William M. Kent has been promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Johns Hopkins Medical Services Corporation (MSC). He has served as vice president for clinical operations at MSC for the last two and a half years.
In a letter announcing the appointment, Ronald R. Peterson, president of the Johns Hopkins Health System, praised Kent's outstanding leadership qualities. "He has improved operations dramatically at the seventeen sites managed by the Medical Services Corporations."
Kent began his career at Hopkins as manager of ambulatory care operations at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1989. In 1991, he became director of administrative services for the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center before joining the MSC in 1995.
"At a time when Hopkins faces many challenges in the evolving health care marketplace, the Medical Services Corporation remains committed to bringing Hopkins quality health care to the communities it serves throughout Maryland," said Kent.
Kent earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Wittenberg University before obtaining a masters in health administration from Washington University School of Medicine in 1987. He lives in Baltimore with his wife, Karen, and their two-year-old daughter, Lauren.

07.11 - This is an interview with former Two-time WBA middleweight champion William Joppy from Lincoln Park, MD now(32-21) with 24KO's who's on the phone with me as he prepares for his next outing since his lost a 5th round KO to four-time world champion Felix "Tito" Trinidad on May 12 this year. The former world champion will make his next ring appearance on November 17, on Rahman-Lewis card, at mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas against WBA number-one unbeaten Englishman Howard Eastman (32-0) for the vacant WBA middleweight championship. Bernard Hopkins vacated the title after being crown the super champion. Joppy began his professional career on Febuary 26, 1993 in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania by scoring a four-rounds decision over Dwayne Tennet. He lost non of his 22 fights when he became WBA No.1 mandatory challenger. On June 24, 1996, Joppy dismantled Shinji Takehara in ninth round to obtain the WBA middleweight championship in Yokohama, Japan. Joppy floored Takehara in round-one with an overhand right and continued to punish him with combination before ref steped in to stop the fight in 9. Joppy's first lost came August 23, 1997 in Madison Square Garden, New York City when he lost a 12 rounds controversial decision to former champion, Julio Ceasers Green. On January 31, 1998, Joppy avenged his lost to Green by 12th round decision. His second lost came in May when Trinidad Koed him in fifth to grab the WBA middleweight.

Sarah Orillia Tillotson and William Thaddeus Hopkins
Sarah Orillia Tillotson was born July 8, 1860 in Duplain, Clinton County, Michigan. (Sarah's middle name also appears as "Orilla". Sarah's daughter Lorene spelled it Orillia.) Sarah's nickname was "Sade" or "Sadie." Sarah was the daughter of Franklin James Tillotson and Jane Ann Sexton , and the sister of my great-grandfather James Francis Tillotson . Sarah married William Thaddeus Hopkins on November 30, 1881. He was usually called "Thad" by the family. Thad was the son of Samuel W. Hopkins and Nancy Rolin Brough. Nancy's name sometimes appears as Nancy Broof, probably representing the way it was pronounced. Samuel's middle name appears as both Wilson and William. Samuel and Nancy were from Virginia. Samuel was probably born in Roanoke County, Virginia. Samuel and Nancy moved to Warren County, Missouri in 1858. Thad was born May 1, 1859 in Warrenton, Warren County, Missouri. Samuel and Nancy moved their family to Kansas in 1877. Both Samuel and Nancy died in Enterprise, Dickinson County, Kansas and are buried there. Samuel was a grain dealer. He served on the Union side during the Civil War. His brother Charles fought on the side of the Confederacy. Samuel also served as a police judge and marshall in Enterprise.

Bernard Hopkins

Book Review: Physiological
Introduction to Plant Physiology Hopkins, William G. 1999 ISBN 0-471-19281-3 (cloth US $97.95) 2nd Edition, 512 pp Wiley Publishers, 605 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10158. With the increase in use of the powerful tools of molecular biology, plant physiology has been a very active field in recent years. It is more important than ever that students who are interested in botany have a good grasp of this discipline. To this end, William Hopkins presents a text with a focus on the fundamental concepts of plant physiology. The book consists of 23 chapters and is divided into four parts: Plants, Water, and Minerals; Plants, Energy and Carbon; Regulation of Plant Development; and Stress Physiology and Biotechnology. The text is well-written and is at the appropriate level for second year undergraduates and above. Many of the topics are presented within a historical perspective, which I find quite useful in upper level undergraduate courses. The diagrams in this book are very effective and should provide a good learning aid to students. Many of the figures are directly from the scientific literature, but the author has redrawn some of them. For instance in the section on phototropism, the author replots a potentially confusing photon fluence-response curve into a figure easily understandable to the reader. Each chapter concludes with a list of references cited. and additional suggestions for further reading (review articles and/or books). The author seems to make a point of including some current (to 1997) references in his list.

Thomas Sternhold
Attended Oxford, but did not graduate. He became the "Groom of the Robes" of Henry VIII, and retained this office under Edward VI. Sternhold first began his work on the Psalms for his own "Godly Solace" and is said to have sung them while accompanying himself on the organ. Apparently the young Edward VI heard them and asked for them to be repeated in his presence. Edward later provided patronage for Sternhold to work on his Psalms.
Sternhold composed his Psalms to be sung as ballads, which he hoped would replace the "amorous and obscene" songs commonly sung by the courtiers. Sternhold died in 1549.
John Hopkins
A clergyman and schoolmaster in Suffolk who apparently became Editor of Sternhold's psalter after Sternhold's death. He published a version of the Psalter shortly after Sternhold's death. His name is mentioned as having been one of the exiles during Queen Mary's reign, but his place of exile is unknown, but he re-appeared after the exile and in 1560 he brought a large number of Psalms to Daye's edition of 1560-1561.
Hopkins contributed 60 Psalms to the 1562 Psalter, which is more than any other contributor by a considerable margin. All of his Psalms are in Common Metre, like Sternhold's, but they differ in that Sternhold only rhymed the second and fourth lines of his verses, while Hopkins would rhyme both the first and third and the second and fourth lines.
