Horner's rule
When numerically computing values of polynomials, Horner's rule (or Horner's method Horner's Schema ) is one of the first basic computation rules one must learn. Assume you want to evaluate the value of a polynomial: You see that in order to carry out this evaluation for a given and given coefficients , you need to perform multiplications and additions, given that you preserve the powers of between the additions. (Else it will demand something like ( n n )/2 multiplications!) William George Horner observed in (columbi egg) that as additions are easier to perform than multiplications (especially if you want to compute this using a computer ), if you rewrite the polynomial evaluation as follows: then may be evaluated recursively using only multiplications and additions. This may be easily implemented in a computer program where a[] is a vector of the coefficients, with the most significant coefficient first, thusly (pseudo code):

George William Horner
At the Annual Dinner, November 1999, I was handed a letter from Mr. Brian Merton Gould of Norwich. He wanted any information or background on the school career of George Horner in the late 20s/early 30s. After a little search in the school magazines of the period I was able to establish a few details of Horner's School Certificate results and a record of his working first in the Taunton Public Library, where he passed the first of the Library Association's exams 'with Distinction' before moving to London and work at the Fulham Library. There, the trail seems to grow cold although it is possible that there is some record of his further career in the annals of the old London Branch (if they exist). I also found that Horner had been 'assistant editor' to Mr. Mitford for his last few terms at Huish's. All this was duly passed to Mr Gould, with the comment '...Mitford, whom I remember as a fiery little Welshman and others remember as being handy with his fists'. (see Clem Nettell's memoir of the 1940's Mr Gould is quite excited by this piece of somewhat colourful background - 'short and vivid' he describes it - and has requested permission to include it in a second publication about his late friend. All being well, there will be more on this later on.

William and Noah emigrated to Australia in 1848 from Yardley Gobion, Northamptonshire, England. Sheffield Chartists along with others to the very brink. The immediate objective, however, was to release the well-known Chartist lecturer Henry Vincent and others who had recently been arrested by the authorities - though as it happened, Vincent himself was not even being held in Newport at the time. The rising was led by John Frost Zepheniah Williams the central column, and William Jones the eastern column. When they reached their planned assembly point, however, there was no sign of Jones and his column, so some six and a-half hours later than planned, the forces under Frost and Williams entered Newport, not under cover of night, as had been planned, but in broad daylight, exhausted and wet from the heavy rain. The main force of the Chartist group assembled in front of the Westgate Hotel and called for the release of their comrades. What happened next is not clear, but a gun was fired in the struggle between specials and Chartists, and this was taken as the sign for a full assault on the hotel. Unknown to the rebels, a contingent of soldiers were stationed in the building, they fired on the Chartists, and at least ten died there and then. The dead

John Meirs Horner Autobiography During the previous three or four years, I had been wrought up over the subject of religion. The Methodists were the most persistent in my neighborhood, and my preference was for them. In these days came ministers of a new sect, calling themselves Latter-day Saints, with a new revelation, preaching the gospel of the New Testament, with its gifts and blessings. It attracted much attention; people listened and some obeyed, thereby enjoying the promised blessings. Members of the Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian faith, as well as non-professors began to join them. Among the latter class were my father, mother and sisters. I was the first of the family to obey, being baptized by Erastus Snow, in the Layawa Creek, on the second day of August, 1840. In the spring of 1843, I went up to Nauvoo. Here I was introduced to and shook hands with the Prophet Joseph Smith. I stopped in Nauvoo during the summer and was one of the four men who laid the brick in David Yearsley's three story house, and in the Masonic brick lodge, under the guidance of Brother George Woodward, who was one of the four. Mixing mortar, handling the trowel, the square, the saw, the plane, etc., was new work for me, but, as in the case of using farm tools, I found it a great help in after years. Finally the word came that the Saints were going to leave Nauvoo for California, then a province of Mexico, and counsel was given for the eastern Saints to charter a ship and go around the Horn to California. [In 1846, a group of Mormons came to the San Francisco Bay region aboard the ship

T he Horner Flooring Company is a charter member of the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association (MFMA), and in 2004 celebrates its one hundred and thirteenth year as a quality manufacturer of northern hard maple sport flooring. For over 113 years, the Horner name has exemplified the phrase Tradition of Excellence, providing affordable, top-quality flooring materials to schools, colleges, universities and private clubs throughout the world. Horner Flooring Company was started by William S. Horner in Reed City, Michigan in 1891. At that time, pine resources in the area had started to dwindle, so Horner decided to convert his existing pine planing mill to hardwood flooring manufacture. In doing so, he became the first manufacturer of hardwood flooring prior to this development, hardwood flooring had been a custom-made product.. As the world's first mass-producer of hardwood flooring, Horner can truly be called The Oldest Name in Hardwood Flooring. By 1914, hardwood resources in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan had also dwindled, and it was increasingly apparent to William Horner that Michigan's densely forested Upper Peninsula would be a better location for the company. A new mill was constructed in Newberry, in the eastern Upper Peninsula, where Horner could draw on some of the highest quality hardwood resources available. The new mill was soon turning out flooring at the rate of 37 million board feet per year, making Horner the largest producer of hardwood flooring in the world. In 1931 Horner Flooring relocated from Newberry to its present location in Dollar Bay on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, amid vast stands of top-quality northern hardwoods.
