HERSCHEL; Caroline L.; 1750-1848; HOL/GBR After a childhood similar to a typical women's childhood of this period, she left without regret the houseworks of Holland to join her brother William in the UK in 1772. A common image describes Caroline, lightened by a candle, writing down the observations that her brother cried out from outside the house standing at his telescopes (Georges III gave her a 50 pounds grant per year for the help she provided). Unsatisfied with only assisting her brother, she observed herself from 1782 and discovered 8 comets, observed about 100 deep sky objects and discovered 14 new nebulae.

HERSCHEL, CAROLINE LUCRETIA
Astronomer (1750-1848) She was the sister of William Herschel, also an astronomer. They were both self-educated scientists who lived in Bath, England. William discovered the planet Uranus. Caroline helped him throughout his life to develop the modern mathematical approach to astronomy. After William's death she continued the work to complete the great astronomical catalogs that are now the standards. Since women could not be regular members of the Royal Astronomical Society she was awarded an honorary membership. Return to Homepage

"I have looked further into space than any human being did before me" - William Herschel The William Herschel Museum is dedicated to the many achievements of the Herschels, who were distinguished astronomers as well as talented musicians. It was from this house, using a telescope of his own design that William discovered the planet Uranus in 1781. His observations helped to double the known size of the solar system. Following a tradition of the great astronomers of the renaissance he pushed forward the science of building telescopes. He was rewarded for his work by King George III, and also received the Copley Medal. Caroline also made a huge contribution to the field of astronomy. The work of the Herschels clearly had an impact on modern science and space exploration. To quote from the patron of the museum Patrick Moore, "William Herschel was the first man to give a reasonably correct picture of the shape of our star-system or galaxy; he was the best telescope-maker of his time, and possibly the greatest observer who ever lived".

Caroline Lucretia Herschel (March 16, 1750 - January 9, 1848)
Caroline Herschel was born on March 16, 1750 in Hannover, Germany, as the younger sister of William Herschel . She served in the home of her parents until 1772, when her brother William took her to England. First a housekeeper and singer for the organist William, she became his general assistent, and engaged in astronomy together with William. Most of her astronomical work was helping William by writing down his observations, but besides that work, Caroline was observing on her own, notably with a 27-inch focal length Newtonian 'sweeper.' She discovered a number of deepsky objects in the time of 1783-87, notably an independent discovery of M110 (NGC 205) , the second companion of the Andromeda Galaxy. According to G. Buttmann (1961) , p. 64, Caroline stated to have observed 14 objects until the end of 1783 alone, but the present author is only aware of a total of 13 (of which only 10 or 11 were known at that time). Between 1786 and 1797, she discovered a total of eight comets. .. more to come soon ..

Caroline Lucretia Herschel Caroline was born in Hannover, Germany on 1750 March 16, and was ultimately one of 10 children. At the age of 10 she was struck with typhus, which subsequently stunted her growth. She never grew taller than 4' 3" and remained frail throughout her life. Her father once told her she would never marry because of her looks and because she was not rich. In addition, primarily because of the times, her mother resisted giving her an education, saying that it was Caroline's duty to take care of her brothers. Despite all of this, Caroline's father secretly educated her and she ultimately displayed musical talent, as well as a gift for mathematics.
Music was an important part of life for the Herschel family. Caroline's father was a military musician and her older brothers, William and Alexander, as well as Caroline, showed exceptional talent.
Shortly after the beginning of the Seven Years' War, Hannover slipped into the hands of the French in 1757. Caroline was then 7 years of age and her 19-year-old brother William escaped to England where he became a music teacher. Sometime later he was joined by Alexander and they frequently performed as musicians.
William moved to Bath, England in 1766 and became organist and choir master at the Octagon Chapel. In 1772, he asked Caroline to come to Bath and she subsequently trained as a singer. Despite her fraility, she was a soprano and gave many successful performances, among which were solo parts in the Messiah and Judas Maccabeus.

Caroline Herschel was the first woman to discover a comet.
She came from a working class family in Hanover. When she was twenty her brother William asked her to come Bath, because he liked her and he needed a housekeeper. William was a fine musician and conductor and he earned his living as a chorus director. Thanks to her sister lessons she attracted attention as a soprano in Bath.
William spent a lot of time on his hobby, astronomy. He became well known as a telescope maker and with the support of King George III he was able to give up music and concentrate on telescopes and astronomy.
When Caroline was 32 she had outgrown her housekeeping duties and started helping William with his work. She started looking for comets on her own and she also calculated the positions of objects by her brother and herself. In 1783 she discovered three nebulae.
William's reputation grew after he discovered the planet Uranus. He was appointed court astronomer and Caroline became a professional astronomer as well: she received 50 pounds annually for her work. While William was on leave to Germany Caroline discovered a comet herself. They wrked together for several years, but after her brother married he spent most of his time differently. Caroline regretted this, but carried on at the observatory. She discovered several other comets. After William died in 1822 she gave up astronomy and returned to Hanover.

Women of Hanover: Caroline Herschel
born March 16, 1750 in Hannover died January 9, 1848 in Hannover German astronomer Caroline Lucretia Herschel was the first woman to receive full recognition in the field of astronomy. She grew up in Hanover, the only girl among five surviving children of the military musician Isaak Herschel and his wife Anna Ilse Herschel. Against the wishes of her mother, who would have preferred her to be a seamstress, Caroline, like her brothers, received musical training and became a concert singer. When she was 22 she followed her brother Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel (her elder by twelve years) to England, where he was an organist and conductor in the elegant city of Bath. He needed her as his housekeeper, but also gave her the opportunity to appear as a soloist in his concerts. Soon she had gained the position of first singer, assumed a managerial role in the chorus and received offers to perform in other cities. She would surely have had a great musical career had she not followed her brother's passion for astronomy. Without doubt this was an unusual family, these Herschels from Hanover, among whom great gifts, even double talents (music and astronomy) were apparently the rule: Alexander, also a musician, served as well as an astronomer in brother Wilhelm's family business of studying the skies.

Herschel, Caroline Lucretia Caroline Lucretia Herschel was born in Hannover, Germany, on March 16, 1750. Her father died when she was 17, so she went to Bath to live with and take care of her brother, William. When William would conduct choirs or bands, Caroline would be singing in the choir. When William was studying Algebra and Geometry, Caroline would be learning Algebra and Geometry at his side. Caroline and William shared a very close relationship. Another one of William's odd jobs was the making of telescopes, some that he would use to observe celestial bodies. It was during this period that Caroline began to take an interest in astronomy. Then, in 1781, William discovered the planet now known as Uranus, and in 1785, they moved to Windsor. There, Caroline was given a telescope by her brother, and she spent hours on end searching the skies for flying comets. In 1786, Caroline and William moved to the "Observatory House", the place where Caroline spotted her first comet, sometimes called "first lady's comet." Also in this year, William got married, and this dramatically changed Caroline's lifestyle, although she never wavered from astronomy.
