S ociety T he E dinburgh G eologist - I ssue no 30 - A utumn 1997 James Hutton, Charles Lyell and the Edinburgh Geological Society by Norman E Butcher As is well known, the Society was founded in 1834 and is in fact the fourth oldest geological society in the British isles. Its origins can be precisely dated to a meeting on Thursday 4 December in that year in Robertson's Tavern in Milne's Close off the: Lawnmarket of eleven members of a class in mineralogy. These even Edinburgh citizens whose names are all recorded, resolved to start a society for'discussion an d Mutual Instruction, to meet in the Mr Rose's house, 2 Drummond Street, every Monday evening at half past eight'. Alexander Rose (1781-1860), a wood turner and mineral dealer, conducted classes in mineralogy in Edinburgh under the auspices of Queen's College, a teaching association existing in the city at that time. Later, as the Society developed, it came to occupy rooms first at 5 St Andrew Square and then in the Synod Hall in Castle Terrace (Butcher, 1991) before the present arrangements came into being in the 1960s. In contrast to the prominence enjoyed by Charles Lyell, in both his life and death, James Hutton fell into some obscurity on his death in Edinburgh in 1797. Of course, John Playfair (1748-1819) promoted Hutton's life and work after Hutton's death, but in a sense he did Hutton a disservice in that later authors, including Lyell, relied on Playfair's account of Hutton and did not read the original texts for themselves. Dennis Dean (1992, p. 229) has made the interesting observation that 'the Edinburgh Geological Society .... was so obviously Huttonian that it effectively superseded the almost moribund Wernerian Society.' However, the Wernerian Natural History Society, founded in Edinburgh by Robert Jameson (1774-1854) in 1808, catered for a different membership to that of the Edinburgh Geological Society in its early years.

The second part was in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Below you will find information about the books that were on display in the department. Most of these books were chosen because they bear on undergraduate mathematics, but there are a few old treasures that have been included for their own sake. Some of these books were chosen because these copies have interesting characteristics, some of which are noted in annotations. When handling these books please use extreme care. Wallis, John

James Hutton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
James Hutton 3 June 26 March ) was a Scottish geologist , noted for formulating uniformitarianism and the Plutonist school of thought. He is considered by many to be the father of modern geology Trained as both a lawyer and medical doctor, Hutton found himself attracted to the nascent science of geology. While working as a "gentleman farmer" in Berwickshire during his thirties and forties, he hit on a variety of ideas to explain the rock formations he saw around him. Moving to Edinburgh , then in the throes of the Scottish Enlightenment , he fell in with several first-class minds in the sciences including John Playfair and Joseph Black. His new theories placed him into opposition with the then-popular Neptunist theories of Abraham Gottlob Werner , that all rocks had precipitated out of a single enormous flood. He noted, for example, that many layers of sedimentary rocks butted up against other layers at unusual angles, which suggested that one had been laid down, then tilted, then another layer deposited. He proposed that the interior of the Earth was hot, and that this heat was the engine which drove the creation of new rock: land was eroded by air and water and deposited as layers in the sea; heat then consolidated the sediment into stone, and uplifted it into new lands. This theory was dubbed "Plutonist" in contrast to the flood-oriented theory.

Sweeney: NOTE: Ref: File "xx" - indicates records in my files under the number indicated by "xx". Ref: File HUT-1: Below we refer to Sarah as Mary - there is much confusion regarding her name. In all birth listings we have found, while she was married to Charles Hutton, it is listed as Sarah. In the Birth record of her daughter, Mary (see below) she used the name Mary. Her name was, maybe, Sarah Mary Sweeney - but may have been Mary Sarah or Ref: File BIR-28: Mary was born as Mary Sweeney; She married Charles Hutton; Charles died July 18th 1881; Mary had a daughter by Patrick McLaren on Nov. 15th 1882; Mary and Patrick McLaren were not married; Their daughter was listed in the register of Births, in the Parish of Dalziel, county of Lanark as Mary McLaren. Confusion resulting from this was cleared up by the following e-mail recieved from Scotland. The birth extract ordered was for Mary Hutton, and as explained she was indexed under both Hutton and McLaren. The childs surname, evidently, was chosen to be Hutton as this is the name she used when marrying Charles Cowie. (This according to Isabel Jeanette Hutton Cowie)

GLOSSARY ... ABOUT CHAPTER 10: Introduction to the Lithosphere (c). Concept of Uniformitarianism Uniformitarianism is one of the most important unifying concepts in the geosciences. This concept developed in the late 1700s, suggests that catastrophic processes were not responsible for the landforms that existed on the Earth's surface. This idea was diametrically opposed to the ideas of that time period which were based on a biblical interpretation of the history of the Earth. Instead, the theory of uniformitarianism suggested that the landscape developed over long periods of time through a variety of slow geologic and geomorphic processes. The term uniformitarianism was first used in 1832 by William Whewell , a University of Cambridge scholar, to present an alternative explanation for the origin of the Earth. The prevailing view at that time was that the Earth was created through supernatural means and had been affected by a series of catastrophic events such as the biblical Flood. This theory is called
