Feedback Significant Scots David Gregory GREGORY, DAVID, An anecdote is told of David Gregory of Kinnairdie, Dr Gregory’s father, which it would not perhaps, be altogether proper to omit. He had, as was remarked at the beginning, a turn for mathematical and mechanical subjects, and during queen Anne’s wars had contrived a method to increase the effect of field ordnance. He sent it to the Savilian professor, his son, wishing his opinion, together with Sir I. Newton’s. Gregory showed it to Newton, who advised him earnestly to destroy it, as said Newton, "Any invention of that kind, if it even were effectual, would soon become known to the enemy, so that it would only increase the horrors of war." There is every reason to think that the professor followed Newton’s advice, as the machine was never afterwards to be found. It is a more singular circumstance, and indeed without parallel in the scientific history of Scotland, that this old gentleman lived to see three of his sons professors at the same time, viz. David, the subject of the preceding sketch; James, who succeeded his brother in the chair of mathematics at Edinburgh; and Charles, professor of mathematics in the university of St Andrews.

'It was the first textbook composed on gravitational principles, and remodelled astronomy in conformity with physical theory' (DNB). Newton gave to Gregory for insertion in it his paper on lunar theory (printed here pp. 332-6) and the preface contains remarks by Newton 'on the prisca sapientia of the ancients and their knowledge of the inverse-square law of universal gravitation' (DSB). David Gregory (1661-1708) was a close friend of Newton, and as Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh 'was the first academical mathematician to teach Newtonian theories. His election to the Savillian Professorship at Oxford in 1691 was mainly due to the influence of Newton' (Babson catalogue).

Contemporary calf, rebacked, some slight soiling to preliminary leaves; a good copy with annotations and the ex libris of William Brown of the College of Edinburgh. First edition of the first text based on Newton's gravitational theory. Gregory collaborated with Newton, who thought highly enough of the work to include his "Lunar Theory", long the guide for practical astronomers in determining the moon's motions (see Correspondence of Isaac Newton, IV, pp. 327, 355). Gregory (1661-1708), favorite pupil and friend of Newton, was a mathematician and Savillian professor of astronomy at Oxford.
