He was the son of astronomer William Herschel John Herschel originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy and made several important contributions to the improvement of photographic processes Cyanotype ). He coined the terms "photography", "negative", and "positive", and discovered sodium thiosulphite as a fixer of silver halides. Herschel was born at Slough Buckinghamshire , and studied at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge . He graduated as senior wrangler in 1813. It was during his time as an undergraduate that he became friends with Charles Babbage and George Peacock . He took up astronomy in 1816, building a reflecting telescope with a mirror 18 inches in diameter and with a 20 foot focal length. Between 1821 and 1823 he re-examined, with James South, the double stars catalogued by his father. For this work he was presented in 1826 with the Royal Astronomical Society 's gold medal; and with the Lalande Medal of the French Institute in 1825; while the Royal Society had in 1821 bestowed upon him the Copley Medal for his mathematical contributions to their Transactions. Christian Science
- No Contradiction Christian Science - A Contradiction In Terms?
Is the term "Christian Science" a contradiction in terms? Not at all. At least not if you're familiar with the history of true scientific endeavor. Nor is it a contradiction in terms if you are familiar with the hundreds of brilliant scientists today professing faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. On the other hand, if you're not aware of these things, but instead look to the public media for your worldview, you will indeed believe "Christian Science" is a contradiction in terms. Henry M. Morris, Ph.D., LL.D., Litt. D., writes, "One of the most serious fallacies of modern thought is the widespread notion that Biblical Christianity is in conflict with true science and, therefore, that genuine scientists cannot believe the Bible." (Henry M. Morris, "Men of Science, Men of God," Master Books, 2002, pg. 1). This is a terrible tragedy and a testament to the influence of atheistic humanism in our culture today. Christian Science - Post Modern Man's Scientific Heritage
"Christian Science" is by no means a contradiction in terms. To illustrate this basic fact, the following is a partial list of Christian scientists, many of whom are recognized today as the founding fathers of modern scientific disciplines. The following list is divided into five sections, "The Founders of Modern Science," "The Age of Newton," "Just Before Darwin," "Just After Darwin," and "The Modern Period." Brief biographies on each scientist can be found in "Men of Science, Men of God" by Henry M. Morris (Master Books, 2002).

Introduction
The year was 1843, and the theme of English meteorology was measurement. Sir 'Thunder-and-Lightning' William Snow Harris was given his last British Association grant to complete the Plymouth series of over 120 000 thermometric observations, publication of which proved a costly venture, not least because the series implied no meteorological theory whatsoever.
Birt had already acted as Herschel's computing assistant in the arrangement and reduction of many series of barometric measurements and was enthusiastic to accept the offer. The British Association eventually entrusted him to investigate the properties of atmospheric waves, but in doing so, however, it unwittingly prepared the ground for the failure of what Joseph Agassi once called Herschel's 'philosophy of success.' After five reports for the British Association and several contributions to the Philosophical Magazine

Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel
Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel, better known as Sir William Herschel, was born in Hanover, Germany on November 15, 1738. Music was an important part of his upbringing, this became evident when he became a bandboy with the Hanoverian Guards. Later on he was either inducted or a volunteer in the military where he served only briefly. Due to his delicate health he discovered he was unsuited for army life and his father helped him to leave Germany for England in 1757 where he took up residence. He was later reunited with his brother, Alexander, and his sister Caroline who joined him in England. On March 13, 1781, while scanning the skies with a 7-inch reflecting telescope, he observed an unusual object; it presented an extended disk-like shape. Herschel thought he had discovered a comet. He continued his observations, and calculations for months, discovering the orbit lay well beyond the orbit of Saturn and was fairly circular. Herschel's "Comet" was in fact a planet. Different names were suggested, including his own name, "Herschel". He, however, wanted to call the new planet "Georgium Sidus," after his new patron, George Ill. This name, however, did not find favor with the astronomical community. It was eventually named Uranus after the mythological god of the skies.

John Glenn Archives Prior to his retirement from the United States Senate in 1998, John H. Glenn (D – 1975-1998) donated his papers and memorabilia to The Ohio State University in conjunction with the formation at the university of the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy. Beginning with the first shipment of papers in December 1998, the university received approximately 1,900 cubic feet of materials documenting the careers of John Glenn as a military aviator, NASA astronaut, businessman, and U.S. Senator. Housed at the Ohio State University Archives, the majority of the John Glenn Archives will be open to public research after the materials are processed and cataloged. The collection is divided into four major sub-groups: Senate Papers; Non-Senate Papers (consisting of family, military, NASA, corporate, and post-Senate materials); Audio-Visual Collection; and Artifacts Collection. The Senate Papers Sub-Group, documenting the twenty-four years John Glenn served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio, is open to public research. A link to the on-line finding aid for the Senate Papers Sub-Group is listed below. The Non-Senate Papers Sub-Group is open to public research. This sub-group contains records documenting John Glenn’s military, NASA, corporate, and post-senate careers. Other materials within the sub-group pertain to Glenn’s childhood and family, including the records of his wife, Anna (Annie) Castor Glenn. A link to the on-line finding aid for the Non-Senate Papers Sub-Group is listed below.
