Jacob (Jacques) Bernoulli
Born: 27 Dec 1654 in Basel Switzerland
Died: 16 Aug 1705 in Basel Switzerland
Jacob Bernoulli 's father, Nicolaus Bernoulli (1623-1708) inherited the spice business in Basel that had been set up by his own father, first in Amsterdam and then in Basel . The family, of Belgium origin, were refugees fleeing from persecution by the Spanish rulers of the Netherlands . Philip, the King of Spain, had sent the Duke of Alba to the Netherlands in 1567 with a large army to punish those opposed to Spanish rule, to enforce adherence to Roman Catholicism, and to re-establish Philip's authority. Alba set up the Council of Troubles which was a court that condemned over 12000 people but most, like the Bernoulli family who were of the Protestant faith, fled the country. Nicolaus Bernoulli was an important citizen of Basel , being a member of the town council and a magistrate. Jacob Bernoulli's mother also came from an important Basel family of bankers and local councillors. Jacob Bernoulli was the brother of Johann Bernoulli and the uncle of Daniel Bernoulli . He was compelled to study philosophy and theology by his parents, which he greatly resented, and he graduated from the

Hudson at Murtoa Past Links Revealed Names Historically, names have served as a fingerprint of life, which can help us trace our ancestors back to a place, a time or an occupation, a study of which is called Onomastics. The Chinese had hereditary surnames 2000 years ago, but the practice was not introduced into Europe until around 1100 A.D. As small villages grew it became confusing if there were, for example, 4 Williams. So perhaps Robert's son became William Robertson, the carpenter became William Carpenter, the William who lived near the creek became William Brook, and the short one became William Little. The Normans were amongst the first Europeans to adopt surnames. In fact, when William the Conqueror invaded England, he ordered those new subjects with only one name, to adopt a surname as well. My research indicates that the surname Hudson, originated in the north of England. From a corruption of the second part of the name Richard, the nick name 'Hudde' was first recorded in 1273. Soon after, there appeared the name Huddeson, no doubt the son of Mr. Hudde. Over time, compounded by illiteracy and carelessness, the spelling varied. In 1379 there was a Johannes Hudson living in the north of England. Other derivatives of Hudde include, Hudd, Huddeson, Huddson, Hudeson, Hudsone, Huddy, Hutson and other variations. Middle names weren't used until the 15th century, when a second Christian name was used as a status symbol by German nobility. In the United States, after the American Revolution it became the fashion to use the mother's maiden name as a middle name. Today the middle name is also likely to have been selected from a favourite ancestor.

65. Dr. Matrix' Discussion Of Mathematics
and Isaac Barrow, as well as on work of such Continental mathematicians as Descartes,Francesco Bonaventura Cavalieri, johann van Waveren hudde, and Gilles
http://scientium.com/drmatrix/sciences/mathref.htm
Mathematics From an encyclopaedia essay by J. Lennart Berggren,
Hyperlinked by Dr. Matrix Mathematics , the study of relationships among quantities, magnitudes, and properties and of logical operations by which unknown quantities, magnitudes, and properties may be deduced. In the past, mathematics was regarded as the science of quantity, whether of magnitudes, as in geometry , or of numbers, as in arithmetic , or of the generalization of these two fields, as in algebra . Toward the middle of the 19th century, however, mathematics came to be regarded increasingly as the science of relations, or as the science that draws necessary conclusions. This latter view encompasses mathematical or symbolic logic, the science of using symbols to provide an exact theory of logical deduction and inference based on definitions, axioms, postulates, and rules for combining and transforming primitive elements into more complex relations and theorems. This brief survey of the history of mathematics traces the evolution of mathematical ideas and concepts, beginning in prehistory. Indeed, mathematics is nearly as old as humanity itself; evidence of a sense of geometry and interest in geometric pattern has been found in the designs of prehistoric pottery and textiles and in cave paintings. Primitive counting systems were almost certainly based on using the fingers of one or both hands, as evidenced by the predominance of the numbers 5 and 10 as the bases for most number systems today. Ancient Mathematics The earliest records of advanced, organized mathematics date back to the ancient

71. Pre-calculus Algebra
Descartes method and hudde s Rule were important in influencing Newton. the developmentof the calculus was continued by Jacob Bernoulli and johann Bernoulli.
http://lrc.alasu.edu/mathematics/mat265/content.htm
Calculus - The main ideas which underpin the calculus developed over a very long period of time indeed. The first steps were taken by Greek mathematicians. To the Greeks numbers were ratios of integers so the number line had "holes" in it. They got round this difficulty by using lengths, areas and volumes in addition to numbers for, to the Greeks, not all lengths were numbers. Zeno of Elea, about 450 BC, gave a number of problems which were based on the infinite. For example he argued that motion is impossible:- If a body moves from A to B then before it reaches B it passes through the mid-point, say B of AB . Now to move to B it must first reach the mid-point B of AB . Continue this argument to see that A must move through an infinite number of distances and so cannot move. Leucippus,Democritus and Antiphon all made contributions to the Greek method of exhaustion which was put on a scientific basis by Eudoxus about 370 BC. The method of exhaustion is so called because
one thinks of the areas measured expanding so that they account for more and more of the required area. Archimedes, around 225 BC, made one of the most significant of the Greek contributions. His first important advance was to show that the area of a segment of a parabola is 4/3 the area of a triangle with the same base and vertex and 2/3 of the area of the circumscribed parallelogram. Archimedes constructed an infinite sequence of triangles starting with one of area
