Tycho's star maps William and Caroline Herschel During the 18th century, the role of the Royal Observatory was to produce tables to aid navigation. The work was routine and practical. Astronomical discoveries were left to amateurs such as the Herschels. William Herschel was originally a musician from Hanover but became interested in astronomy in 1773. In 1781 he spotted what he thought might be a comet using a 7ft telescope of the same design as that on display here. He immediately wrote to Nevil Maskelyne, then Astronomer Royal. The comet turned out to be the planet Uranus. Caroline Herschel was rescued by William from a life of domestic servitude under her mother in Hanover. He brought her back with him to England as a singer and his housekeeper. Caroline followed her brother into astronomy, wrote up his results and herself discovered comets and nebulae. William Herschel was not only an amateur astronomer, he was also an instrument maker. In 1785 King George III gave William a grant of £2,000 to build a 40ft reflector telescope for William's own use (the remains of which are now on display at the Observatory, outside the South Building). William also sold instruments to the Royal Observatory and to amateur astronomers.

The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. W illiam and Caroline Herschel were brother and sister, born in 1738 and 1750 in Hanover. Both were trained as musicians, and William moved to England when he was 19 to find work as an organist. Caroline's father assured her that she was was not pretty enough to marry, and her mother discouraged her bookishness. Her brother rescued her from all that in 1772 and brought her to England, where he'd become a well-established musician. William turned her loose to study, and study she did. She learned English, more music, mathematics and accounting, and together they studied astronomy. William also forced her to learn the artifices of English society. She complained that English flower shows were: a subject on which the wondrous female mind ... for months before and after, is absorbed in ecstatic contemplation.

Both enjoyed watching the skies and, in 1781, William discovered the planet Uranus. He named it briefly 'Georgium Sidus' in honour of the British King. The discovery of the new planet inspired Herschel to end his career as a musician and teacher and concentrate on astronomy. King George appointed William his private astronomer, and the Herschels moved to Slough, near Windsor, England.

His first job in England was hand-copying music. He then moved around England, becoming a band instructor, private music teacher, performer, composer, and church organist. He finally settled in Bath. Change in focus Astronomy in earnest In 1773, Herschel bought books and equipment to begin astronomy in earnest. He hired a reflecting telescope, and purchased a quadrant to measure angles between stars and planets. He soon realized that this telescope was not powerful enough. Unable to afford a bigger telescope, he decided to make his own. Herschel cast his own metal telescope mirrors and then spent endless hours grinding and polishing them. By the end of 1774, he was using a telescope which he had built himself, three times as large as his first one. see sidenote below ) Herschel went on to construct over 400 telescopes, the biggest of which had a focal length of 12 metres (40 feet) and a mirror 122 cm (48 inches) in diameter. The magnification of the eyepiece, 6,450 times, was greater than any in existence. This remained the largest telescope in the world for over 50 years.

Er ermutigte alle seine sechs Kinder Mathematik, Französisch und Musik zu erlernen. Carolines Mutter sah keine Notwendigkeit in einer guten Ausbildung für ein Mädchen. Daher zog sie es vor, Caroline zu einer Haushälterin für den Rest der Familie zu machen. Mit zehn Jahren erkrankte Caroline an Thyphus. Die Krankheit verhinderte ihr Wachstum. Ihre Eltern nahmen an, dass Caroline ihr Leben lang eine "alte Jungfrau" bleiben würde. Caroline blieb bei ihren Eltern, bis ihr Bruder Wilhelm im Alter von 22 Jahren sie mit nach Bath in England nahm. Dort führte Caroline den Haushalt ihres Bruders. Wilhelm war ein guter Musiker und Lehrer. Er gab Caroline Gesangsunterricht und unterrichtete sie auch in Mathematik.
