Charles Hodge on Law and Religion
by Steven Alan Samson
See also: Christianity and Nineteenth Century American Law , to which the following article was originally an appendix. In his Systematic Theology (1871), Charles Hodge did not simply argue that, according to custom, the law should reflect the common faith of people who were "Christians and Protestants". Instead, he urged that the administration of civil government in general must conform to the laws of religion. "Those laws are ordained, administered, and enforced by God, and there is no escape from their obligation, or from the penalties attached to their violation. " Hodge here reflects the view of the Westminster divines that the ruler is a "nursing father". This does not mean that every precept of Christianity should be taught or enforced by government, since the state is not constituted for that purpose. "But as [government] cannot violate the moral law in its own action, or require the people to violate it, so neither can it ignore Christianity in its official action. It cannot require the people or any of its officers to do what Christianity forbids, nor forbid their doing anything which Christianity enjoins." At the same time, Hodge declared that full religious liberty prevails in the land: "All are welcomed: all are admitted to equal rights and privileges. All are allowed to acquire property and to vote in every election, made eligible to all offices, and invested with equal influence in all public affairs. All are allowed to worship as they please, or not to worship at all if they see fit. No man is molested for his religion or for his want of religion. No man is required to profess any form of faith, or to join any religious association. More than this cannot reasonably be demanded "

In response to an inquiry about Percy Herbert Wilkin in the Washington State Forum, there was an inquiry about some possible relationships. The following are responses I posted there and now wish to post here as well as New York.
Janice Dailey, Thank you for your response to my Percy Herbert Wilkin message. To answer your inquiry about the possibilities of Percy Herbert Wilkin being related to James and Bartholomew Conley: My Grandfather Wilkin (William Herbert Wilkin) and my Grandmother Wilkin (Mary Hodge Percy Wilkin) lived in Phillipsburg, New Jersey for all of my knowledge of themwhich is not very much. However, I know that there were Wilkin kin from the New York area, and there is information in my records that William Herbert Wilkin was born on Staten Island. From the 1930 census data, William Herbert Wilkin was born about 1879. From the same census data, his father was born in Northern Ireland and his mother was born in New York. Mary Hodge Percy Wilkin was born in England as were both of her parents. Mary was born about 1875. I have some family pictures that have some names on them, and hopefully this weekend I will have time to research in them for some other names that might be pertinent.

Biographical Sketch
Charles Hodge (Dec. 27, 1797 - June 19, 1878) theologian, and leader in the Presbyterian Church, was born in Philadelphia, son of Dr. Hugh Hodge, a surgeon in the Continental Army and later in Philadelphia, and Mary Blanchard. Charles was educated at Princeton (Class of 1815) and went on to attend the Princeton Theological Seminary (graduated 1819). His training in theology, especially his instruction by Archibald Alexander, was later to shape his thought and life's work. He became an instructor at the seminary in 1820, and taught there all his life, except for two years of study in France and Germany (1826-1828). His subjects were Biblical and Oriental literature from 1822 to 1840, after which date he concentrated on theology.

Hodge has coached on the college level for the past 28 years. In five years at Rider Coach Hodge has already led the men to ten team records, and had 15 regional qualifiers, including three All-East performers. He guided the women to 30 team records and one All-East performer. His 2000 men's cross country team placed third, the highest finish ever in the MAAC. Both the men's and women indoor and outdoor track and field teams placed runner-up seven times in the MAAC Championships. "Coach Hodge brings a wealth of experience to Rider, and has been instrumental in the success of all previous programs he’s been associated with," said Rider Director of Athletics Curt Blake. "I feel it’s tremendous to be able to work at Rider University, a program I have admired from afar," said Hodge, who led Robert Morris to their first ever men's and and women’s Northeast Conference indoor track championship before coming to Rider. Hodge began his coaching career at Wagner College, where his teams broke 20 school records during his tenure. At Lafayette, Hodge led his women’s track team to two indoor and outdoor East Coast Conference Championships. As an assistant at Bucknell, he helped the men’s cross country team finish 13 th "I’m excited to work with the Rider cross country and track program, one that has a proud tradition and with the outstanding athletes here, a tremendous future," Hodge added.

Ronald L. Ecker (aka William Pridgen)
I'm a librarian by profession, a writer by obsession. A recovered fundamentalist, I did postgraduate work in biblical studies at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School, and most of my books relate in some way to religion. My first published book, the DICTIONARY OF SCIENCE AND CREATIONISM, was selected by CHOICE as one of the "Outstanding Academic Books of 1990." (As of this writing it's out of print. Prometheus Books plans to reprint it, but I don't recommend its purchase. It's too out-of-date now as a reference book.) In 1993, over twenty years of spare-time work culminated in publication of my complete modern-English translation (with Chaucer scholar Eugene J. Crook) of THE CANTERBURY TALES . The translation has become a widely adopted text in college and university literature courses. My subsequent books include THE EVOLUTIONARY TALES : RHYME AND REASON ON CREATION/EVOLUTION (a parody of the Canturbury Tales) now in a second edition, both printed and online, and AND ADAM KNEW EVE : A DICTIONARY OF SEX IN THE BIBLE.
