Robert Hooke: the man who knew everything
This exhibition was on display at the Royal Observatory Greenwich and closed on 31 January 2004 He is but of midling stature, something crooked, pale faced, and his face but little below, but his head is lardge, his eie full and popping.
John Aubrey, Antiquarian and friend of Robert Hooke By the mid-17th century, much of what underpinned Western thought was being questioned and replaced by a new way of thinking based on experimentation and observation.  Robert Hooke emerged as one of the leaders of this new age. Born in 1635 in Freshwater, Isle of Wight, he was educated at home until the age of 13 and then at Westminster School. In 1653, he went on to Oxford University. His interests spanned a wide range of topics. Best known as an astronomer and instrument maker, he was also a skilled physician, surveyor, architect, anatomist and artist. Hooke died in March 1703. No portraits of him survive. Like his image, his reputation is somewhat forgotten; yet his diverse skills and originality of thought made him an equal to the most eminent scholars of his day.

Robert Hooke
In 1663, Hooke was officially elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, and two years later he received an appointment as Professor of Geometry at Gresham College. The latter position was accompanied by a suite of rooms at the college where Hooke lived and worked for the rest of his life. During this period, Hooke's interest in microscopy and astronomy soared, and he published Micrographia , his best known work on optical microscopy in 1665. The next year, Hooke published a volume on comets, Cometa detailing his close observation of the comets occurring in 1664 and 1665. Later in 1666, he was appointed surveyor of London, shortly after the Great Fire, and designed a number of buildings including the Royal College of Physicians, Bethlehem Hospital, and Montague House. After Henry Oldenburg's death in 1677, Hooke succeeded to the post of Secretary of the Royal Society, which he maintained for the next 16 years. Micrographia encompassed the first important set of observations using an early microscope equipped with compound magnifying lenses and was illustrated by elaborate drawings (his finely-detailed drawing of a flea is famous). Hooke observed a wide diversity of organisms including insects, sponges, bryozoans, diatoms, and bird feathers. Perhaps less well known, Robert Hooke coined the term "cell", in a biological context, as he described the microscopic structure of cork like a tiny, bare room or monk's cell in his landmark discovery of plant cells with cell walls. Hooke was able to confirm Leeuwenhoek's surprising observations of bacteria and protozoans, leading to the general acceptance of the Dutch scientist's results by the established scientific community. Hooke, much preferring his compound microscopes, did not conduct a substantial number of experiments with Leeuwenhoek-style microscopes, and criticized these simple instruments as offensive to his eyes.

NIGEL BENNETT
Robert Hooke in "Isaac Newton: A Tale of Two Isaacs" Smouldering rage and jealousy are the hallmarks of Nigel Bennett's portrayal of Newton's key rival, the Royal Society's secretary Robert Hooke. "Hooke's problem was that he had come up with the same theory that Newton hadexcept he couldn't prove it, and I think this just about drove Hooke crazy," says Bennett. "He really did think that Newton had stolen his idea. In the end, he's known for inventing the universal joint, which must have been a bit of a letdown, compared to Newton's fame!" Nigel Bennett was born in Wolverhampton in the English Midlands. The son of working-class parentshis father was a toolfitter and his mother was a welderhe earned a scholarship to Tetten Hall College, a boy's private school where, at age 11, he was intrigued by the notion of performing after playing an Egyptian citizen in a production of Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra. After studying theatre and history at the University of Wales, he earned his Equity card by working for an innovative Welsh Educational Authority program that saw him teach and act in schools throughout the country. After several years with this "mobile theatre," followed by a stint in repertory and an Italian tour (playing Riffraff) in The Rocky Horror Show, he and his then-wife, a Canadian actress, moved to Toronto in 1987. When not not a film or TV set, Bennett lives in a log cabin near Lindsay, Ont., on a woodland farm large enough, at 44 acres, to safely practise one of his hobbies: archery. He also likes to fish and golf (during a break in Ireland, where Isaac Newton was filmed, he got to play at Druid's Glen, site of the 1997 Irish Open). His sons (Matthew, 11, and Sam, 6) live with their mother in Toronto and are showing a keen interest, he says proudly, in following in their parents' professional footsteps: "Michael has done plays and extra work, and Sam just went to his first audition."

Hooke, Robert
English instrument-maker, experimentalist, and natural philosopher who made key contributions in a wide range of areas including physiology, geology, and mechanics. Born on the Isle of Wight, Hooke showed early aptitude with the design of mechanical toys. At Westminster School he learnt mathematics and geometry, and at Christ Church, Oxford, he joined a remarkable group of natural philosophers working before the Restoration on physiological and physical topics (Frank 1980). Much of Hooke’s career was driven by financial uncertainty. As an employee, working firstly with Robert Boyle and then as curator of experiments at the new Royal Society from 1662 to 1677, Hooke’s status as a professional in a society of gentlemen natural philosophers was problematic. He was continually concerned to establish his credibility, and his defences of ownership of his ideas were often vitriolic.
