A TRIBUTE TO GRACE MURRAY HOPPER
Born: December 9, 1906 Died: January 1, 1992 "It is easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to get permission" - Rear Admiral Grace Hopper
Pioneer Computer Scientist
"Amazing Grace" Hopper may have been ahead of her time. Known as the "Mother of Computing," her work with the first computers put us on the track to making computers accessible to everyone. The things that she did and accomplished were not common for women of her day. The new discipline of computing and the sciences have opened doors, making space for women's participation on an equal basis. Because of all of her contributions, women today have more opportunities. This page was created by Heather Lide for WS 200 Introduction to Women's Studies at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, February 2001.

Her career began when she joined the Navy and was assigned to work with Commander Howard Aitken at Harvard on the Mark 1. It was here she coined the term, "debugging" when a moth caused the Mark II to fail. In 1949 she joined the Eckert-Mauchly Corporation where she designed the first compiler, A-0. The industry group developing COBOL, partially supervised by Hopper, used Flowmatic, a business programming language she had developed as a model. Hopper become known as the grandmother of COBOL. Besides her work on COBOL, Hopper was known for her technical vision and ideas on computer applications and for tools for compiling and programming such as subroutines, relative addressing, linking loaders, code optimization and symbolic manipulation.

A Brief History of Programming Languages
September 1995 20th Anniversary / A Brief History of Programming Languages
We've come a long way from computers programmed with wires and punch cards. Maybe not as far as some would like, though. Here are the innovations in programming.
ca. 1946 Konrad Zuse , a German engineer working alone while hiding out in the Bavarian Alps, develops Plankalkul. He applies the language to, among other things, chess. Short Code , the first computer language actually used on an electronic computing device, appears. It is, however, a "hand-compiled" language. Grace Hopper , working for Remington Rand, begins design work on the first widely known compiler, named A-0. When the language is released by Rand in 1957, it is called MATH-MATIC. Alick E. Glennie

Grace Hopper Project
What is it?
The Grace Hopper Project is an exciting one week program designed for young women who will complete the 9th, 10th or 11th grade by June, 2004. The program explores computer technology by introducing students to advanced multimedia design and development; dynamic web programming; computer-assisted virtual environments; and both hardware and software life cycle management from initial conception/design to operation/support. Projects will focus on developing practical computer skills. Each day includes hands-on computer projects and opportunities to talk with women scientists and engineers, learn about careers of the future and have lots of fun exploring the UM campus and selected high technology sites. This project is sponsored by the Women in Science and Engineering Program at the University of Michigan, College of Engineering and the School of Information . What will I learn?

Captain Hopper's Association with the Town of Wolfeboro and Brewster Academy
Captain Hopper was among a third generation of Murrays to have lived in Wolfeboro as a seasonal resident. Her brother, Dr. Roger F. Murray, an economist and former associate dean of the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, was a full-time resident of Wolfeboro, as are other members of his family. Captain Hopper, who traveled extensively for NAVDAC, the Naval Automation Data Command, in Washington, had often stated that Wolfeboro was her second home, the place where she planned to retire, "if I ever retire." Captain Hopper maintained a lifelong passion for teaching, for advancing her own knowledge and then sharing it with others. She was very concerned that modern technology be used purposefully, that information be tapped intelligently and that solutions to world problems be approached both compassionately and rationally using technological tools. She was dedicated to transferring her knowledge and instilling her values in younger generations. Therefore, before her death she was most gracious in encouraging computer learning and a historical perspective at our school. She dazzled our students with her seriousness of purpose and her resilient, humorous and resourceful nature. It is not only "programming" that we want to teach here, but the human and the humane factors that go into decision making and problem solving. We want to create a learning program worthy of its new name.

    Grace Hopper holding a nanosecond
by Margaret Rouse, Associate Editor, Whatis.com I would like to nominate December 9th, the birthday of Admiral Grace Hopper, to be our first international IT holiday. Why Grace Hopper, you ask? Well, I'll tell you. Anyone whose obituary in Time magazine says "She is perhaps best known for having said "It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission" deserves a holiday named after her. How would we celebrate Grace Hopper Day, you ask? Let's take a quick look at some of Admiral Hopper's contributions and see what we can come up with. Grace Murray Hopper, a pioneer in computer science, is generally credited with developments that led to COBOL, the programming language for business applications on which the world's largest corporations ran for more than a generation. After receiving her Ph.D. in mathematics at Yale, Hopper worked as an associate professor at Vassar College before joining the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1943. She went on to work as a researcher and mathematician at the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corp. and the Sperry Corporation. Having retired from the Navy after World War II, she returned in 1967 to work at the Naval Data Automation Command. By the time of her death in 1992, Rear Admiral Grace Hopper had left many contributions to the field of software engineering and was arguably the world's most famous programmer.

Taming KULL the Conquerer: Innovative CS Development in a 3D, Parallel Multi-Physics Application The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing 2002 is the fourth in a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today's technology fields. Past Grace Hopper Celebrations have resulted in collaborative proposals, networking and mentoring for junior women, and increased visibility for the contributions of women in computing. This year's theme, "Ubiquity," focuses on the ubiquity of the impact of computers on our daily lives and the ubiquity of the impact women are making on this technical force.
