THE HEART OF THE CITY
WILLIAM BRUCE

17 1/2 King Street East
(pre-1890 address 14 1/2 King Street East) William Bruce was an important character in the early days of Hamilton. He opened a patent office at 17 ½ King Street East in 1867, but he was known for much more than that. Throughout his lifetime, which spanned almost a century, William Bruce helped Hamilton develop into what it is today. After ten years at the grammar school, Bruce began working in a foundry. In 1850, he was apprenticed to a foundry owned by John Fisher and Calvin McQuesten for two dollars a week. In his spare time at work, William would visit other areas of the foundry. He was anxious to learn as much as he could. As was the case in everything Bruce did, he excelled at the factory. His work was shown to journeymen and they were asked why their work was not as good as an apprentice's. At night, William studied the art of penmanship. It was for his beautiful handwriting that William became best known. Bruce was forced to give up his job at the foundry due to a rheumatic condition. In 1854, he went to Oberlin College in Ohio. He took a course in Classics and went to business college. At the same time, he learned to play violin in the conservatory of music. He also worked very hard to support himself during college. He was not ashamed to help farmers during the harvest for ten cents an hour.

Significant Scots
William Hamilton Mr Hamilton was twice married, into families of distinction, and by his first lady, a daughter of Sir James Hall of Dunglass, baronet, he had issue one son, James, who succeeded him. Though Mr Hamilton’s works do not place him among the highest class of Scottish poets, he is fully entitled to rank among those of a secondary order. What was much in his favour, certainly not in furtherance of his facility of composition, but as an advantage to his fame, is, that for a whole century previous to the time he began to write, few names of any consequence were known in Scottish poetry. From 1615 till 1715 no poet of any note—except only Drummond and Stirling—had appeared. ‘The Braes of Yarrow,’ one of the finest ballads ever written, may put in a claim to superior distinction. But even with this exception, I should think our poet more remarkable for engaging tenderness than for deep and affecting pathos. In like manner, when he expresses the joyful sentiments, or describes scenes and objects of festivity, which he does very often, he displays good humour and easy cheerfulness, rather than the transports of mirth or the brilliancy of wit." Mr Richardson, in illustration of these characteristics, quotes some passages which convey the most favourable impression of Mr Hamilton’s poetical powers.

William Rowan Hamilton
William Rowan Hamilton Sir William Rowan Hamilton August 4 September 2 ) was an Irish mathematician physicist , and astronomer. Hamilton's discovery of quaternion s is his best known investigation. Hamilton also contributed to the development of optics dynamics , and algebra . Hamilton's research was later significant for the development of quantum mechanics Dr John Brinkley , bishop of Cloyne, is said to have remarked in of Hamilton at the age of eighteen This young man, I do not say will be, but is, the first mathematician of his age William Rowan Hamilton's mathematical included the study of geometrical optics, adaptation of dynamic methods in optical systems, applying quaternion and vector methods to problems in mechanics and in geometry, development of theories of conjugate algebraic couple functions (in which complex numbers are constructed as ordered pairs of real numbers), solvability of polynomial equations and general quintic polynomial solvable by radicals, the analysis on Fluctuating Functions (and the ideas from Fourier analysis), linear operators on quaternions and proving a result for linear operators on the space of quaternions (which is a special case of the general theorem which today is known as the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem ). William Hamilton. A Scene from "Twelfth Night," c. 1797. Oil on canvas, approximately 13.5 x 17 inches. The Yale Center for British Art, New Haven. In Act V, Scene i, Olivia has married Sebastian, the twin bother of Viola, who is disguised as a young man, Cesario. When Olivia confronts Cesario, whom she thinks she has married, confusion reigns. When Viola/Cesario denies any knowledge of the marriage, Olivia summons the priest who has just performed the ceremony and asks: Father, I charge thee, by thy reverence,
Here to unfold, though lately we intended
To keep in darkness what occasion now
Reveals before 'tis ripe, what thou dost know
Hath newly pass'd between this youth and me. The priest answers that he has indeed married Olivia and a young man: A contract of eternal bond of love,
Confirm'd by mutual joinder of your hands,
Attested by the holy close of lips,
Strengthen'd by interchangement of your rings;
And all the ceremony of this compact
Seal'd in my function, by my testimony:
Since when, my watch hath told me, toward my grave I have travell'd but two hours.
