Christiaan Huygens : 1629 - 1693 Christiaan Huygens also spelled Christian Huyghens (b. April 14, 1629, The Hagued. July 8, 1695, The Hague), Dutch mathematician, astronomer, and physicist, who founded the wave theory of light, discovered the true shape of the rings of Saturn, and made original contributions to the science of dynamicsthe study of the action of forces on bodies. Huygens was from a wealthy and distinguished middle-class family. His father, Constantijn Huygens , a diplomat, Latinist, and poet, was the friend and correspondent of many outstanding intellectual figures of the day, including the scientist and philosopher From an early age, Huygens showed a marked mechanical bent and a talent for drawing and mathematics. Some of his early efforts in geometry impressed Descartes , who was an occasional visitor to the Huygens' household. In 1645 Huygens entered the University of Leiden, where he studied mathematics and law. Two years later he entered the College of Breda, in the midst of a furious controversy over the philosophy of Descartes. Although Huygens later rejected certain of the Cartesian tenets including the identification of extension and body, he always affirmed that mechanical explanations were essential in science, a fact that later was to have an important influence on his mathematical interpretation of both light and gravitation.

Christiaan Huygens came from an important Dutch family. His father Constantin Huygens had studied natural philosophy and was a diplomat. It was through him that Christiaan was to gain access to the top scientific circles of the times. In particular Constantin had many contacts in England and corresponded regularly with Mersenne and was a friend of Descartes Tutored at home by private teachers until he was 16 years old, Christiaan learned geometry, how to make mechanical models and social skills such as playing the lute. His mathematical education was clearly influenced by Descartes who was an occasional visitor at the Huygens' home and took a great interest in the mathematical progress of the young Christiaan. Christiaan Huygens studied law and mathematics at the University of Leiden from 1645 until 1647. Van Schooten tutored him in mathematics while he was in Leiden. From 1647 until 1649 he continued to study law and mathematics but now at the College of Orange at Breda. Here he was fortunate to have another skilled teacher of mathematics, John

Christiaan Huygens (April 14, 1629 - June 8, 1695)
Born in The Hague in 1629, Christiaan Huygens was a famous Dutchman for his development of advanced pendulum clocks (1659). He also invented an improved type of 2-lense eyepieces (1703), now named after him, and constructed very long air telescopes of up to 250 feet focal length. With these, he made important discoveries such as Jupiter's equatorial bulge, the polar caps of and a dark surface feature, later named Syrtis Major, on Mars. He discovered Saturn's satellite Titan (March 25, 1655) and was the first to clearly see its rings and to explain their appearance over time (1655-59). In 1656 he independently discovered the Orion Nebula M42 and made detailed studies and sketches of this object, including the discovery of three stars of the Trapezium cluster. He visited London in 1665 and was made a member of the Royal Society. On invitation of the French King Louis XIV, he came to Paris in 1666 and became a founding member of the Academie Royale des Sciences (Royal Academy of Sciences) where he worked with G.D. Cassini

Huygens, Christiaan (16291695) Huygens was born in the Hague, Netherlands. He studied mathematics at the University of Leiden. His family was wealthy enough that Huygens was able to perform his mathematical research without additional support or a salary. He traveled around Europe eventually settling in Paris from 1666 to 1680. Huygens was a follower of Descartes He published his important geometrical results in Theoremata de quadratura hyperboles, ellipses et circuli and De circuli magnitudine inventa Later he considered the subject of probability and published Tractatus de ratiociniis in alea e ludo He tackled the problem that a pendulum clock whose bob swings in a circular arc has a frequency of swing dependent on the amplitude of the swing. The wider the swing, the longer it takes the bob to return to center. This does not happen if the bob can be made to swing in a cycloid. In 1673, Huygens, driven by a need to make accurate determinations of the longitude at sea, designed a pendulum clock whose bob swung in a cycloid. He hung the bob from a fine wire constrained by guards that caused it to draw up as it swung.
