She got Master of Science and Bachelor of Science at the National University of Singapore in 2003 and 2001 respectively. Her research focuses on question answering, information extraction, and information retrieval. She is working on a high performance question answering system called QUALIFIER (QUestion Answering by LexIcal FabrIc and External Resource), which is the 2nd best performing system evaluated in both TREC-11 and TREC-12 QA Main Task Evaluation. She is the principal designer for the overall architecture of QUALIFIER, and various modules of it like question classification, question parsing, query formulation, answer selection, etc. She has extended the work in TREC to Event-based Question Answering, which considers the questions as “enquiries to entities or aspects of events” and exploiting the structural knowledge for effective QA. QUALIFIER integrates the external knowledge extracted from the Web and WordNet and further uncovers the event structure within the knowledge to perform the event-based QA.

Dan-Hui Yang On the Molecular Mechanism of LHCII Proteolysis During Photoacclimation of Photosystem II Higher plants and green algae have a remarkable ability to respond to fluctuations in the light intensity. Plants adapted to low or high light regimes possess larger or smaller light-harvesting antennae respectively. Although this long-term photoacclimation of the PSII antennae is an important factor for the photoprotection of photosynthetic apparatus and it has been extensively described at the physiological level, the underlying molecular mechanisms have remained largely unknown. Furthermore, the proteolytic system involved has been characterized in vitro and found not to correspond to any previously characterized thylakoid proteases. Purification of the novel proteolytic system from acclimating spinach leaves reveal that it is represented by a 44 kDa protease, probably a chloroplast homologue of the Lon protease in E. coli., which may consist of an ATPase/SSD domain and a protease domain. The fragmentation pattern during LHCII degradation in vitro gives support on requirement of multiple proteolytic cleavages for the complete digestion of LHCII. Finally, the mechanism of redox controlled turnover of LHCII during photoacclimation was studied using Lemna perpusilla wild type and a cytochrome b6f-deficient mutant as a model system. The results strongly suggest that plastoquinone, as an important redox regulator in signal transduction, affects both synthesis and degradation of LHCII during photoacclimation of PSII.

The Kinematics of Giant H II Regions By Hui Yang Under the supervision of Dr. Evan D. Skillman ABSTRACT In order to search for Supernova Remnants (SNRs) and understand the origin of the turbulent gas in Giant H II Regions (GHR), we have taken radio, optical and X-ray observations of several GHRs. The kinematics of the GHRs are studies using TAURUS imaging Fabry-Perot interferometer and echelle spectroscopy in H-alpha lambda(6563), [O III] lambda(5007) and [S II] lambda(6717), lambda(6731) emission lines. Radio continuum observations of the GHRs are taken to detect the synchrotron radiation from SNRs. Since X-ray emission traces the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the diffuse X-ray emission detected in the GHRs can be the indicator of the existence in SNRs. Different mechanisms which may cause the turbulence in the GHRs are studies. The important role of SNR in influencing the kinetics of the gas is also investigated in this thesis.
