Recipient of the Academy's First Tanning Prize to Be Announced
On Thursday, September 29, the Academy of American Poets will observe its 60th anniversary with a special reading at the Library of Congress. The program and reception to follow, co- sponsored by the Library's Gertrude Clarke Whittall Poetry and Literature Fund and the Academy, will feature readings by Academy Chancellors John Ashbery, Amy Clampitt, Anthony Hecht, Daniel Hoffman, John Hollander, Richard Howard, Stanley Kunitz, William Meredith, W. S. Merwin, David Wagoner, and Richard Wilbur. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry Rita Dove will introduce the program, which will be in the Montpelier Room at 8 p.m. Tickets are not required. The Academy of American Poets was founded in 1934 to support American poets during all stages of their careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry. The largest organization in the country dedicated specifically to the art of poetry, the Academy sponsors programs nationally. These include an annual fellowship for distinguished poetic achievement; the Tanning Prize; four major book awards; poetry prizes at 150 colleges and universities; the Atlas Fund, which provides assistance to non-commercial publishers of poetry; and a popular series of public readings and symposia that began in New York City in 1963 and is now presented in several cities across the country.

http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/g_l/hecht/light.htm
On "More Light! More Light!" Daniel Hoffman t times Hecht’s dramatic lyrics armored in biblical allusions remind one of the diction and vehemence of [Robert] Lowell ("These yes, which many have praised as gay, / Are the stale jellies of lust in which Adam sinned"). But in poems that dramatize the hard hours of his generation’s history, Hecht speaks with a tragic irony that is his own unmistakeable voice. "More Light! More Light! plays out against the implications of Goethe’s dying cry two episodes from history: the burning at the stake of an accused heretic in the Middle Ages, and this: [Hoffman quotes the two stanzas before the last.] In the absence of the light of either Goethe’s humanism or the Word, the Pole’s refusal may suggest that he, like their Nazi captor, is too scornful of Jews to kill them himself. As for them, "Much casual death had drained their souls away," and they obey the order to bury the Pole. But then the Nazi makes them dig him out and get back in. The gravity of Hecht’s quatrains molds this fable of "casual death" as unassuageable, without transcendence. From Daniel Hoffman, "Our Common Lot," in Daniel Hoffman, ed.

Michael Gannon
About the Author
Daniel Hecht was a professional guitarist for twenty years. In 1989, he retired from musical performance to take up writing, and he received his MFA from the Iowa Writers Workshop in 1992. He is the author of two previous novels, Skull Session and The Babel Effect . Book Description Introducing Cree Black, a parapsychologist with a haunted past. The 150-year-old Beauforte House, located in the Garden District in New Orleans, has some secrets. When Lila Beauforte takes up residence in her ancestral home as an adult she begins to see some of those secrets literally come to life. Terrified by an insidious and ultimately violent presence, Lila is losing her characteristic tenacity. Fearing for his sister's sanity, Ronald Beauforte reluctantly calls Cree Black for help. Based out of Seattle, Cree Black and her partner take on the world beyond our senses. Detectives of the spirit, the so-called ghostbusters are able to conjure ghosts with the hope of exorcising them out of people's lives. A natural empath with a Ph.D. in psychology, Cree is susceptible to the emotional vulnerability of her clients. As she gets closer to the truth, the proverbial bones in the closet of the prestigious New Orleans family come crashing down around them, and Cree must fight to keep her own ghosts from destroying her.

Jay Wright Receives 62nd Academy Fellowship
"Over the past quarter-century, Jay Wright 's books have appeared like summer lightning: sudden, unexpected, brilliant in the surrounding dark. . . . [H]is poems are miracles of visionary energy, moralized lyricism, and a buoyant, complex mythmaking. Like Whitman's, they range through histories and culture, intent on the solitary soul. Like any miracle, they are challenging to encounter, impossible to forget. The selection of Jay Wright as this year's Academy Fellow does honor to a prestigious prize." J.D. McClatchy New York, September 1996Jonathan Galassi, President of The Academy of American Poets, announced that the Chancellors of the Academy have named Jay Wright the recipient of the 62nd Fellowship of The Academy of American Poets for distinguished poetic achievement. The Academy's Fellowship carries a prize of $20,000. Jay Wright was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1935. He is the author of eight volumes of poetry including

J.D. McClatchy and Mark Strand Elected to The Academy of American Poets Board Of Chancellors
New York, February 1996 Jonathan Galassi, President of The Academy of American Poets, announced that the Chancellors of the Academy have elected poets J.D. McClatchy and Mark Strand to join their Board. Mr. Strand succeeds Richard Wilbur, who was elected Chancellor in 1961, and Mr. McClatchy succeeds Stanley Kunitz, elected in 1970. The Board of Chancellors, comprised of twelve eminent American poets, names the winner of the Academy's annual $20,000 Fellowship and advises the Academy in literary matters. The other ten members of the Board are John Ashbery, Anthony Hecht, Daniel Hoffman, John Hollander, Richard Howard, Carolyn Kizer, Maxine Kumin, W.S. Merwin, Mona Van Duyn, and David Wagoner. At a recent meeting of the Directors and Chancellors of The Academy of American Poets, it was decided that Chancellors of the Academy would be limited to two consecutive terms of twelve years each. It was also decided that this new stipulation would be made retroactive. Consequently elections were held in December and January to choose the successors to Mr. Wilbur and Mr. Kunitz. Mr. Wilbur and Mr. Kunitz will assume the title of Chancellor Emeritus (joining the poet William Meredith), and as such will continue to be active as advisors to the Academy.
