Biography
William Edmonds Horner, anatomist, was born on 3 June 1793 in Warrenton, Va., to William and Mary (Edmonds) Horner. On 26 Oct. 1820 he married Elizabeth Welsh of Philadelphia; they had 10 children. He died in Philadelphia on 13 March 1853.
As a child, Horner was educated in the schools of Warrenton and Dumfries. He later studied medicine under John Spence and received his M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1814. While in medical school, the War of 1812 began and Horner took time away from his studies to serve a commission as Surgeon’s Mate in the U.S. Army. After the war ended, he resigned his commission and briefly set up private practice in Warrenton, but moved permanently to Philadelphia in 1816.
Horner spent his career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he held successive positions: Dissector (1816-1818), Demonstrator of Anatomy (1818-1820), Adjunct Professor of Anatomy (1820-1831), and Professor of Anatomy (1831-1853).

Horner, 1821-1975 Biographical Alfred Rives Shands, Jr., orthopedic surgeon, was born in 1899. He was the great grandson of physician William E. Horner (1793-1853). Shands attended the University of Virginia, receiving his A.B. in 1918 and M.D. in 1922. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had one son, Alfred. Shands died in 1981. Shands was an Instructor in Orthopedic Surgery at, first, Johns Hopkins University Medical School (1926-1927), then George Washington University Medical School (1927-1930). From 1930 to 1937, he was Associate Professor of Surgery in charge of Orthopedic Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. He then came to Delaware to establish the Nemours Foundation, became its Medical Director, and was Surgeon inChief at the Alfred I. DuPont Institute. He was also a Visiting Professor in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Shands was elected to non resident fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1941. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, the American Orthopedic Association, and the Southern Surgical Association. Scope and contents This small collection of correspondence and related materials, 1821-1975, assembled by Alfred Rives Shands, Jr., documents his research on William E. Horner. The collection is divided into four series. Series 1 contains Shands' correspondence, 1948-1975, concerning the loan and ultimate disposition of a collection of Horner papers and relics at the University of Pennsylvania and Shands' attempt to publish Horner's 1821 European diary. Series 2 contains two printed items concerning Horner's life. Shands' typed transcript of Horner's 1821 diary is preserved in Series 3. The diary contains Horner's observations on life and conditions in England, the Netherlands, and France; Particular emphasis is placed on the anatomical collections and hospitals which Horner visited. The diary also contains Horner's views on the teaching of anatomy. Typed transcripts and one original letter of William E. Horner are preserved in Series 4. There are two letters, 1821 and 1840, from Horner to his father. The 1821 letter describes 4th of July celebrations by Americans in Paris and Horner's meeting with General Lafayette. The 1840 letter, which exists in its original form is a lengthy discussion of Horner's religious life and reasons for conversion to Roman Catholicism. There are also copies of letters from Charles Vizzardelli, secretary to Pope Gregory XVI, 1840, and the Pope himself, 1844, thanking Horner for gifts of books. Provenance This collection of research and correspondence of Alfred Rives Shands, Jr., was donated to the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Elizabeth Shands, 301 Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, Delaware, 19707, through the agency of David Y. Cooper, on 9 June 1986. The collection was processed and catalogued in April 1990. According to information received from David Y. Cooper, the original 1821 diary and letters of William E. Horner were donated to the University of Pennsylvania. 1821-1975 1 box and 1 folder 4/25/1990 jde

    Abstract
'Composition and Sacrilege, a necessarily practical justification.'
The aim of this PhD by project is to draw out the problematic relationship between a fine art practice in sculpture and its necessary critical and theoretic discourse. The methods with which this relation is drawn out will be sculptural in as much as they will bring to bear a body of evidence, a body that will also figure itself in the form of textual analysis. In this respect, the 'practice' will not be positioned simply as the subject of the 'theory', but both will be taken as interdependent. This uniquely resourceful site of praxis will be animated then, with the problems of ethics and aesthetics; the project will aim not only to provide a self-reflective and historic account of this site of praxis, but will aim to originate its research from the studio context - it will commit acts of knowledge and prejudice judgements of value.
The anomalies, divergences and ruptures that occur within this contestation of praxis is what the project aims to draw in and unfold. They will be the project’s truth content, the conditions of its possibility, and the symptoms of its originality.

Recent Up a category Between Men and The Country Wife Eva Sedgwick writes, "Pinchwife and Sparkish represent two extremes of the male traffic in women: Pinchwife fears the exchange to an obsessive degree and tries to take himself out of it (which he canít do) while Sparkish seeks it out to an obsessive degree such that he becomes 'a pander to [his] own wife.'" Horns of plenty Dudlye Stone writes, "The diarist John Evelyn was right when he said, in 1688, 'So long as men are false and women vain/While gold continues to be virtue's bane/In pointed satire Wycherley shall reign.'" The Country Wife Brings 15th century to Life Laurie Waninger writes, "Although seeing the outline of a woman’s legs and buttocks is no longer the major titillation that it was for male spectators in England during the 1600’s, Mia Stendahl played the role of Margery Pinchwife as if it were indeed."

Map of Route 3000 The Prince William Parkway runs between Route 234 Dumfries Road in Manassas to York and Summerland Drives in Woodbridge. The Parkway is a 4 to 6 lane divided major arterial highway which links Manassas and the Potomac Mills-Dale City-Woodbridge areas of Prince William County. These are the two most populous areas of the county. Upon completion of the Route 234 Bypass in Manassas, the Prince William Parkway will provide part of a continuous 4 to 6 lane arterial route from I-66 to I-95 in Prince William County (via Route 234 and the Parkway itself). Currently, the eastern end of the Prince William Parkway is at York and Summerland Drives. The Prince William County Comprehensive Plan shows an extension of the Parkway that would end at US 1 in the area of Marumsco Plaza. Fairfax County Parkway in that it is a wide, well-built almost freeway type road. The other sections of the Prince William Parkway are more like arterial roads in that they have limited intersections and driveway cuts, but have many businesses lining each side of the road. This is especially true in the Potomac Mills area. In the Summer of 2000, the Liberia Avenue extension opened from the intersection of the the Prince William Parkway and Richmond Avenue to VA 234 Dumfries Road in Manassas. The planning maps that I have seen call this new stretch of road Liberia Avenue. However, it is signed as the Prince William Parkway. I am unsure as to the route number of this new section of the Parkway as VDOT has not installed any route number signs. The new road is built much like the original section of the Prince William Parkway west of Davis Ford Road and Hoadly Road. This section of the Parkway will tie into VA 234 where the VA 234 Bypass rejoins the original section of VA 234. There is also construction west of VA 234 that will realign Brentsville Road to a 4-way intersection (future interchange) with the Prince William Parkway.
