Charles Hutton Riddle tells us of Hutton's education in [7]:- He was taught to read by an old woman who conducted a little school in the neighbourhood, and to write by a schoolmaster named Robson, near Benwell, a village near Newcastle; and he attended afterwards a school at Jesmond, kept by the Rev. Mr Ivison, a clergyman of the English Church; and on Mr Ivison's removal to a curacy in the county of Durham, Mr Hutton succeeded him in his school at Jesmond. In fact Hutton did work for a short time at Old Long Benton colliery between the time Mr Ivison left the school and when Hutton succeeded him. He was so successful in this school in Jesmond that he soon moved to larger premises in the neighbourhood. At this stage Hutton began studying mathematics at evening classes at Mr James' school in Newcastle. In 1760 Hutton opened the Mathematical School in Newcastle but he also taught at the main secondary school in the city. He was fortunate to have a number of private pupils from the local land owning families who helped further his career. Riddle tells us that [7]:- ... his manners, as well as his talents, rendered him acceptable as a private teacher in the families of the higher classes.

Charles Hutton (14 August 1737 – 27 January 1823) Hutton was born in Newcastle, the youngest son of an overviewer (supervisor) of a coal mine. When he was seven, Hutton was involved in a street-brawl and severely dislocated his left elbow. He hid this injury from his parents and by the time they learned of it, it was too late to treat it properly, so the injury became permanent. Since Hutton was unable to join his older brothers in the mine, he was sent to school to learn to read. After several years the teacher left and Hutton replaced him, thus beginning a habit of teaching by day and learning by night. In 1760, Hutton opened his own school in Newcastle. This became a success and he became known as an excellent teacher. His patron, Shafto, suggested that he should move to London and apply for a vacancy at the Royal Military Academy in Woolich. The position was to be filled by competitive examination. Bishop Horsley, the editor of Newton’s works, and Nevel Maskelyn, the Astronomer Royal, examined the eleven candidates. Half were judged satisfactory for the post, but Hutton stood out, so he obtained this professorship in 1773. He remained at Woolich for 34 years.

The following year he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1767 he published A Treatise on Mensuration which he states is adapted particularly to the Uses of Schools, Mathematicians and Mechanics. Many later writers borrowed material from this book. In 1775 Hutton published five volumes of extracts from the Ladies' Diary dealing with entertaining mathematical and poetical parts . He received the Copley Medal of the Royal Society for The Force of Fired Gunpowder and the velocity of Cannon Balls (1778). He also computed the mean density of the Earth based on Maskelyne 's data from Schiehallion in An Account of the Calculations made from the Survey and Measures taken at Schiehallion in order to ascertain the mean density of the Earth In 1781 Hutton published Mathematical Tables for the Board of Longitude.

The Masquerading Monarch
By Professor Ronald Hutton An intelligent and charming monarch or irresponsible risk-taker? Ronald Hutton unmasks the real Charles II. Page 1 of 7 1. Introduction 2. A crazy idea 3. The Restoration 4. Crisis ... Print entire article Introduction Biographies of King Charles II show a curious discrepancy. Popular books, plays and films overwhelmingly portray a man of extraordinary charm, wit, courtesy and affability, loyal to old friends, perceptive and intelligent, and marvellously cultured; the monarch who introduced the British to champagne and yachting. This picture is true. Academic historians, by contrast, almost all see Charles as a king of no vision and no fixed ideals, irresponsible, unbusinesslike and with a disastrous taste for taking risks, who turned his three nations into states riven by chronic instability and distrust. This is also an accurate assessment. The difference is largely a matter of preoccupation. The former image is largely that of the king in his leisure pursuits, while the latter is that of him as a ruler. What must be especially significant is that virtually all those contemporaries who have left opinions paid tribute to Charles's social charms, and none ranked him as a great monarch.

CHARLES HUTTON
HUTTON, CHARLES See John Bruce, Charles Hutton (Newcastle, 1823). Ulrich von Hutten is one of those men of genius at whom propriety is shocked, and whom the mean-spirited avoid. Yet through his short and buffeted life he was befriended, with wonderful charity and patience, by the chief leaders of the Humanist movement. For, in spite of his irritable vanity, his immoral life and habits, his odious diseases, his painful restlessness, Hutten had much in him that strong men could love. He passionately loved the truth, and was ever open to all good influences. He was a patriot, whose soul soared to ideal schemes and a grand utopian restoration of his country. In spite of all, his was a frank and noble nature; his faults chiefly the faults of genius ill-controlled, and of a life cast in the eventful changes of an age of novelty. A swarm of writings issued from his pen; at first the smooth elegance of his Latin prose and verse seemed strangely to miss his real character; he was the Cicero and Ovid of Germany before he became its Lucian. For a complete catalogue of the writings of Hutten, see E. Bocking~ Index Bzhliograpbicus lluttenianus (1858). Bocking is also the edito of the complete edition of Huttens works (7 vol~., 1859-1862). http://www.blackmask.com/jrusk/wcollins/letters/letters.htm
LETTERS OF CHARLES DICKENS TO WILKIE COLLINS
Edited by Laurence Hutton WILLIAM WILKIE COLLINS was a man of five or six and twenty when he first met Charles Dickens, in 1851. He had spent two years in study in Italy; four years as an articled clerk to a city firm in the tea trade; he had been a student of law in Lincoln's Inn; he had written a biography of his father, William Collins, R. A., who was a painter of some repute; he had published his first novel, Antonina, and he had determined to devote himself thenceforth to a career of literature. Charles Dickens at this period was nearly forty years of age. He had given to the world the immortal Pickwick, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, Barnaby Rudge, The American Notes, Martin Chuzzlewit, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, Dombey and Son, The Haunted Man, and David Copperfield; and he had but recently commenced the publication of the weekly journal called Household Words. He was the intimate of Thackeray, from whom he was then not yet estranged, of Carlyle, Leigh Hunt, Macaulay, Sydney Smith, Wilkie, Jerrold, Landor, Rogers, Longfellow, Washington Irving, Jeffrey, Turner, "Rugby" Arnold, Leech, Lemon, and their peers; and he was the recognized head of his guild in England. The friendship and recognition of such a man were of inestimable value to the younger writer; and the intimacy then begun, and cemented by the marriage of the daughter of Dickens to the brother of Collins ten years later, continued unbroken until Dickens died in 1870.

Much of the first volume is devoted to bridges and includes a history of iron bridges. Hutton had been involved in the parliamentary debate concerning Telford's radical scheme for an iron bridge with a single span of 600 feet across the Thames and his contribution to that debate is also included.
