George Green 's father, also called George Green, was a baker in Nottingham. After serving his apprenticeship to a baker in Nottingham George Green Senior had married Sarah Butler (the mathematician's mother) in 1791 and Sarah's father had helped George Green Senior to buy his own bakery in Wheatsheaf Yard in Nottingham. George and Sarah had one son and one daughter. The son was George Green, the mathematician and, although the date of his birth is unknown, he was baptised on 14 July 1793. His sister Ann was born two years later and the family were reasonably prosperous with the bakery business being successful. In September 1800 there were riots in England when food prices were high and people did not have enough to eat. The corn dealers and bakers were blamed for keeping back food until the prices rose even higher and crowds of people broke into bakers and tried to steal food. George Green's bakery was attacked and the he wrote a letter to the mayor asking for protection (the spelling and capital letters follow Green's letter):- Sept th To the Right Worshipfull the Mayor and his Bretheren haveing all my Windows Broke Last night and being much thretend tonight with more mischief being done to me such as entering my House therefore Gentlemen I most Humbly crave your protection such as the Berer of this can explain to you from your Humble servant George Green.

3. Green George
green george. George into green george, who symbolically brings the season of spring into their villages. green george Day is traditionally celebrated April 24.
http://www.snpj.com/george.htm
Green George When Christianity was introduced into Slovenia, rituals involving the pagan god of spring were replaced by religious stories, which in turn were altered by the people into stories of folklore and legend. As the story was first told, Saint George was honored for his bravery in defeating a dragon. This was meant to be a symbolic representation of Christianity's defeat over heathenism. The legend of Green George, however, developed from this as a way to give the people an opportunity to celebrate the victory of spring over winter. They rejoice as the light of spring comes out of the darkness of winter and the warm weather overtakes the cold. With this in mind, the people of Slovenia changed St. George into Green George, who symbolically brings the season of spring into their villages. Green George Day is traditionally celebrated April 24. In Bela Krajina, the village boys cut down a tree and leave a few branches on top, pealing the bark off. The young girls decorate this tree with different handkerchiefs and streamers. The boys and girls then head to the village together. The boys are the first to enter. They carry in the decorated tree. Behind them, the girls enter singing. Green George, who is portrayed by a boy wrapped in ivy and the branches and leaves of a beech tree, is introduced to the village by his companions. Green George is tied to a grape vine branch and walked from house to house throughout the village. He is well hidden in the different greens. No one in the village can recognize him. They stop at every house, blowing into the whistles that are made from the bark that was peeled from the trees. They wish luck and health to all the people, animals and fields with the hopes that they will find a prosperous season of growth. The people thank them and give them gifts of bread, eggs, drinks and even money. Their songs echo through the village.

london Why is the film called George Washington?
It reminded me of being a kid and not knowing the truth about a man with so much myth and historical importance. Is it true that you were very keen to make 'George Washington' different from the stereotypical self-reflective indie film?
The actors and crew all lived together for the shoot of 'George Washington'. Would you wish to recreate such a set-up on your next film?
It all depends on the subject matter or organic approach to the material. In GW we were dealing with kids that needed to be open and feel comfortable with the environment in order to express themselves. Some films wouldn't need that. It does inspire a lot of conflict which we tried in GW to use to our advantage.

George Green
Journal Contributor George Green writes: I was born in a village called Newbottle (strange name that, as I am often found asking for one), in 1952. I grew up in post-WII North East England during the 50's and can even remember rationing still being in place. I attended Houghton-le-Spring Grammar School during the 60's and had aspirations to becoming an astronaut (!) or some sort of technical person. I of course stayed up all night and watched Neil and Buzz walking on the surface of the moon. Anyway, I ended up at teacher's college and did a year of mathematics teaching at a colliery village in England, just as the Apollo programme was closing and the Skylab one starting. I had followed the Apollo program from start to finish, and recall walking up a tiny little street in a fishing village on the Italian Riviera just after the 13 incident, hoping that the programme would not be halted. It was with great satisfaction that, back at college, I watched the Apollo 14 and 15 missions being the success that they were in 1971. In 1974 I secured a job with the New South Wales Department of School Education, Australia, and left the UK and my parents (I was their only son) on my twenty-second birthday. I told them I would go for two years, check it out, and if I did not like it, return to England. It is now the Year 2000 and I am still here, with a Geophysics degree and three daughters later, so I guess I like it here at the Antipodes.

Mother Earth, the ecological magazine of 3W, was probably the only green publication to be wishing its readers a Happy St George's Day. Why? Because to orthodox ecologists, fluent in "progressive" shibboleths, England's patron saint is suspect. A symbol of national chauvinism perhaps, and a dragon-slayer to boot. Probably a reactionary. But there is more to the St George legend than that....
Far from being exclusively "nationalist", St George links the English to many of the world's cultures, from the Turks, Russians and the Georgians through to the Pygmies of the Congo. Jean-Pierre Hallet, a Belgian who lived among the latter and became an honorary member of the Efe tribe, retells the following legend : A gigantic dragon-like monster kills the first man and his sons. His wife manages to escape from the rampaging beast. She gives birth to a son by miraculous means. The young hero swears vengeance on the murder of his father. He slays the monster with an iron spear that was originally obtained from God. His triumph over the dragon enables him to perform a deed that resurrects his father and the dragon's other victims. To show their gratitude, they install the saviour-son as the supreme ruler or king of the primordial Pygmy nation.
(Pygmy Kitabu, 1973)

George Green has been a USDA employee for the past four years, working in an Insect Biological Control Laboratory at the Western Cotton Research Laboratory in Phoenix, AZ. He started out as a student worker in 1999 and worked through the summer field season of 2000. He then made the decision to leave for a while to focus on school. In 2001, George was fortunate enough to be able to return back to the lab to work on a 180-day appointment until his status was changed to a student position again, and finally into a two-year appointment which he is currently on.
The work that George was hired to focus on is the study of distribution patterns of the Glassywinged sharpshooter ( a major crop pest which carries a bacteria that desiccates citrus, ornamental, and other important plants). This research has taken place in Moreno Valley, CA, and Fillmore, CA, with a focus on the eradication of this insect in these areas.
The work he has been allowed to do has not only broadened his knowledge of laboratory techniques, which include electrophoresis, ELISA assays, PCRs, Western Blots, and insect behavior observations, but it has heightened his awareness of the the inner workings of research techniques, publishing, and government work programs.
