Nobel Prize in Mathematics
A trick question! There is no Nobel prize in mathematics. Why not? That question has created numerous stories, myths, and anecdotes. The most popular is that Nobel's wife had an affair with a mathematician, usually said to be Mittag-Leffler, and in revenge Nobel refused to endow one of his prizes in mathematics. Too bad for this story that Nobel was a life-long bachelor! The other common story is that Mittag-Leffler, the leading Swedish mathematician of Nobel's time, antagonized Nobel and so Nobel gave no prize in mathematics to prevent Mittag-Leffler from becoming a winner. This story is also suspect, however, because Nobel and Mittag-Leffler had almost no contact with each other. Most likely Nobel simply never gave any thought to including mathematics among his list of prize areas.

Excellent book Unique selection of topics This is the only textbook that I know that introduces and explains the Hilbert-Riemann problem in a pedagogical way. If anyone knows of any other such book, please tell us. It also deals in a very introductory way with all sort of really nice topics that one cannot find discussed (at a really introductory level) in any similar book: the Painleve property, the classification of singularities, asymptotic expansions, etc, etc. All very powerful applied mathematics. A very good text! A very good text! The best description of this book is that it provides a comprehensive, classical treatment of the subject with a modern touch and serves ideally the needs of anyone studying Complex Analysis. Starting from the foundations of defining a complex number, through to applications in the evaluation of integrals, the WKB method, Fourier transforms and Riemann-Hilbert problems, the book covers a lot of ground in an easy to follow style. The chapters are long, but logically broken down into digestible sections and interspersed with well illustrated diagrams, numerous worked examples and exercises. The end of chapter exercises provide further opportunity for reinforcing the methods and there's a useful section at the end giving brief hints and answers to selected problems.

  • Paperback: 304 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.73 x 9.52 x 6.52 Publisher: Springer Verlag; (October 1997)
  • ISBN: 3540629211 Book Description In this introductory textbook, a revised and extended version of well-known lectures by L. Hrmander from 1986, four chapters are devoted to weak solutions of systems of conservation laws. Apart from that the book only studies classical solutions. Two chapters concern the existence of global solutions or estimates of the lifespan for solutions of nonlinear perturbations of the wave or Klein-Gordon equation with small initial data. Four chapters are devoted to microanalysis of the singularities of the solutions. This part assumes some familiarity with pseudodifferential operators which are standard in the theory of linear differential operators, but the extension to the more exotic classes of opertors needed in the nonlinear theory is presented in complete detail.

    John Horvath Reminiscences
When I arrived at the University of Maryland in 1957, it was one of the most important centers for partial differential equations in the whole world. Most of the activity took place in the Institute for Fluid Dynamics and Applied Mathematics, which was situated on the third floor of the present Mathematics Building, while the Department of Mathematics occupied the first and the second floor. The fourth floor is a later addition. Many of the mathematicians at the Institute had a joint appointment in the Department, and did teach a course. Some, who originally came to the Institute, switched to the Department. Two of those are still with us, though both are emeriti now. One of them, Karl Stellmacher, gave a negative solution to a celebrated problem of Hadamard whether the only partial differential operators which exhibit Huygens' phenomenon are those which can be obtained by a change of variables from the wave operator. Among Avron Douglis' numerous publications, there is one written in collaboration with Shmuel Agmon and Louis Nirenberg which is one of the most often quoted papers in the history of mathematics. The first generation of member of the Institute was recruited by Monroe Martin, it first director, and by Alexander Weinstein, who has outstanding contributions to eigenvalues and to singular partial differential operators. Unfortunately Weinstein had a difficult personality, and some of those who came because of him, left because of him.
