John Herschel (1792-1871)
John Frederick William Herschel was born on 7 March 1792 in Slough, England, the only offspring of the already famous astronomer William Herschel . Raised by his father and aunt Caroline (also an astronomer), he studied mathematics at St John's College in Cambridge, from which he graduated in 1816. He then launched into his astronomical career, focusing at first on the study of double stars. In January 1834, after five years of preparation Herschel set out with his family to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, to engage in the mammoth task of mapping and cataloguing the then largely uncharted Southern celestial hemisphere. It is during this stay at the Cape that Herschel engaged, in 1837-1838, in his pioneering measurements of the solar energy output. Upon his return to England in May 1838, Herschel became increasingly interested in the newly founded art of photography (a name coined by Herschel himself, in fact), and became a strong and vocal proponent for its use in astronomy. In 1849 he published his Outlines of Astronomy , which became a standard textbook for decades to follow. His

John Herschel was the son of William Herschel, the astronomer who discovered Uranus. His mother Mary Pitt was the daughter of a wealthy merchant. She was 38 years old when she married William Herschel, her first husband and her only child having both died. When John Herschel was born in 1792 William was 55 years old and Mary was 42. In addition to his parents, his aunt Caroline Herschel was another important figure in John Herschel's upbringing. William Herschel was not only a leading astronomer but he also had a great talent for music. Both he and his sister Caroline Herschel were extremely musical, and they had both used their musical talents to help augment their income after first arriving in England. John was brought up in Observatory House, with its 40 foot telescope, where music, science and religion were dominant. Caroline Herschel had left her brother's home when he married, but she continued to come to Observatory House every day to help William reduce his data and she proved an outstanding teacher to John, carrying out experiments in physics and chemistry with the young boy.

He took up astronomy in 1816, building a reflecting telescope with a mirror 18 inches in diameter and with a 20 foot focal length. Between 1821 and 1823 he re-examined, with James South , the double stars catalogued by his father. For this work he was presented in 1826 with the Royal Astronomical Society 's gold medal; and with the

John (Frederick William) Herschel
English scientist, astronomer, and photographer who discovered thousands of close double stars, clusters, and nebulae. He coined the terms 'photography', 'negative', and 'positive', discovered sodium thiosulphite as a fixer of silver halides, and invented the cyanotype process; his inventions also include astronomical instruments.
Herschel was born in Slough, the son of William Herschel, and studied at Cambridge.
He held no academic post but devoted himself to private research. He mapped the southern skies from the Cape of Good Hope Observatory in South Africa 1834-38. During the early days of photography he gave lectures on the subject and exhibited his own images. Together with James South, he won the Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society 1826 for their catalogue of double stars published 1824.
His works include Outlines of Astronomy 1849, which became a standard textbook; General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters, still the standard reference catalogue; and General Catalogue of 10,300 Multiple and Double Stars, published posthumously. Site Map Category Main Page About Us

HERSCHEL, Sir John Frederick William b. 7 March 1792; d. 11 May 1871 The only son of the distinguished British astronomer William Herschel, Sir John himself also became a well-known astronomer, and published an influential book on the subject. He became interested in capturing and retaining images, and in 1839 had managed to fix pictures using hyposulphite of soda. In fact it was he who had discovered twenty years previously that hypo could dissolve silver salts. Herschel, of course, had the fortune to be around just at the time both Daguerre and Fox Talbot were announcing their discoveries. He was evidently very smitten by the Daguerreotype , and conveyed the following news to Fox Talbot: "It is hardly too much to call them miraculous. Certainly they surpass anything I could have conceived as within the bounds of reasonable expectation.... Every gradation of light and shade is given with a softness and fidelity which sets all painting at an immeasurable distance.... If you have a few days at your disposition....come and see!" Fox Talbot, for his part, would not have been very happy about this news, as he was already upset that Daguerre had pipped him to the post in announcing his discovery!

Sir John Herschel was a scientist and astronomer like his father, Sir William Herschel. In 1809 he entered the University of Cambridge; in 1812 he submitted his first mathematical paper to the Royal Society, of which he was elected a fellow the following year. An accomplished chemist, Herschel discovered the action of hyposulfite of soda on otherwise insoluble silver salts in 1819, which led to the use of "hypo" as a fixing agent in photography. In 1839, independently of William Henry Fox Talbot, Herschel also invented a photographic process using sensitized paper. It was Herschel who coined the use of the terms photography positive , and negative to refer to photographic images. In 1820 Herschel became a founding member of the Royal Astronomical Society. From 1833 until 1838, his astronomical investigations brought him and his family to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, where he met Julia Margaret Cameron, who became a lifelong friend. In 1850 Herschel was appointed master of the Mint, but he resigned six years later due to poor health. His remaining years were spent working on his catalogs of double stars and of nebulae and star clusters.
