William Hodge 's parents were Janet Vallence, whose father owned a confectionary business in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Archibald James Hodge who worked in the property market. William was the second of his parents' children, having one older brother and one younger sister. He was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh, entering in 1909 and studying there until 1920. While at the College he won a mathematical bursary which allowed him to progress to become a student at Edinburgh University. He was taught there by Whittaker who advised him to continue his studies at Cambridge. After graduating with First Class Honours in mathematics from Edinburgh in 1923, he entered St John's College, Cambridge. His studies at Cambridge were financed by a van Dunlop bursary which he had won from Edinburgh and a scholarship from St John's College. After gaining distinction in the Mathematical Tripos of 1925 he went on to win a Smith's Prize and spent a further year researching at Cambridge financed by a Ferguson scholarship. Hodge was appointed to an assistant lectureship at the University of Bristol in 1926 and spent five years there. During this period he married Kathleen Anne Cameron, the daughter of the manager of the Edinburgh branch of Oxford University Press. They had one son and one daughter.

His main interests were in algebraic geometry and differential geometry. In 1930 he applied ideas of Lefschetz to solve a problem posed by Severi Hodge developed the relationship between geometry, analysis and topology and is best remembered for his theory of harmonic integrals. He held a chair at Cambridge from 1936 to 1970. He was one of the originators of the British Mathematical Colloquium, an annual conference which visits different British universities. He also played a major role in setting up the International Mathematical Union in 1952. He received the Royal Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1957 and was knighted in 1959. The Royal medal was awarded by the Royal Society in:- ... recognition of his distinguished work on algebraic geometry. Hodge conjecture
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition The Hodge conjecture is a major unsolved problem of algebraic geometry Algebraic geometry is a branch of mathematics which, as the name suggests, combines abstract algebra, especially commutative algebra, with geometry. It can be seen as the study of solution sets of systems of algebraic equations . When there is more than one variable, geometric considerations enter, and are important to understand the phenomenon. One can say that the subject starts where equation solving leaves off, and it becomes at least as important to understand the totality of solutions of a system of equations as to find some solution; this does lead into some of the deepest waters in the whole of mathematics, both conceptually and in terms of technique.
Click the link for more information. . It is a conjectural description of the link between the algebraic topology Algebraic topology is a branch of mathematics in which tools from abstract algebra are used to study topological spaces.
The method of algebraic invariants
The goal is to take topological spaces, and further categorize or classify them. An older name for the subject was combinatorial topology, implying an emphasis on how a space X was contructed from simpler ones. The basic method now applied in algebraic topology is to investigate spaces via algebraic invariants: for example by mapping them to groups, which have a great deal of manageable structure, in a way that respects the relation of homeomorphism of spaces.

A Euro Conference celebrating the Centenary of
Sir William Hodge (1903-1975)
Edinburgh, 20-26 July 2003
Scientific Programme Conference Arrangements Conference Home Page Hodge theory was described by Hermann Weyl as 'one of the landmarks in the history of mathematics in the 20th century'. It is fitting that a meeting to celebrate Sir William Hodge's achievements should take place in the city of his birth and in the university where he received his undergraduate education.
The general theme will be the influence and development of Hodge Theory in various branches of mathematics and physics. The meeting will also incorporate an afternoon (hosted by the London and Edinburgh Mathematical Societies) with talks tied into the general theme, but suitable for a general mathematical audience. Biographical Sketch
Charles Hodge (Dec. 27, 1797 - June 19, 1878) theologian, and leader in the Presbyterian Church, was born in Philadelphia, son of Dr. Hugh Hodge, a surgeon in the Continental Army and later in Philadelphia, and Mary Blanchard. Charles was educated at Princeton (Class of 1815) and went on to attend the Princeton Theological Seminary (graduated 1819). His training in theology, especially his instruction by Archibald Alexander, was later to shape his thought and life's work. He became an instructor at the seminary in 1820, and taught there all his life, except for two years of study in France and Germany (1826-1828). His subjects were Biblical and Oriental literature from 1822 to 1840, after which date he concentrated on theology.
