PRESTON, Edward Verrance, Civil War Veteran, Insurance Official.
Major Edward Verrance Preston, general manager of agencies of The Travelers Insurance Company of Hartford, is one of the best known insurance men in Connecticut, his native State. He was born June 1, 1837, in Willington, son of Joshua and Caroline (Eldredge) Preston. Major Preston was born under the handicap of having to maintain the prestige of a distinguished ancestry, which has been traced back through a number of families to early Colonial days. Major Preston has made good, not only as a volunteer when the unity of the nation was threatened, but in the more peaceful paths of business, and as a worker in the cause of religion, in which his family through many generations has been prominent.
Children of Judge John: Rev. John; Richard. his heir, and a daughter. The American families are undoubtedly descended from some branch of this family. The Connecticut family has been traced to George Preston, of Valley Field, who was created a baron of Nova Scotia in 1537, through his son William, who died April 23, 1585: his son John; his son William, the Connecticut immigrant, came in 1635, died in 1639, leaving land in Yorkshire. whence he had come to this country.
Major Preston is a strong and active Republican, and has served in the Common Council and as a member of the board of aldermen.

List of Known Peirce Correspondents
This list includes names of persons Peirce sent letters to and/or received letters from, either probably or certainly, and names of people who wrote letters concerning Peirce, a few of which Peirce had copies of, that have been retrieved in different archives. The list also includes names of institutions. We strongly wish that readers interested in this list would look for a number of the names in their local archives in the hope of finding new Peirce-related letters. We expect that thousands of letters by Peirce still survive in unsearched archives both in the U.S. and abroad. Please join the effort in their recovery!

The Clash of Ignorance
by Edward W. Said
Samuel Huntington's article "The Clash of Civilizations?" appeared in the Summer 1993 issue of Foreign Affairs, where it immediately attracted a surprising amount of attention and reaction. Because the article was intended to supply Americans with an original thesis about "a new phase" in world politics after the end of the cold war, Huntington's terms of argument seemed compellingly large, bold, even visionary. He very clearly had his eye on rivals in the policy-making ranks, theorists such as Francis Fukuyama and his "end of history" ideas, as well as the legions who had celebrated the onset of globalism, tribalism and the dissipation of the state. But they, he allowed, had understood only some aspects of this new period. He was about to announce the "crucial, indeed a central, aspect" of what "global politics is likely to be in the coming years." Unhesitatingly he pressed on: "It is my hypothesis that the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic. The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will dominate global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future."

He was also influential in organizing the Rome free school system and became a member of the first Board of Education, a position he filled with singular ability and universal satisfaction. He was a faithful friend of and identified with the Young Men’s Christian Association from its inception, being its first president and a member of its board of directors until his death. Throughout his life, he was a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church. September 4, 1844, Mr. Huntington was married to Miss Antoinette Randall, daughter of William Randall of Cortland, N. Y., who survives him, as do also a son and four daughters. Page 112 (Contributed by Linda)

  • My own eyes are no more than scouts on a preliminary search, for the camera's eye may entirely change my idea. - Edward Weston The camera makes everyone a tourist in other people's reality. - Susan Sontag One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you'd be stricken blind. - Dorothea Lange I almost never set out to photograph a landscape, nor do I think of my camera as a means of recording a mountain or an animal unless I absolutely need a 'record shot'. My first thought is always of light. - Galen Rowell The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking. - Brooks Anderson Sometimes you can tell a large story with a tiny subject. - Eliot Porter You've got to push yourself harder. You've got to start looking for pictures nobody else could take. You've got to take the tools you have and probe deeper. - William Albert Allard A great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed.

Description:
J. Edward Roush Lake, a flood-control reservoir on the Wabash River, is surrounded by patches of woodlands, early successional fields, weedy fields, several small ponds, and agricultural areas. The Huntington Reservoir property extends for some distance east of the reservoir along the Wabash River. Although not a consistently good birding area, Huntington Reservoir has produced notable bird records, mostly in migration. Much of the area can be birded by car with only short walks.
The best vantages for loons, grebes, waterfowl, and gulls are: Little Turtle State Recreation Area (at the beach and the point just beyond the covered picnic pavilion at the east end of the recreation area), Kilsoquah Boat Launch, East Boat Launch, and Markle Pond. Wading birds are best found at Markle Pond and, in the fall when the Wabash River is low, the South Wabash River Loop.
Shorebirds may be found on the beach at Little Turtle SRA (especially early in the morning before people arrive), at Markle Pond, and, in the fall when the Wabash River is low, along the sandbars visible from the South Wabash River Loop. It should be noted that the latter two locations do not consistently have low enough water in late summer and fall to attract shorebirds.
