In 1898, His family moved to Chicago, where he attended high school. Young Edwin Hubble had been fascinated by science and mysterious new worlds from an early age, having spent his childhood reading the works of Jules Verne (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, From the Earth to the Moon), and Henry Rider Haggard (King Solomon's Mines), Edwin Hubble was a fine student and an even better athlete, having broken the Illinois State high jump record. When he attended University, Hubble continued to excel in sports such as basketball and boxing, but he also found time to study and earn an undergraduate degree in mathematics and astronomy. Edwin Hubble went to Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship, where he did not continue his studies in astronomy, but instead studied law. At this point in his life, he had not yet made up his mind about pursuing a scientific career. In 1913, Hubble returned from England and was admitted to the bar, setting up a small practice in Louisville Kentucky; but it didn't take long for Hubble to realize he wasn't happy as a lawyer, and that his real passion was astronomy, so he studied at the Yerkes Observatory, and in 1917, received a doctorate in astronomy from the University of Chicago.

Comenzó su carrera profesional estudiando jurisprudencia en Chicago y Oxford, pero también se distinguió como atleta y boxeador. Uno de sus primeros descubrimientos se remonta a 1919, cuando demostró que en el interior de nuestra Galaxia existen nubes de hidrógeno que se hacen luminosas por la existencia de estrellas en su interior. En 1923 descubrió las estrellas individuales que constituyen la nebulosa de la región externa de la galaxia de Andrómeda, y, gracias a la relación luminosidad-distancia que caracteriza a estas estrellas, pudo demostrar que Andrómeda no está en el interior de nuestra Galaxia, sino fuera, y que es un sistema de estrellas completamente similar al nuestro. Hubble introdujo asimismo un sistema de clasificación de las Galaxias según su estructura. En 1929 Hubble comparó las distancias que había calculado para diferentes galaxias con los desplazamientos hacia el rojo fijados por Slipher para las mismas galaxias. Descubrió que cuanto más lejos estaba la galaxia, más alta era su velocidad de recesión. A esta relación se la conoce como la ley de los desplazamientos hacia el rojo o ley de Hubble; determina que la velocidad de una galaxia es proporcional a su distancia. La relación entre la velocidad de recesión de una galaxia y su distancia es la constante de Hubble. El valor de esta constante se calcula que está entre los 50 y los 100 km/s por megaparsec (1 megaparsec equivale a 1 millón de parsecs), aunque los datos más recientes apuntan a un valor comprendido entre los 60 y 70 km/s por megaparsec.

Edwin Powell Hubble Nacido el 29 de noviembre de 1889, en Marshfield, Missouri, USA, Fallecido el 28 de septiembre de 1953, en Pasadena, California, USA. Edwin Powell Hubble , fue uno de los científicos que más aportó en el pasado ha ampliar nuestra visión del universo. En efecto, en los inicios del siglo XX, la mayoría de los astrónomos pensaban que la Galaxia de Vía Láctea era el universo, con una extensión de tan sólo unos pocos cientos de años luz. En los inicios de la segunda década del pasado siglo, Harlow Shapley demostró que la galaxia tenía una extensión de alrededor de 100.000 años luz, y Henrietta Leavitt pudo establecer que las nubes grande y pequeña de Magallanes (dos galaxias compañeras de la nuestra, visibles desde el hemisferio sur) se encontraban fuera de las fronteras de la Vía Láctea. Pero seguía persistiendo una gran interrogante sobre la naturaleza de unos objetos conocidos como nebulosas que emitían una difusa luz. Entre 1923 y 1924, Hubble utilizó el telescopio más grande que existía entonces en el mundo – el Hooker de 100” de Mount Wilson – para examinar la nebulosa de Andrómeda. Así como Galileo con su débil catalejo, más de tres siglos antes, había logrado convertir la luz difusa de nuestra Vía Láctea en estrella individualmente observables, Hubble descubrió y fotografío con el poderoso astrógrafo de ese telescopio las estrellas que componían un brazo de la nebulosa espiral de Andrómeda. Entre las estrellas del brazo espiral de Andrómeda, Hubble encontró algunas cefeidas, y aplicando la ley de Henrietta Leavitt calculó la distancia de la nebulosa en 800.000 años luz. ¡Nunca hasta entonces el cartabón métrico de la astronomía había penetrado en semejantes profundidades del espacio! Con ello, se confirmaba lo que algunos astrónomos habían sospechado: la mancha lechosa de la lejana nebulosa se había revelado como una galaxia semejante a la nuestra. Sin embargo, la nebulosa de Andrómeda es una de las más próximas galaxias distantes de los límites de nuestra Vía Láctea.
