contribution to the development of mathematics. ( history page of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, St Andrews Scotland) Ypatia was the daughter of the mathematician and philosopher Theon of Alexandria and it is fairly certain that she studied mathematics under the guidance and instruction of her father. Ypatia became head of the Platonist school at Alexandria in about 400 AD. There and in Athens she lectured on mathematics and in particular the philosophy of Neoplatonism. Ypatia based her teachings on those of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism, and Iamblichus who was a developer of Neoplatonism around 300 AD. She was described by all commentators as a charismatic teacher (and also very beauty) and hundreds of students visited her lectures.

http://www.informationblast.com/Hypatia_of_Alexandria.html
Hypatia of Alexandria
Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 370 - ) was a neo-Platonic philosopher and mathematician, who was murdered by Christian monks . Several works are attributed to her by later sources, including commentaries on Diophantus 's Arithmetica , on Apollonius 's Conics and on Ptolemy 's works, but none have survived. She was the daughter of Theon , the last fellow of the Museum of Alexandria, which was adjacent to or included the main Library of Alexandria . Hypatia did not teach in the Museum, but received her pupils in her own private home. Theophilus , the patriarch of Alexandria, had destroyed all "pagan temples" in the city in (as requested by a decree of the Emperor Theodosius ), which may have included the Museum and certainly included the Serapeum (a temple and "daughter library" to the Great Library). The Museum was the "Temple of the Muses", so it was a temple according to Theodosius' decree. Hypatia clearly lived during a power struggle between pagans and tolerant Christians on the one side, and dogmatic Christians who demanded the final destruction of paganism on the other. Hypatia herself was a pagan, but was respected by many Christians, and exalted by some (though by no means all) later Christian authors as a symbol of virtue, often portrayed as a life-long virgin. These later accounts should not be seen as strict historical records, though, as they often contradict each other. Her contemporary Socrates Scholasticus in his Ecclesiastical History portrays her as a follows:
"There was a woman at Alexandria named Hypatia, daughter of the philosopher Theon, who made such attainments in literature and science, as to far surpass all the philosophers of her own time. Having succeeded to the school of Plato and Plotinus, she explained the principles of philosophy to her auditors, many of whom came from a distance to receive her instructions. On account of the self-possession and ease of manner, which she had acquired in consequence of the cultivation of her mind, she not unfrequently appeared in public in presence of the magistrates. Neither did she feel abashed in going to an assembly of men. For all men on account of her extraordinary dignity and virtue admired her the more."

Hypatia of Alexandria
Hypatia was a charismatic educationalist born in Alexandria on 370 AD. She was the daughter of the philosopher Theon, who imparted to his daughter the knowledge of mathematics. She helped her father compose his eleven part observations on Ptolemy's Almagest. She is also believed to have helped her father produce a version of Euclid's Elements which eventually became the foundation for all subsequent editions of Euclid. She wrote commentaries on Diophantus's Arithmetica, on Apollonius's Conics and on the astronomical works of Ptolemy's. She lectured on mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and mechanics. She is the earliest woman in recorded history to have made such a profound contribution to the development of mathematics, science and philosophy. She based her tradition on the teachings of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism, and presented these ideas with a greater emphasis on the importance of science than anyone before her. In 400 Hypatia became the head of the Platonist school. Her accomplishments and discoveries far exceeded those of her contemporaries. She was an extraordinary woman, who had cultivated her mind far beyond any other woman. All accounts describe her as extremely dignified and virtuous. Even though she taught many prominent Christians, and she was greatly admired by many monks, some Christians of the time began to associate her with paganism because of her extraordinarily intelligence. She was soon to become the focus for riots involving Christians and non-Christians alike.

She was also a pagan who refused to convert to the new Christian religion. Hypatia (c370 415) was the daughter of mathematician, Theon who was the last librarian of the fabled Library of Alexandria. Hypatia's scientific inventions - according to the letters of one of her pupils - included the hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of liquids, the plane astrolabe that measures astronomical positions and solves spherical astronomical problems, as well as several methods of distillation. In addition she was a noted lecturer and writer. Her Arithmetica was a 13-volume definitive study of algebra. None of her work survived her murder and the destruction of the libarary In 389 AD, Christian religious fanatics who felt scientific study was antithetical to religious dogma burned the famed Serapeum Library of Alexandria and in 412 AD, a group of monks inspired by Cyril, Patriarch of Alexander who, it is said was unreasonablyjealous of Hypatia's fame and influence, especially because she was a woman, killed her in a terrible manner. (He was later canonized by the Roman Catholic church.) Her torturous death - described in detail by Christian historian Socrates Scholasticus - was at the hands of Parabolands monks of the Church of St. Cyril of Jerusalem who ripped the flesh from her bones with sharp shells while she was sill alive, cut her into pieces and then burned the flesh into ashes. Such religious fanatics would lead the glowing western civilization into the thousand-year-long Dark Ages in which women in particular should study for causation and propagation.

Hypatia
Online Resources Texts: Hypatia Texts: Hypatia Book Series Used Books: Hypatia ... Are you an Author? Dear Future People by Anne Nolting Dear Future People is a novel which describes the climax of the Hellenic Age in Egypt. Events follow historic accounts of the civil war between Rome and Constantinople, the destruction of the Temple of Serapis, the ethnic cleansing and massacre of Gothic youth, and a trip down the Nile to seek a prophesy for Emperor Theodosius. Hypatia, a woman, was destined to stand at the center of this time of political power struggle. In translation, quotes from the period are woven into the story. Hypatia was born in the later part of the Roman Empire, an era when women were not free to pursue careers. This was a time when orthodox belief effectively wiped out centuries of scientific discovery. Ancient Greek works were torched and scholars were murdered. Hypatia was the last proprietor of the Hellenic Age wonder, the Library of Alexandria. She is portrayed as a young adult facing the issues of a changing world. The reader will discover uncanny parallels to many current situations within the United States and, indeed, the world. Hypatia, a real, historically documented heroine, is a find for today's young adults who are searching for strong, non-fiction role models.

Hypatia of Alexandria
Written by
Maria Dzielska
Translated by F. Lyra
Published by Harvard University Press Anyone interested in the classical world has heard of Hypatia of Alexandria, one of the most accomplished women of the classical age, indeed, of any age. She was extremely well educated, known for her prowess in math, astronomy, and philosophy, particularly. Living in Alexandria during the end of the fourth century, Hypatia is known primarily through the letters left from her student, Synesius. Unfortunately, history has erased much of her life; we know a few details of her life and death, but only enough to fascinate readers, not enough to satisfy. Dzielska's major claim is that Hypatia, a Greek pagan, supported the "wrong" Christian political faction and ended up dead because of it. The parallels with Socrates often make Hypatia the subject of scrutiny. Both were seen as dangerous by some elements within their local governments and both lived in some ways outside the status quo, holding beliefs that would be dangerous to some. Both were also killed - Socrates executed formally, and Hypatia torn to pieces by a raging crowd and the library burned. History has never been sure who exactly was behind Hypatia's death or if it was planned or just mass hysteria, but surviving texts claim that it at least had something to do with certain of the elements in the Alexandrian government. Why exactly they would be threatened by her and which faction exactly was behind the mob is unknown. In many cases, as Dzielska points out, we have evidence of individuals with whom she
