Christine Hamill 's father was Philip Hamill who was a medical doctor and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Christine studied first at St Paul's Girls' School where she won a foundation scholarship, then at Perse School for Girls. She was awarded a Caroline Turle scholarship to study at Newnham College, Cambridge in 1942. At Cambridge Hamill was very successful, becoming a Wrangler in 1945 and achieving a distinction in Part III the following year. She continued to study at Cambridge working for her doctorate. In 1948 she was awarded a Newnham research fellowship and she was awarded her doctorate in 1950. The year she received her doctorate, Hamill was offered an assistant lectureship at the University of Sheffield which she accepted. She was to spend four years at Sheffield being promoted to a Lecturer in Mathematics in 1952. J A Todd supervised her research work at Cambridge and in [3] he describes the work of her doctoral dissertation:- This work contains a detailed study of the finite primitive collineation groups which contain homologies of period two. Starting with an analysis of the geometrical configuration formed by the centres and the invariant primes of the homologies, she was able, by a very thorough and careful investigation, to obtain, for each of the groups, the distribution of the operations in conjugate sets, and to make the nature of these operations clear.

Other Resources The favorites for the 1976 Olympic figure skating championship were Dianne de Leeuw of the Netherlands, who had beaten Hamill in the 1975 world championships, and Christine Errath of East Germany, the 1974 world champion. However, Hamill took the lead in the compulsory figure program, increased with a perfect score of 6.0 on her short program, and turned in a solid free skating performance to win the gold medal. She also won the world championship later that year. The U. S. champion from 1974 through 1976, Hamill developed a new move, a spin that turns into a sitz-spin, which became known as the "Hamill camel." The bobbed hairstyle that she wore during her Olympic performance started a brief fad. Hamill retired from competition after 1976 and skated with the Ice Capades. She married Dean-Paul Martin, son of singer Dean Martin.

Dorothy Hamill Interview continued You were 13 when you decided you wanted to win a gold medal? I think I dreamed about competing at the Olympics, maybe hoping to win a gold medal. Not that I ever thought that I would, but I dreamed about it. Somebody must have thought you would. Somebody must have helped you to believe in yourself. I don't think so, no. Maybe my coach in this subtle way.
I had a very tough, tough, tough, tough coach in the early years. video audio His name was Gus Lussi, and his way of complimenting you and letting you know that you were doing well was by asking you to demonstrate. He was a phenomenal technician. He could teach spins the way nobody, nobody I mean, they don't teach kids how to spin anymore. And he was a phenomenal jumping coach as well. So he would call me over and ask me to demonstrate. And then that's how I knew that he thought I was good. At some point you had to make a commitment, at least to yourself, that you were going to go for this. I was always committed, yes. Even when I was on the world team two years before the Olympics, with ice skating you just never know that you're going to make it. And even then I thought, 'Well gee, I hope I make the Olympic team in 1976." There was never any thought that, "Yes I'm going to make the team and yeah I could win a medal. " You know

Return to Math Index Math and Games of Ancient Civilizations Tamara Werner Academic Setting For readers that are hoping to use my unit, I want to explain some statistics. These statistics have everything to do with why a lot of my students are having a hard time with academics in school. The majority of parents in the West Gate Community make below $25,000 annually. Actually 43% of the parents make this low wage. I hope that you can see how these children come from poor backgrounds. For a family of five or more, they make less than a teacher does. Parents who send their children to Truman make a low wage because most of them have only a high school diploma. Exactly 42% have such a Diploma. This seems low to me, because I come from a background where everyone at least gets through high school and graduates. Most even go and get some college education. But with the West Gate Community, many of them do not have that opportunity to be able to finish all their schooling. Then again we go back down with 19% not even finishing high school.

"Dorothy's special gift was her power, her straight back, and that fresh style that she could create with her movement over the ice," says 1968 Olympic champion Peggy Fleming on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Dorothy Hamill was from 'do to toe the American ideal of a 1970s icon. As a child, she wanted to be a famous ice skater. She succeeded splendidly when, as a teenager, she captured the hearts of the American public by winning a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. Dorothy Hamill won gold in the 1976 Olympics in Austria. Following the Games, Hamill became a marketing sensation when her hairdo, a distinctive wedge cut, made a fashion statement. Millions of young girls copied her 'do, which looked like a bowl haircut. She also became the first female athlete to sign a $1 million-a-year contract, with the Ice Capades, which she would later purchase and manage. But her public self-assurance often belied stage fright, loss of confidence and excessive self-criticism. "Dorothy had a strong handicap in that she was negative," said her coach, Carlo Fassi. "She had to be pushed and always said she couldn't win in competition. She was her own worst enemy. Frankly, I didn't think she could do it, either, for a long while."
