Hermite, Charles (18221901) Hermite was born in an area claimed by both France and Germany, although Hermite considered himself French. He attended the Collège Henri IV, Collège Louis-le-Grand, and École polytechnique After graduation he became a teacher and examiner at the École. His students included Picard , Borel, and Poincaré . He was an excellent teacher and a prolific text-writer. Hermite was one of the founders of analytic number theory which uses calculus to investigate properties of numbers. H e is best known for the transcendence of e Numbers that are solutions of polynomial equations with rational coefficients are called algebraic: -2 is algebraic because it satisfies the equation x + 2 = 0, and Rad(3) is algebraic because it satisfies the equation x^2 - 3 = 0. Numbers that are not algebraic are called transcendental, a term coined by Euler to describe numbers like e and pi , that appear to “transcend the power of algebraic methods.” But it was not until a hundred years after Euler’s death that Hermite proved the transcendence of e A few years later C.L.F. Lindemann

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio
