by Kate Huntington (Zebra Regency, $4.99, G) ISBN 0-821-76420-9 Kate Huntington follows up her stunning debut from last spring, The Captain's Courtship , with an equally delightful spinoff. The Lieutenant's Lady offers a solid romance and a heroine with some spice and backbone. A good read is virtually guaranteed. Lydia Whittaker has spent the last few years helping keep her family fed and clothed in their Yorkshire home. The second eldest of five girls, Lydia is the one with the head for practical matters, a useful talent since the death of her gambling, drinking father. Eldest sister Vanessa has just made a brilliant marriage to Alexander Logan, Lord Blakely and heir to an earldom. Hard on the heels of this triumph comes word that the Whittaker ladies are about to be evicted from their home by Uncle Henry, rightful owner. Now that Vanessa has married Alexander, let him take care of the Whittakers. Uncle Henry wants the house for his own son, Edward. Lydia hides her distress beneath a façade of determined cheerfulness, and packs her mother and sisters off to Brighton with Alex and Vanessa while she stays behind to close up the house and await Uncle Henry. When he arrives, Edward in tow, Henry doesn't recognize Lydia and mistakes her for a servant:

The key to postponing the disease may lie with genes that help modify the precise timing of the disease. The age of onset can vary from one person to the next by as much as 30 years. Man from Lake Maracaibo and Nancy Wexler.

Now the researchers have begun to search for the modifier genes as the first step in developing ways to delay the disease. The U.S.-Venezuela project includes some 18,000 people who are descendents or relatives of a woman who lived in a stilt village on Lake Maracaibo in the early 1800s. She had the disease, and her chromosome carrying the mutation has been passed through ten generations. Over the last 20 years, the U.S.-Venezuela project has gathered detailed information, including DNA and health histories, for many of these people. The data show that two people born at the same time who have the exact same mutation may develop the disease more than 30 years apart. By the end of World War I, the oil industry had become a large and fantastically profitable business which in part had replaced in influence other industrial interests dominating American Politics.

A key player in this game was Edward L. Doheny, a man whose vast holdings in both the United States and Mexico caused his only son to play significant and tragic role in its history.

Edward Laurence Doheny, Jr. was born in Los Angeles on November 1893 and he graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1912. He went to Stanford University for one semester and transferred to the University of Southern California in January 1913. He married his wife and the mother of his five children in June 1913. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in business in 1916. He then joined his father's many companies. He was at an executive capacity with the ultimate purpose being to succeed to the presidency upon his father's retirement.

Doheny, Sr. had first worked as a government surveyor in Kansas and New Mexico. He prospected for gold, leaving a long time friend and business partner, Albert Bacon Fall.

Edward Said's response to Huntington's essay is that it is a typical
orientalist piece. It espouses cultural essentialism and proceeds to give
advice to Western governments on how to dominate, manage and police the
"other". Huntington defies reality in his characterization of civilizations
as impermeable monolithic entities and in further emphasizing their
potential to clash rather than conduct beneficial exchanges. Were the text
books of medicine in medieval Europe not written by Muslims (al-Razi and
Avicenna)?. That is what Edward Said might think.
Huntington's tabloid scholarship naturally irritated committed
liberals and secularists like Ajami. On the other hand, it was met by nods of agreement from the paranoid on both sides of the alleged "civilizationl fault lines". In Ameica, "The National Review" has been running articles of

How would Edward Said respond to Huntington’s, "Clash of Civilizations"?
"Where to start?" would probably be Said’s first response. Before even
approaching to answer this question, though, one must recognize the drastic
differences between Edward Said and S. P. Huntington visible through their
writings. Said, in his, "Culture and Imperialism", portrays himself to be
optimistic, involved in, and passionate about what he writes. On the other
hand, Huntington appears pessimistic, withdrawn, and passive in his essay, "The Clash of Civilizations". Now knowing the inherent contrast of approach in writing style of Said and Huntington, a response shall be made on behalf of Edward Said in regard to Huntington’s, "The Clash of
