In later life, he resided in Delphi, Carroll County, Indiana, had one son, Tenesson, and lived at least until 1860. Nothing further can be determined about his life. Although the commonplace book contains notes of an unnamed student from the University of Pennsylvania, 1817-1820, and a student named George Green (1799-1859) did attend the University of Pennsylvania's Medical Department from 1816 to 1821, receiving an M.D. in 1820, the facts known about his life are inconsistent with those determined about George Green, Sr., from internal evidence in the volume. The unnamed student was possibly some member of George Green's family. The student was also probably an apothecary, and, in 1824, considered establishing his family and practice in Caracas, Venezuela. Before the voyage to Caracas, the student was living in Philadelphia and working as apothecary to an "Institution" under a Dr. Griffitts. This may be a reference to the Southern Dispensary where Samuel Powel Griffiths was president of the Board of Managers at the time. Scope and contents The contents of this commonplace book of George Green, Sr., divide naturally into three series: medical lecture notes and examination questions, many from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, 1817-1820; copies or drafts of personal correspondence, 1824 and undated; and poetry, literary sentences, and miscellaneous writings, 1858-1860 and undated. Medical items in the volume include a copy of notes on Philip Syng Physick's lecture on inflammation, [1819?] and an undated copy of Benjamin Rush's opening lecture on the practice of medicine in which he outlines his objections to nosology. At the end of the volume are two sets of examination questions and answers used by the student for review of material. The questions on midwifery, obstetrics, and gynecology, [1817?], are probably derived from the lectures of Thomas C. James. The final medical section of the volume contains questions and answers, June 1817, based on the lectures of John Syng Dorsey on materia medica. The commonplace book also contains an extensive section of notesjfrom the lectures of Joseph Parrish on diseases of the eye, 1819, and a copy, dated December, 1820, of Parrish's 1819 lectures on diseases of the nose and throat. Another item of interest, possibly written by the unnamed medical student, is an unsigned draft of a letter from Caracas, Venezuela, dated February 1824. The letter describes the writer's good health and the possibility of making a living in Caracas as either an apothecary or a physician, then instructs the recipient to sell most of their stock and possessions, convey his resignation as apothecary to Dr. Griffitts, and request a testimonial. The remainder of material in the volume consists of essays, poetry, literary sentences, and drafts and copies of personal letters, 1858-1860 and undated. There is also one folder of undated letters, fragments, and printed material. All of the later material in the volume appears to have been written, copied, or compiled by George Green, Sr., of Delphi, Indiana. Provenance The George Green commonplace book was purchased by the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians from Lawrence Feinberg Rare Books and Manuscripts, Brooklyn, New York, in 1982. Before this, the volume was in the possession of Paul Brooks (otherwise unknown) who conveyed it to a Dr. Miles. The volume was catalogued in 1989. 1 volume, 1 folder 1817-1860 6/20/1990 jde

From Freedom of Choice to Integration

(National Historic Landmark photos, Photos by Susan Salvatore) I n the early 1830s, Thomas "Daddy" Rice, a white actor, began caricaturing blacks in his stage performances. One of his characters, a black man named "Jim Crow," would become synonymous with legalized segregation in this country. During the so-called Jim Crow era of the late 19th through mid-20th centuries, separation of the races in public transportation, parks, restaurants, and other public places was either required by law or permitted as a cultural norm. Public schools were no exception to this rule. School systems across the South were typically segregated. After 1896 these schools were supposed to adhere to the separate but equal rule established by the United States Supreme Court in Plessy v. Ferguson , but in reality, the schools for blacks were most often inferior to the schools for whites. It was this inequality that galvanized the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to begin the process of dismantling Jim Crow through the court system in the early 20th century. The New Kent School and the George W. Watkins School, located in New Kent County, Virginia, are associated with the most significant public school desegregation case the U.S. Supreme Court decided after

Determining the Facts
Reading 1: History of Charles C. Green v. County School Board of New Kent County, VA
In the mid-1950s, life in New Kent County was divided by a "color line." Blacks and whites were born in separate hospitals, raised and educated in separate schools, and buried in separate cemeteries. Such separation had been legalized by the U.S. Supreme Court's Plessy v. Ferguson decision in 1896, but only if facilities for the two races were equal. During the 1940s, the Virginia State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the state headquarters of the nation's premier civil rights organization, filed numerous lawsuits to force Virginia to "equalize" the public facilities used by blacks and whites. These suits were generally successful, however, the rulings applied specifically to the districts involved instead of addressing the overall problem. In the 1950s, NAACP lawyers switched tactics and began attacking segregation outright, arguing that separation of the races was itself unconstitutional. In 1954, this new legal strategy led to the consolidation of five cases under one name, Oliver Brown et al. v. the Board of Education of Topeka

At least that is how it seems for the Galapagos Islands tortoise that scientists call Lonesome George. Related Resources Galapagos Intro Turtles The islands were named for the large land turtles that live on them. At one time, the islands were home to about fifteen different kinds of land turtles. The largest island, Isabela, has five different kinds of tortoises. But, Lonesome George is not one of them. He comes from a smaller island called Pinta. Scientists found George almost thirty years ago. Humans and non-native animals had caused much damage to the environment on his island. Some animals and plants had disappeared. Lonesome George was the only tortoise found on Pinta.

School
In 1801, at the age of eight years, young George Green started school at Mr Goodacre's Academy in Nottingham. George's father was a baker in the town and the school fees must have been a considerable expense for him. Perhaps George was already showing signs of the genius for mathematics that became evident in his later life. His cousin, William Tomlin, writing after George Green's death, said that
'at a very early age . . . he pursued with undeviating constancy the same as in his mature years an intense application to mathematics.'
Mr Goodacre was a noted teacher and one who encouraged scientific enquiry, equipping the school with such instruments as a barometer, thermometer, air pump, an orrery to show the motion of the moon and planets and astronomical telescopes. George flourished at the school and William Tomlin tells us that George's 'profound knowledge in the mathematics' soon exceeded his schoolmaster's. However, George attended the Academy for only four terms, leaving at the age of nine years to work in his father's bakery.
A Working Miller
The bakery prospered and in 1807 Mr Green bought a plot of land in Sneinton, then a village outside of the town of Nottingham, where he built the fine brick windmill which still stands to this day. Later the family moved out of the town to a splendid new house next to the mill. At some time Mr Green appointed as mill manager William Smith who took residence in the cottage built onto the side of the mill. He had a daughter Jane who, at the age of twenty two, bore George Green a daughter. Jane and George never married although over a relationship lasting some sixteen years they had seven children in all. Perhaps old Mr Green did not approve of his son marrying the daughter of an employee. Or perhaps it has something to do with George's other life as a mathematician. As we shall see George eventually became a Fellow at Cambridge University, a condition of which at that time was that one had to be unmarried.

George Green and mathematics
by Rev. Dr. John Polkinghorne FRS George Green (1793-1841) was the son of a baker who left school after only four terms to work in his father's mill at Sneinton, Nottingham. He continued to study mathematics alone, and in 1828 published his first and greatest work "An Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism". At the age of forty he entered Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, took his degree with high honours in 1837, and then resumed his research. His health failed and he returned to Nottingham where he died at 3 Notintone Place, Sneinton (the street where William Booth had been born some twelve years earlier).
Green's Mill has been restored to fully working order, and there is a small science museum for children at its base.
A civic service of thanksgiving was held in St Stephen's Church, Sneinton on 13th July 1993, at which the following address was given. But the work of George Green illustrates an even more remarkable principle than that of the irresistible assertion of mathematical talent. In his celebrated essay of 1828 Green wrote that

"Molly Ivins, Al Franken, and Michael Moore are mere gadflies compared to Nation columnist AltermanÂ…and New York politico Green, who issue a sweeping, powerful indictment of Bush 43...Carefully researched and plenty passionate: a veritable bible for Bush-Bashers."

Kirkus Reviews

"The two progressive champions make no effort to hide their dislike of Bush, but the weight of their evidence and their reasonable tone makes it difficult to dismiss them as ideologues. Alterman and Green provide up-to-the-minute information on several issues. From this voluminous record emerges a portrait of Bush as an ideological bully who knows how to 'fake left and drive to the right,' passing himself off as a populist while launching initiatives that benefit only his hardcore supporters."

Publisher's Weekly
From the book's jacket flaps. When George W. Bush became President in January 2001, he took office with a comfortably familiar surname, bipartisan rhetoric, and the promise of calming a public shaken by the convulsions of impeachment and a contested election. Then nine months later, after the tragedy of 9/11, both the country and the world looked to him for leadership that could unite people behind great common goals.

You are here: Nfa History Bioscopes Presenters Bioscope Presenters: George Green George Green was probably one of the most successful of the showmen who pioneered the cinematograph on the fairground. With Randall Williams he was one of the original pioneers of fairground cinema, when he exhibited moving pictures at the Carnival building in December 1896. According to a letter from his son Herbert in 1946, George Green visited London with his brother John in the autumn of 1896 and purchased a theatrograph of Robert W. Paul. After many hours of practice the family exhibited films in the Carnival during the Christmas festivities, however, it did not appear on the fairground until 1898. Although George Green travelled several large shows, including the ex-Leo American Exhibition, the most extravagant was one he purchased from President Kemp in 1913, the Theatre Unique. This show was advertised for sale in the World's Fair at the beginning of August and the For Sale column provides us with a detailed description of the show, its seating capacity and interior decorations. George Green travelled the Theatre Unique with the ex-Leo show and replaced the original ground booth show. The decline in popularity of these shows is illustrated by the continual For Sale notices made regarding these shows.
