Contents Edward H. Davis Guide to the Microfilm Text Edward H. Davis Edward H. Davis (1862-1951) was an indefatigable collector and traveller. Born in Brooklyn to a sea-faring family, Davis was educated in the New York public schools and took further training as an artist at the Brooklyn Art Guild. Ill health dictated that he move to a more agreeable climate, so at the young age of twenty two he set off for California, sailing there through the Panama canal. He arrived in the booming town of San Diego in January 1885. In need of a job, he put his draftsman’s talents to use, map-making for the city, and drawing house plans. But it was a fortunate 1887 real estate venture with his father that provided the capital necessary to establish a home on what became 600 acres at Mesa Grande in the mountainous back country of San Diego County. He built a lean-to addition to the shanty that was on the property, and settled in with his wife, Anna May, and their young son, Harvey. Soon various members of both their families joined them, pushing the cabin’s capacity to the limit. Space constraints were further challenged as Davis almost immediately began to acquire objects from his Kumeyaay (Diegueño) Indian neighbors.

H untington Castle, 2½ miles south west of Kington, seems to have been founded as the direct successor of Kington Castle , although it must be realized that the earlier history of the vill or manor is somewhat obscure. The first castle of Huntington is to be identified with Turret Castle, a motte and bailey 1 mile south and east of the current fortress. As Huntington vill was in the hands of the Crown until the 1090's it would appear likely that the first castle was constructed under the aegis of William fitz Osbern or his son, Earl Roger of Hereford. Between 1066 and 1075 the two earls held the king's lands in Herefordshire. William fitz Osbern, after invading Brycheiniog in the summer of 1070 and defeating the regal rulers of South Wales, established several castles up and down his borders between Wigmore in the north and Chepstow in the south. Turret Castle may well have been one of these fortresses. William, who had switched his theatre of operations to the Low Countries of Flanders in the winter of 1070, taking only 10 of his knightly retainers with him, was brought to battle at Cassel and there, according to Ordericus Vitalis, the Norman Chronicler, he died how he had lived, by the sword.

The town is named for three members of the Hunt family among the grantees: Josiah, Charles and Marmaduke. The "New" was dropped by Legislative action in 1795. The first town's Post Office was established in 1827 as Hunting d on, and it took fifteen years of protests from townspeople to get the spelling corrected.

John Dolan HISPANIC PANIC Samuel P. Huntington and the return of the Know-Nothings. [EXCERPT] SAMUEL P. HUNTINGTON is a bigot, convinced that immigrant hordes are poisoning our Anglo-Protestant America. This in itself is not surprising; there have always been plenty of his kind on the American scene. Nor is it surprising that this bigot is a professor at Harvard. Nativism, in its 19th-century surge, was very much the darling cause of the New England elites. What is surprising is that now, a century and a half after the Know-Nothings vanished in disgrace, Huntington feels free to promote his nativist hatred in print, and can be celebrated for doing so. Post-9/11 America, as John le Carre has said, has lost its mind. Huntington's screeching is a worthy contribution to the bedlam. HUNTINGTON Huntington is a town in northwestern Emery County near the mouth of a long canyon that cuts diagonally into the Wasatch Plateau. Huntington Creek was probably named for William, Oliver, and Dimick Huntington, brothers who led exploring parties into the region during the 1850s. The first settlers of European extraction in the area were four stockmen, Leander Lemmon, James McHadden, Bill Gentry, and Alfred Starr, who brought their herds to Huntington Creek in 1875. Of this group, only Lemmon became a permanent resident. In the fall of 1877, in response to the same "call" from the LDS Church that brought settlers to the other creeks in Castle Valley, a small group from Fairview, Sanpete County, under the leadership of Elias Cox, established a dugout colony on the banks of Huntington Creek and began digging irrigation canals. The colony grew from 126 in 1880 to 738 in 1890 and 1,293 in 1910. A majority of the early settlers came from Sanpete Valley, which by the late 1870s had outgrown its irrigable land, and many belonged to three or four interrelated kinship groups, making for an abundance of cousins in the community. In 1880 a mile-square townsite was surveyed on the Prickly Pear Flat, a bench south and west of the creek. The first structure erected on the new townsite was a 40-foot by 60-foot log meetinghouse, which was completed in time for an all-night New Year's Eve party on 31 December 1880. Most of the townsite was without water until the completion of the Huntington Canal in 1882. Settlers drew town lots and built homes in town as they proved up on their homesteads. The first homes, some of which were still occupied until recent years, were typically of sawed log or plank construction or of adobe sheathed with lumber. The erection of a new LDS meetinghouse in 1896 inaugurated a twenty-year building boom that saw the completion of many brick homes, schools, and commercial buildings.
