William Horner was educated at Kingswood School Bristol. At the almost unbelievable age of 14 he became an assistant master at Kingswood school in 1800 and headmaster 4 years later. He left Bristol and founded his own school in 1809 in Bath. Horner's only significant contribution to mathematics was Horner's method for solving algebraic equations. It was submitted to the Royal Society on 1 July 1819 and was published in the same year in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. Some years earlier Ruffini had described a similar method which had won him the gold medal offered by the Italian Mathematical Society for Science who had asked for improved methods for numerical solutions to equations. However neither Ruffini nor Horner was the first to discover this method as it was known to Zhu Shijie 500 years earlier. In the 19 th and early 20 th centuries Horner's method has had a prominent place in English and American textbooks on algebra. It is not unreasonable to ask why that should be. William G. Horner, p. 1452
WILLIAM G. HORNER is descended from one of the oldest pioneer families of Washington county, Penn., his grandfather, William Horner, having come hither from Adams county, Penn., in 1800, and passed the remainder of his life in agricultural pursuits. He died about the year 1860. Joseph Horner (son of William) was born in 1806, and grew to manhood on the home farm. He married Catherine Mitchell, who was also a native of Washington county, born August 25, 1817, and the young people settled on the home farm. The following children were born to their union: William G., Elizabeth B. (Mrs. Samuel Mitchell, of Piatt county, Ill.), Nancy C. (wife of David Templeton, of North Strabane township), Mary (Mrs. Abner Myers, of Somerset county, Penn.), Louisa (living at home), and Martha J., Sarah E. and Margaret (all three deceased). Mr. and Mrs. Horner were members of the Presbyterian Church. The father of this family died May 29, 1874, and the mother passed away April 30, 1887. William G. Horner was born September 16, 1834, on the home farm in North Strabane township. He was educated in the usual log-cabin country school of the vicinity, but has broadened his educational knowledge by observation and experience. He has always followed agricultural pursuits, and is the owner of a well-cultivated and productive farm, which is furnished with fine stock. He is an active politician, and has ever been a leader in all progressive movements of the community which tend to improve the general welfare. Mr. Horner has never married, but his maiden sister, who is living with him, assists in providing the comforts and luxuries of a pleasant home.

The Zoetrope was a cylindrical toy through which one can see a picture move. The rotating drum has equally spaced peepholes on the outside, and a series of still images on the inside showing a figure in graduating stages of motion. As the drum spins (faster than 12 images per second), the dark frames of the still pictures disappear and the figure appears to move.
