He graduated in 1603 but he remained at Oxford until 1615 when he received a divinity degree. Gunter was ordained and became Rector of St George's Church in Southwark in 1615. He held this Church position until his death. In addition to being Rector of St George's Church, Gunter became professor of astronomy at Gresham College London in 1619, also holding this post until his death. A colleague and friend of Briggs , Gunter published seven figure tables of logarithms of sines and tangents in 1620 in Canon Triangulorum, or Table of Artificial Sines and Tangents . The words cosine and cotangent are due to him. He made a mechanical device, Gunter's scale, to multiply numbers based on the logs using a single scale and a pair of dividers. Edmund Gunter Life Born in 1581, died in 1626. Was an English mathematician, educated in London (Westminster) and Oxford (Christ Church). He graduated in 1603 but he remained at Oxford until 1615 when he received a divinity degree and was ordained. He became Rector of St George's Church in Southwark in 1615. He held this Church position until his death, although his main interest remained mathematics. Four years later, Gunter assumed the post of professor of astronomy at Gresham College London. He also held this title until his death. Many of his achievements were widely used in navigation by seaman, and in surveying land. Accomplishments 1618 - Invented a small portable quadrant 1620 - Gunter published seven figure tables of logarithms of sines and tangents in Canon Triangulorum, or Table of Artificial Sines and Tangents. He plotted a logarithmic scale along a single straight two foot long ruler. He added and subtracted lengths by using a pair of dividers, operations that were equivalent to multiplying and dividing.
