Stephen Hawking on black holes, unified field theory, and Marilyn Monroe.
By Gregory Benford
Stephen Hawking seemed slightly worse, as always. It is a miracle that he has clung to life for over 20 years with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Each time I see him I feel that this will be the last, that he cannot hold on to such a thin thread for much longer. Hawking turned 60 in January. Over the course of his brilliant career, he has worked out many of the basics of black hole physics, including, most strikingly, his prediction that black holes aren’t entirely black. Instead, if they have masses equivalent to a mountain’s, they radiate particles of all kinds. Smaller holes would disappear in a fizz of radiation a signature that astronomers have searched for but so far not found. The enormous success of Hawking’s 1988 book, A Brief History of Time , has made him a curious kind of cultural icon. He wonders how many of the starlets and rock stars who mentioned the book on talk shows actually read it. With his latest book

CAMBRIDGE, England (AP) Famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking said Friday that allegations he was abused are "completely false," but his ex-wife urged police to investigate reports that he suffered a series of unexplained injuries. An inquiry was triggered by nursing staff who contacted police in the summer after Hawking who is paralyzed and uses a wheelchair was left stranded in his garden on the hottest day of the year and suffered severe heatstroke and sunburn. "I firmly and wholeheartedly reject the allegations that I have been assaulted," Hawking said in a statement issued Friday through Cambridge University. "The stories in the media are completely false, and I am profoundly disappointed by the circulation of such personal and inaccurate information," said Hawking, who is hospitalized in Cambridge with pneumonia. Police say they plan to interview Hawking when he recovers.

Stephen Hawking's ex-wife writes tell-all
Jane Hawking chronicles the misery of her marriage
By Craig Offman
www.salon.com
August 12, 1999
Web posted at: 3:08 p.m. EDT (1908 GMT) (SALON) In 1990, world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking did what looked like a bad, bad thing. The author of "A Brief History of Time," who suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, dropped his wife of almost 30 years and took off with a younger woman his nurse, Elaine Mason. But as is revealed in Jane Hawking's new tell-all, "Music to Move the Stars," their marriage was much more complicated than anybody knew. Published in Britain by Macmillan, the 610-page tome of woe hits the shelves on Friday. In it, Jane Hawking chronicles the hardships of marriage to a famous genius with a famous degenerative disease. She is startlingly frank about her feelings, calling her ex-husband an "all-powerful emperor" and a "masterly puppeteer." She notes at one point, "It was becoming very difficult unnatural, even to feel desire for someone with the body of a Holocaust victim and the undeniable needs of an infant." Desperate for emotional and physical fulfillment, she says, in 1985 she began an affair with a family friend, musician Jonathan Hellyer-Jones, whom she had met in 1977 after joining a local choir. Her husband gave tacit sanction to the relationship; the pair married in 1996.

http://www.heise.de/tp/deutsch/inhalt/buch/7735/1.html
Wagner also hätte Einsteins Raumzeit antizipieren können? Wer Wagner erfahren will, muss erst an René Descartes leiden.

Stephen Hawking is no ordinary scientist. With a career that began over thirty years ago at Cambridge University, he has managed to do more than perhaps any other scientist to broaden our basic understanding of the universe. His theoretical work on black holes and his progress in advancing our knowledge of the origin and nature of the cosmos have been groundbreaking—if not downright revolutionary.

    Hawking, Stephen William
English physicist whose work in general relativity - particularly gravitational field theory - led to a search for a quantum theory of gravity to explain black holes and the Big Bang, singularities that classical relativity theory does not adequately explain.
Hawking's objective of producing an overall synthesis of quantum mechanics and relativity theory began around the time of the publication of his seminal book The Large Scale Stucture of Space-Time, written with G. F. R. Ellis, 1973. His most remarkable result, published in 1974, was that black holes could in fact emit particles in the form of thermal radiation - the so-called Hawking radiation.
Hawking was born in Oxford, studied at Oxford and Cambridge, and became Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge 1979.
Hawking's most fruitful work was with black holes, stars that have undergone total gravitational collapse and whose gravity is so great that nothing, not even light, can escape from them. Since 1974, he has studied the behaviour of matter in the immediate vicinity of a black hole, concluding that black holes do, contrary to expectation, emit radiation. He has proposed a physical explanation for this 'Hawking radiation' which relies on the quantum-mechanical concept of 'virtual particles' - these exist as particle-antiparticle pairs and are supposed to fill 'empty' space. Hawking suggested that, when such a particle is created near a black hole, one half of the pair might disappear into the black hole, leaving the other half, which could escape to infinity. This would be seen by a distant observer as thermal radiation.
