Friedrich Wilhelm (William) Herschel (November 15, 1738 - August 25, 1822)
Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel was born in Hannover (Germany) in 1738 as son of Issak Herschel (1707-1767), a musician in the regimental band of the Foot-Guards, and Anna Ilse (b. Moritzen) himself became a musician and joined his father and his brother Jacob there. In 1759, after experiencing the 1757 battle at Hastenbeck, he and Jacob went to England. Jacob returned to Hannover after two years, but William stayed. After teaching music for some time, he became organist at Halifax in 1765, and organist and conductor at Bath in 1766. In 1772, William took home in Bath, and was joined by his sister Caroline . On May 10, 1773, at age 35, William Herschel purchased a copy of Ferguson's book, Astronomy , and found interest in astronomy. Consequently, he started to become a skilled maker of the most powerful telescopes of his time: After 1774, he had acquired skills to make specula mirrors superior to any which had been made before. Moreover, he started to observe the heavens; among his first objects, observed on the 4th of March, 1774, was the Orion Nebula On March 13, 1781 William Herschel discovered what he first thought to be a comet, but was later found to be planet Uranus. In recognition of this discovery, he was elected to the Royal Society on December 7, 1781, and awarded an annual grant by King George III of England, which enabled him to give up his carrer in music (on May 19, 1782) and concentrate on astronomy.

Herschel, John Frederick William
John Frederick William Herschel (1792 - 1871)

Herschel, John Frederick William
John Frederick William Herschel (1792 - 1871)
One of the most prominent astronomers and chemists of his time. In 1819, he discovered the possibility of solubilizing silver salts with thiosulfate, thereby creating the photographic fixer still used today. Herschel was probably the first to use the word "photography " and also coined the term "snapshot". At the beginning of 1839, only one week after he had heard of Daguerre's discovery, he developed his own process on paper and presented it to the Royal Society in London. Other processes followed, for example the cyanotype in 1842. Herschel's maps of the stars, compiled on the basis of measurements collected by his father Friedrich Wilhelm [William] (1730 - 1822), in particular the catalogue (A General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters), published in 1864, remained valid for many years.

IV.2. JOHN HERSCHEL

Sir John Herschel
"After a few moments' silent thought, Sir John diffidently inquired whether it would not be possible to effect a transfusion of artificial light through the focal object of vision! Sir David, somewhat startled at the originality of the idea, paused awhile, and then hesitatingly referred to the refrangibility of rays, and the angle of incidence. Sir John, grown more confident, adduced the example of the Newtonian Reflector, in which the refrangibility was corrected by the second speculum, and the angle of incidence restored by the third. 'And,' continued he, 'why cannot the illuminated microscope, say the hydro-oxygen, be applied to render distinct, and, if necessary, even to magnify the focal object?' Sir David sprung from his chair in an ecstacy of conviction, and leaping half-way to the ceiling, exclaimed, 'Thou art the man!'" from the New York Sun, Tuesday, August 25, 1835

English astronomer and mathematician. At the age of 24, Adams was the first person to predict the position of a planetary mass beyond Uranus . After Johann Gottfried Galle confirmed the existence of Neptune based on independent calculations done by Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier , the two became embroiled in a dispute over priority.

Royal Observatory, April 5, 1834 ON JANUARY 15, 1834 there arrived at the Cape a young English scientist and philosopher who for sheer drive, intellectual capacity and versatility has had few equals in the long history of callers at Table Bay." "John Frederick William Herschel, Bart., K.H. was born at Slough, near Windsor, on the 7th March, 1792 and died at Collingwood, Kent on the 11th May, 1871, in his eightieth year. He was the only child of Sir Frederick William Herschel and, like his father, was one of the greatest astronomers of all ages." "In 1820, assisted by his father, [John Herschel] completed a mirror of 18 inches diameter and 20 feet focal length [f/13] which became the heart of the telescope with which much of his later observing was done." "...there was an air of dilettantism about Herschel. His mind ranged over a vast number of subjects ... but when it came to physical hard work his enthusiasm would often flag ... Professor Pritchard in his biographical notice in the Encyclopaedia Britannica wrote 'Herschel had become an astronomer from a sense of duty, just as his father had become one by fascination and fixed resolve: hence it was by filial loyalty to his father's memory that he was now impelled to undertake the completion of that work which at Slough had been so grandly commended. William Herschel had explored the northern heavens; John Herschel determined to explore the heavens of the south, as well as re-explore the north.' "
