Caroline Herschel was the daughter of Isaac Herschel and Anna Ilse Moritzen. She was sister of William Herschel and the aunt of John Herschel . Caroline's father Isaac was an oboist in the Hanovarian Foot Guards and rose to become the bandmaster. Although a man with no formal education, he tried hard to give his four sons and two daughters a good education. His interests in music, philosophy and astronomy led to lively conversations in their home but Caroline's mother disapproved of learning in general and although she reluctantly accepted that her four sons should have some education, she strongly opposed her daughters doing anything other than the household chores. Caroline Herschel's four brothers were all brought up to be musicians while Caroline showed an enthusiasm for knowledge which her father tried to satisfy despite all her mother's efforts to ensure that she did nothing but household tasks. Caroline recalled that her father took her [4]:- ... on a clear frosty night into the street, to make me acquainted with several of the beautiful constellations, after we had been gazing at a comet which was then visible.

Herschel, John (Frederick William) English scientist, astronomer, and photographer who discovered thousands of close double stars, clusters, and nebulae. He coined the terms 'photography', 'negative', and 'positive', discovered sodium thiosulphite as a fixer of silver halides, and invented the cyanotype process; his inventions also include astronomical instruments.
Herschel was born in Slough, the son of William Herschel, and studied at Cambridge.
He held no academic post but devoted himself to private research. He mapped the southern skies from the Cape of Good Hope Observatory in South Africa 1834-38. During the early days of photography he gave lectures on the subject and exhibited his own images. Together with James South, he won the Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society 1826 for their catalogue of double stars published 1824.
His works include Outlines of Astronomy 1849, which became a standard textbook; General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters, still the standard reference catalogue; and General Catalogue of 10,300 Multiple and Double Stars, published posthumously.

John F. W. Herschel The son of William Herschel, the discoverer of Uranus. John Herschel studied mathematics and astronomy, made an expedition to the Cape of Good Hope in order to supplement his father's astronomical work made in the northern hemisphere. As a philosopher of sciece, his book A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy (1830) was influencial in illustrating rules of induction and hypothetico-deductive method with concrete examples from physics and related fields; for instance, young Darwin eagerly read it, and Mill's famous "Canons of Induction" are nothing but reformulations of some of Herschel's views. Further, as some historians (C. C. Gillispie in particular) have pointed out, his long review of Quetelet raised interests in probability theory among British scholars; young Maxwell presumably got inspiration from this review, as one can infer from Maxwell's famous 1860 paper on the kinetic theoy of gases as well as from Maxwell's letter (1850) to Campbell. It may be noted that Herschel suggested the frequency interpetation of probability against the Laplacian "classical" (but ambivalent) view. British astronomer who continued the work of his famous father (see Herschel, (Frederick) William ) on binary stars, star clusters, and nebulas. In 1832 he took a large telescope to the Cape of Good Hope and, for the next six years, carried out the first systematic observation of the sky in the southern hemisphere. It was during this time that the great "Moon Hoax" was perpetrated.

Note: This biography is dated June 1978 and represents John Glenn's last official NASA biography prior to his approval for his shuttle flight in 1998. His updated NASA biography is also available online. John H. Glenn, Jr., Colonel, USMC (Ret.), was born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio. As a child, he moved with his parents to New Concord, Ohio. Glenn was assigned to the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in April 1959 after his selection as a Project Mercury Astronaut. Glenn resigned from the Manned Spacecraft Center on January 16, 1964. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel in October 1964 and retired from the Marine Corps on January 1, 1965. He was business executive from 1965 until his election to the United States Senate in November 1974, where he now serves. Glenn is 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, weighs 168 pounds and has green eyes and red hair. His wife is the former Anna Margaret Castor, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H. W. Castor of New Concord. The Glenns have two children: John David, born December 13, 1945; and Carolyn Ann, born March 19, 1947. Glenn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Glenn of New Concord, are deceased. On February 20, 1962, Glenn piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 "Friendship 7" spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the United States. Launched from Cape Canaveral (recently re-named Cape Kennedy), Florida, he completed a successful threeorbit mission around the earth, reaching a maximum altitude (apogee) of approximately 16Z statute miles and an orbital velocity of approximately 17,500 miles per hour. Glenn's "Friendship 7" Mercury spacecraft landed in an area in the Atlantic approximately 800 miles southeast of Cape Kennedy in the vicinity of Grand Turk Island. He landed 41 miles west and 19 miles north of the planned impact point. The time of the flight from launch to impact was 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds. Prior to his flight, Glenn had served as backup pilot for Astronauts Shepard and Grissom.
