Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel
Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel, better known as Sir William Herschel, was born in Hanover, Germany on November 15, 1738. Music was an important part of his upbringing, this became evident when he became a bandboy with the Hanoverian Guards. Later on he was either inducted or a volunteer in the military where he served only briefly. Due to his delicate health he discovered he was unsuited for army life and his father helped him to leave Germany for England in 1757 where he took up residence. He was later reunited with his brother, Alexander, and his sister Caroline who joined him in England. On March 13, 1781, while scanning the skies with a 7-inch reflecting telescope, he observed an unusual object; it presented an extended disk-like shape. Herschel thought he had discovered a comet. He continued his observations, and calculations for months, discovering the orbit lay well beyond the orbit of Saturn and was fairly circular. Herschel's "Comet" was in fact a planet. Different names were suggested, including his own name, "Herschel". He, however, wanted to call the new planet "Georgium Sidus," after his new patron, George Ill. This name, however, did not find favor with the astronomical community. It was eventually named Uranus after the mythological god of the skies.

The area now occupied by the city of Bath has been known from prehistoric times for its natural hot springs. These were believed to have curative properties and were considered sacred by the ancient Celtic tribes. When the Romans conquered Britain in the first century A.D. they established an elaborate bath and spa complex at the site. Many Roman ruins remain, the most extensive in Britain. After the fall of Rome the building complex fell into disarray, although the springs continued to attract people seeking cures for various physical ailments throughout the Middle Ages. At the end of the eighteenth century, the springs were "discovered" by the English upper class, and a handsome city designed around the then current ideas of neo-classical (or Georgian ) architecture came into being. Lucretia Caroline Herschel (1750 – 1848):

After the French occupation of Hanover in 1757, William escaped to England, where he became a music teacher. In 1766 William became an organist in Bath and, in 1772, Caroline joined him there. After arriving in Bath, Caroline trained as a singer giving successful performances. In 1787 the Herschels moved to Old Windsor and King George III gave Caroline a 50 per year salary as assistant to William. William had been appointed astronomer to the King George III five years earlier. In 1788 the Herschels moved to Slough. Every night William observed and Caroline recorded his observations. By day Caroline would work on the results obtained by night. She carried out the lengthy calculations necessary to reduce William's data. In 1798 Caroline submitted to the Royal Society an Index to Flamsteed's observations together with a list of 560 stars which had been omitted.

History Today
March, 2000 by Margaret Millar Ian Millar
March 16th, 1750 Prospects seemed dreary for young Caroline Herschel, born in Hanover 250 years ago this month, when her father said that, since she lacked either beauty or wealth, she could forget marriage. Apparently all that remained for her was a life of dull drudgery as an unpaid housekeeper in Hanover. But escape came when she was twenty-two, thanks to her elder brother William, who had deserted from the Hanoverian army and set up home in England (then sharing the same royal family) and was now a musician in fashionable Bath. Happier here, though still housekeeping, Caroline began training as a singer, and she also found herself drawn to William's new enthusiasm: amateur astronomy. At first she helped her brother with casting, grinding and polishing the reflecting mirrors for his ever bigger and better telescopes. Caroline recorded his observations and calculated star positions for him. Then nine years later, William made his biggest discovery: a new planet, the seventh member of the family (including Earth) moving around the Sun. Astutely, William named the new planet Georgium Sidus after George III, but Uranus was more popular and is the name that has remained.

The Comets Of Caroline Herschel - Greg Bryant
The Herschel family is well known in the history of astronomy. Their observations around the turn of the 19th century resulted in the cataloging of thousands of deep sky objects, as well as the discovery of Saturn's moon Enceladus. Caroline Herschel, who assisted her brother William in many of his observations, was quite an achiever in her own right, making the original discoveries of many of the clusters and nebulae in the Herschel catalog. Many deep sky observers may not realise, however, that Caroline also discovered eight comets, six of which bear her name. Comet C/1786 P1 (Herschel) Herschel's first comet discovery came on the night of 1st August, 1786. She found the comet at a magnitude of about 7.5, though poor sky conditions meant that confirmation of the cometary nature of the suspected intruder had to wait until the following night. The first reported naked-eye sighting of Comet Herschel occurred on 17th August, and Charles Messier observed a tail 1.5 degrees long through his telescope the following night. On the next night, 19th August, Caroline's brother, William Herschel, described the comet as being "considerably brighter" than the globular cluster M3, indicating a brightness of between 5th and 6th magnitude. Observations continued through to 26th October. Calculations show that the comet had earlier reached perihelion on 8th July at a distance of only 0.41 AU.

    Herschel, Karoline (1750-1848)
Karoline Lucretia Herschel was born in Hannover on March 16th, 1750 to her father Isaak Herschel and her mother Anna Ilse Moritzen. Her father Isaak was a military musician, he and his wife had ten children, four died very young. The other five, beside Karoline, were Sophia Elisabeth, born April, 12th 1733; Heinrich Anton Jakob, born November 20st 1734; Friedrich Wilhelm , November, 15th 1738; Johann Alexander, November 13th 1745; and Johann Dietrich, September 13th 1755. During her youth Karoline had to help her mother with the daily work in the house. The thought to have no other duties than to wash, bleach and iron the tablecloth worried her. She was happy when her brother Wilhelm asked her to come to England for an education as a singer. In the summer of 1772 Wilhelm came to Hannover to help his sister with the travel to Bath. She would see Hannover again fifty years later. In Bath Wilhelm started to train her as a singer but also teached Karoline in the English language and in mathematics. During breaks and in the evening they talked about the stars. In 1777 she got an invitation to a music festival in Birmingham, but she declined since she would only sing with her brother as conductor. In Bath she most likely sang in the 'Pump Room' and the privately owned Octagon church. These buildings still exists, the latter today (1994) used as a showroom of the Royal Photographic Society. In 1777 she started to help in the workshop with the grinding of metal mirrors. In the years to come she assisted her brother at the telescope, writing down the observational notes he made while standing at the eyepiece of his telescope. Later, beginning in 1782, she got the annual sum of 50 pounds from King Georg III. for her work assisting her brother, now astronomer at court in Windsor. Leaving Bath for the new place in Datchet near Windsor meant the end of her musical career, but she was happy helping her brother and sharing his astronomical work.
