John Clarke Slater Papers American Philosophical Society English John Clarke Slater Papers B S12p 81 linear feet American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 After receiving his doctorate from Harvard in 1923, the physicist John Clarke Slater did postgraduate work at Cambridge University and on the continent working n quantum theory with both Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg. Slater was appointed to the head of the department of physics at MIT in 1930, which he and Karl Compton worked effectively to transform into one of international stature. His own work on the electromagnetic theory of microwaves was fundamental to the development of radar systems. During the Second World War, he was affiliated with the radiation laboratory and after he helped found the solid state and molecular theory group, the interdisciplinary Center for Materials Science and Engineering, the Research Laboratory of Electronics, and the Laboratory for Nuclear Science. After his retirement from MIT in 1966, Slater moved to the University of Florida, remaining active until his death in 1976.

Very good. First edition., Hartree (1897-1958) was a Cambridge-educated physicist and mathematician. He was one of the designers of the Manchester Meccano differential analyzer. He wrote the first technical description of the ENIAC and worked on early computers at Cambridge. "Hartree's chief contribution to science was his development of powerful methods of numerical mathematical analysis, which made it possible for him to apply successfully the so-called self-consistent field method to the calculation of atomic wave functions of polyelectronic atoms, that is, those which in the neutral condition have more than one electron surrounding the nucleus. These calculations involved the numerical solution of the partial differential equations of quantum mechanics for many-body systems subject to the usual boundary conditions" (DSB). NAHC/HAR. DOUGLAS R. HARTREE Professor Douglas R. Hartree (1897-1958) was one of the most influential mathematicians and computer pioneers of his day, whose work bridged both the calculating machine and electronic digital eras. As Beyer Professor of Applied Mathematics at Manchester University in the mid 1930s, Hartree built a differential analyzer based upon the machine of the American, Vannevar Bush. Hartree's international reputation ensured that he kept in close touch with American developments, and during the Second World War he became involved with the ENIAC project. On his return to England (where he had accepted a chair at Cambridge University) Hartree publicised American activities and was an enthusiastic supporter of British efforts to build stored program computers. References : M.V. Wilkes' introduction to Hartree, Calculating Machines etc. (Cambridge, Mass.; MIT Press, 1984). A small number of Hartree papers are deposited in the Archives of Churchill College, Cambridge. See listing by Contemporary Scientific Archives Centre (CSAC 45/9/76). Copy in NAHC.
