Eerst een fervent aanhanger van de Jugendstil . In Parijs ontmoette hij Picasso en Braque en werd door hen beïnvloed. Hij werd een overtuigd aanhanger van het kubisme , bleef niet bij het uiterlijke van compositie en geometrische opbouw staan, maar probeerde daarin een innerlijk beleven en aanvoelen te leggen. Na een periode van analytisch kubisme en papier collés kwam Gris tot het synthetisch kubisme. Volgens zijn eigen woorden trachtte hij het abstracte te concretiseren, uit het algemene het individuele te halen en met elementen van geest en verbeelding te werken. Zo benaderde Gris dicht de abstracte kunst zonder gevoelens en intellectuele grondslag te verwaarlozen. Zijn kleuren zijn eerst helder en lichtend, maar worden later, toen hij al heel ziek was, melancholisch. Hij illustreerde veel boeken o.a. van Gertrude Stein, Armand Salacrou en Tristan Tzara. La Reliquia era stata trasportata a Torino da Emanuele Filiberto, nel 1578, quando elesse il capoluogo piemontese a capitale del suo regno, ma i lavori per dare una collocazione fissa e stabile al Telo si protrassero sino al 1694. I Savoia, custodi del Lenzuolo, lo veneravano profondamente e la cappella divenne simbolico punto di unione tra i due poteri, temporale e spirituale: fu collocata tra l'apice della navata maggiore del Duomo e l'appartamento del monarca. Guarini lavorò sul precedente progetto di Bernardino Quadri e si basò sull'idea della Sindone come estrema testimonianza della sofferenza di Cristo per il genere umano, sviluppando un percorso ascetico di redenzione e di innalzamento verso la gloria divina. L'accesso alla cappella era possibile da due scaloni speculari che si dipanavano dal fondo delle due navate laterali del Duomo.

Sull’importanza dell’opera del Guarini a Messina di Michele Palamara La Sicilia, grazie alla sua posizione geografica, sempre al centro di interessi militari e commerciali, è stata nell'arco dei secoli campo di sperimentazione artistica di popoli di cultura diversa, e quindi importante veicolo culturale internazionale. Il lungo dominio prima aragonese e poi spagnolo è stato fondamentale per la formazione dei più grandi architetti siciliani: Matteo Carnalivari e più tardi Ernesto Basile, fra tutti. Ma è anche vero che durante questa lunga koinè durata quasi mille anni la Sicilia ha dato e non solo ricevuto. Tanti sono, infatti, gli anni se si sommano anche quelli di comune dominazione araba e quelli transitori normanni, svevi e angioini nei quali non si si arrestarono i rapporti fra Spagna e Sicilia. Un esempio è l’opera del padre teatino Guarino Guarini svolta a Messina fra il 1660, anno del suo arrivo a Messina, e il 1662, anno in cui portava a termine la facciata della Chiesa dell’Annunziata dei Teatini. Guarini, Guarino (b. 1591, Cento, d. 1666, Bologna) Guercino (a nickname meaning "the squinter", originally Giovanni Francesco Barbieri), Italian painter of the Bolognese school. He was self-taught but developed precociously. Despite the fact that he spent much of his life in Cento, a small provincial town between Bologna and Ferrara, he managed to become one of the major artists of his day. He was early inspired by the classical reforms of Lodovico Carracci but his pictures were full of movement and intense feeling. In 1621 Pope Gregory XV summoned him to Rome where he stayed until 1623, trying to balance his own dynamic temperament with the rarefied manner of the classical school. The works he produced in Rome such as Aurora, in the Ludovisi's country house were perhaps his most original paintings. After Gregory's death in 1623, he went back to Emilia, his energy gradually seemed to dissipate and his painting became more controlled. On the death of Guido Reni (1642) he moved to Bologna where the dominant climate was coldly classical. Altering his art to suit this atmosphere, Guercino became the leader of its academic art world.
