Unique indian art gifts shipped fromCalifornia Artists and Authors Chandra Bal Master Chandra Bal taught Harish Johari the wash painting technique, which Harish later developed into his own Harish Johari Wash Painting Tradition In this sense master Chandra Bal lies at the basis of the technique used in most paintings shown on the Sanatan Society websites. He learned the wash painting technique from Shri Bhawani Prasad Mittal, who learned it at Shanti Niketan. Together with Harish, Chandra Bal personally taught many of the artists presented on this website, such as Pieter Weltevrede Sandeep Johari Suresh Johari Sapna Johari , among many others. For most of his life, he taught painting in his own private school in Bareilly - India. The school is still being run by his son Prabhat Bal, who himself is also a very gifted artist of whom we will show work on this website soon. Master Chandra Bal left his body on the 15th of June 2002. This very short introduction awaits the creation of a much longer biography. We hope to add more paintings of the master to this website soon, but already here are a few :

RAJA HARISHCHANDRA None of his many friends were willing to advance him the money required for his venture. In fact, many of them thought that the venture was a foolhardy one and hence doomed for failure. Some even thought of having him committed to an asylum. The only exception was Yeshwant Nadkarni, a long-standing friend who was convinced of his sincerity and honesty. However, even he needed proof that Dadasaheb could produce a story-film. Hence, it was not enough for Dadasaheb to produce a "topical" short. He had to make a short film centred around a theme if he had to prove his worth. Phalke planted a pea in an earthenware pot and began to record its growth one frame at a time with his simple five-pound movie camera, imported from London. It took him a full 45 days to shoot the 200-foot film which ran for a bare two minutes. A show of the film was held at an electrical shop in Kalbadevi for an amazed audience which saw the pea grow into a plant within a matter of minutes. Among those in the audience was Yeshwant Nadkarni who immediately agreed to finance Phalke's venture. Variously recorded in film history as The Growth Of Pea Plant and From Peanut to Plant, this short film was the first to use time lapse techniques in India. Thus, even if by accident rather than design, Phalke had made the first Indian documentary in the true sense of the word.

RAJA HARISHCHANDRA - THE STORY There were other problems, the principal one being the dearth of artistes willing to work in films because of the stigma attached to the profession. Phalke took out a series of advertisements in Induprakash, a well-circulated Marathi newspaper of that time, welcoming auditions from "handsome faces". Only third-rate stage artistes applied. Finding women artistes was an even tougher job. Phalke even scoured red-light areas for suitable women artistes but did not meet with much success. Eventually he had to be satisfied with casting the slightly built Salunke as Taramati. D.D. Dabke was cast as Harishchandra while Phalke's own son Bhalchandra played Rohidas. The actual production problems were even more complex. Shooting for Raja Harishchandra began soon after the monsoon of 1912 at the bungalow owned by Mathurdas Monji Waiji on Dadar Main Road, Phalke had to do everything: teach acting to the artistes, write the scenario, design and erect the set, direct the film and do the filming. That apart he had to work round the clock: shoot during the day and perforate the negative, develop the exposed film, print and edit it during the night. There was no alternative because no one really knew anything about making feature films. Six months later, an edited 3700 feet of Raja Harishchandra was ready. Canny as usual, Phalke wrote the subtitles of the film in Hindi and English so as to reach the widest possible audience. Phalke's dream of producing a story-film like The Life Of Christ had come true. He arranged a preview of the film on April 21, 1913 at the Olympia cinema in Bombay (or the elite of the city. The film was commercially released on May 3, 1913 at the Coronation cinema.

While an employee of the Military Auditor-General's office, Harish Chandra studied law. In 1852 he became a member of the british indian association (est1851), a society of Bengal landholders. Subsequently, Harischandra Mukherjee became the owner of the Hindu Patriot. He had great influence on contemporary political thought. Harish Chandra was in favour of widow remarriage. He strongly opposed dalhousie 's (1848-56) annexation policy, but during the sepoy revolt (1857) supported the British. During the indigo resistance movement in 1859-60, he championed the cause of the indigo raiyats and used his pen to expose the indigo planters' atrocities. He died when he was only 38. Harish Chandra Mitra's father Abhay Charan Mitra was an inhabitant of Hawra, West Bengal. Harish Chandra Mitra was brought up in dire poverty. While a teenager he worked as a compositor at a press. His first poem was published in 1858 in the Sambad Probhakar . In his youth he was a teacher at a junior school in Dhaka. In 1860, Harish Chandra published a monthly- Kavita Kushumabali , the first newspaper from Dhaka. In 1862, he edited another monthly Abakashranjika . In 1863, he published weekly Dhaka Darpan , the first weekly published from Dhaka. Among other newspapers he edited were Kabya Prokash Hindu Hitoishi (1865), and Hindu Ranjika Harish Chandra Mitra published and edited monthly Mitra Prokash (1870), which is thought to be one of the best periodicals published from Dhaka in the 19th century. When Rohit came to know that his father wanted to sacrifice him for Yagya, then he went to forest with his bow and arrow. After a few days he came to know that Varun Devtaa was angry and he had made his father ill, so he started towards his city. Then Indra came and stopped him and said - "It is better to roam around Teerth instead of being a sacrifice animal." On the advice of Indra he stayed in the forest for one year more. Then every year Indra came in the form of an old Braahman to stop him going towards his city and he did not go there for six years.
