Subject: This week in the xxx mathematics archive (14 Sep - 18 Sep) Author: greg@math.ucdavis.edu Organization: UC Davis Department of Mathematics Date: 17 Sep 1998 21:57:16 -0700 Here are this week's titles in the xxx mathematics archive, available at: http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/ Instructions for contributing articles are available at: http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/submissions.html I have various announcements and editorial comments concerning the xxx archive system this week. o Thanks to the xxx staff and the xxx computer science advisory committee, the xxx computer science archive is now officially in operation. Eventually an imitation of the Front may appear for computer science, or the Front may be extended to include more of the xxx system, but for now you should browse it directly at: http://xxx.lanl.gov/archive/cs/intro.html Physics, mathematics, and computer science make a strong triad. Hopefully one day the xxx system will encompass all of the mathematical and physical sciences. o The Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions archive has been merged with xxx, constituting 136 new e-prints plus 9 previously contributed by authors. Most of these are in CA: Classical Analysis. o My table of Fields medalists in the archive omitted Michael Freedman, who appeared via the MSRI preprint series migration: http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/search/author:freedman

Heisenbug
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Heisenbug is a term used in software programming to describe a computer bug A computer bug is an error, flaw, mistake or fault in a computer program which prevents it from working correctly. Bugs arise from mistakes and errors in either a program's source code or its design. It is said that there are bugs in all useful computer programs, but well-written programs contain relatively few bugs, and these bugs typically do not prevent the program from performing its task. Buggy programs (sometimes referred to as defective software), are those applications which contain a large number of bugs, and/or bugs which seriously interfere with the program's functionality.

A common example are bugs that occur in a release-mode compile of a program but do not occur when researched under debug-mode, or some bugs caused by a race condition A race hazard (or race condition ) is a flaw in a system or process where the output exhibits unexpected critical dependence on the relative timing of events. The term originates with the idea that two signals are racing each other to be the first to cause the output.

"Singularités franco-japonaises"
Lieu : CIRM (Marseille-Luminy)
Dates : 9 au 14 Septembre 2002
Heisuke HIRONAKA
