Edward Huntington 's father was Chester Huntington while his mother was Katherine Hazard Smith. Huntington attended Harvard College, and he was awarded his A.B. in 1895, followed by his A.M. two years later. He had already been appointed as an instructor at Harvard after completing his first degree and he held this post while studying for his Master's degree. After being awarded the Master's degree, Huntington was appointed to Williams College. For two years Huntington worked as a mathematics instructor at Williams College at Williamstown, Massachusetts. The College was a long established one, founded in 1793. In 1899 Huntington left the United States to study for his doctorate in Europe. This was awarded by the University of Strasbourg in 1901. Most American mathematicians of this period who went to Europe to complete their studies chose Germany and, indeed, the city of Strasbourg was German at this time (and in fact called Strassburg). It had been annexed by Germany during the Franco-German War of 1870-71 and would not became French again until after World War I. Huntington's doctorate was awarded for a thesis on algebra. Returning to the United States, Huntington again was appointed as an instructor in Harvard in 1901. He was promoted to an assistant professor in 1905, then in 1909 he married Suzie Edwards Van Volkenburgh - they had no children. Huntington was promoted to associate professor in 1915 and to professor of mechanics at Harvard in 1919. He retired from this chair, and his other duties, in 1941.

Edward Huntington was born on June 23, 1817 in Rome. He attended school at the Oliver C. Grosvenor's school, but had to give up the hope of a college education due to ill health. He set his sights toward civil engineering for the sake of outdoor exercise. He spent some time in Cuba with Benjamin H. Wright, working on railroad surveys. After returning to Rome, he became one of the engineers to work on the Schenectady and Utica railroad and he was made one of the chief corps engineers in 1839. He resigned from this position in 1841 when his father, George Huntington, died. He returned to Rome and took over the land from his fathers estate. He became a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1846 and he served as president of the village of Rome.

One of his great interests was to make it so anyone could receive an education. He was a prominant figure in the establishment of Rome Academy, for which he was a trustee. He served on the first Board of Education for the first year, with much satisfaction. He became the first president of the Young Men's Christian Association and remained on the board of directors until his death. He was also a prominent member of the Presbyterian church and a devout Christian. "He discharged every duty with an impartiality and fearlessness born of love of right and justice. He was a man of strict integrity, unswerving fidelity, and of great uprightness of character. A devout Christian, a life-long friends of popular education, a staunch supporter of the moral and public welfare, he was ever a generous promoter of all projects which promised advancement to the community. He was widely respected and esteemed, and retained the confidence of with whom he came into contact with."

Photograph by Edward Weston This superb collection today remains an important legacy created by a master photographer at the height of his career. It is also one of the gems of The Huntington's extensive collections on the history of the American West. Although several small exhibitions of works from the Guggenheim collection have been mounted at The Huntington since the gift arrived in the 1940s, no large exhibit has ever been organized. As such, The Huntington's Weston collection has remained a hidden jewel, little known even to historians of photography. The Guggenheim prints are at the heart of The Huntington's Weston collection. Liberated financially for the first time in his life, Weston sought, as he stated in his Guggenheim application, "to continue an epic series of photographs of the West, begun about 1929; [including] a range from satires on advertising to ranch life, from beach kelp to mountains." The purchase of a car allowed him to travel through California, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and north to Oregon and Washington. Classic images of Lake Tenaya, the Mojave Desert, Yosemite, and Death Valley, among others, are found throughout the collection.

Its architectural simplicity, natural setting, and romantic history have inspired art abundance of writers, artists, poets, and photographers. Countless articles in newspapers, magazines, travel journals, and guide books have discussed its architecture, its garden, its restoration, the engineering principles of the mill, and its colorful residents. Writers of a more romantic bent have composed poems and tales of lost treasure and ghosts, Indian raids, and Romeo and Juliet-style romances.
