German mathematician and linguist who discovered a new calculus. It was one of the earliest mathematical attempts to investigate n-dimensional space, where n is greater than 3. He also studied ancient languages and comparative linguistics.
Grassmann was born in Stettin, Pomerania (now Szczecin, Poland), and studied at Berlin. He became a schoolteacher in Stettin.
Grassmann learned and examined many ancient languages, such as Persian, Sanskrit, and Lithuanian. From his investigations he derived a theory of speech. He published a glossary to the Rig-Veda (Hindu sacred writings) 1873-75.

Grassmann, Hermann (18091877) Grassmann was born in Prussia (modern-day Poland) and attended the University of Berlin. However, his study of mathematics and physics was done on his own. He taught at a secondary school and worked on his research without support. In 1844, he published Die l ineale Ausdehnungslehre , which contained new concepts in geometric calculus. He introduced the n -dimensional vector space and new concepts and structures in linear algebra. Unfortunately, Grassmann's book was difficult to read and was largely ignored by other mathematicians. Disappointed by the rejection of his book, Grassmann moved away from mathematics, periodically returning to attempt to revitalize his work. Unfortunately, it was only after Grassmann died that other mathematicians realized the potential and scope of Grassmann's work and from its foundation built the subject of matrix algebra. Major publication: Die l ineale Ausdehnungslehre

Grassmann Algebra
What is Grassmann Algebra? Grassmann algebra is a mathematical system which predates vector algebra, and yet is more powerful than it, subsuming and unifying much of the algebra used by engineers and physicists. It has remained relatively unknown since its discovery over 160 years ago, yet is now emerging as a potential mathematical system for describing such diverse applications as robotic manipulators and fundamental physical theories. Where does its power come from? The intrinsic power of Grassmann algebra arises from its fundamental product operation, the exterior product. The exterior product codifies the property of linear dependence directly into the algebra. Simple non-zero elements of the algebra are products of linearly independent elements. For example, a simple bivector is the exterior product of two independent vectors; a line is represented by the exterior product of two independent points and a plane is represented by the exterior product of three independent points. The best original source to Grassmann's contributions to mathematics and science is his collected works: Grassmann, Hermann

Linear algebra
Linear algebra is the branch of mathematics concerned with the study of vectorss , vector spaces (or linear spaces), linear transformations, and systems of linear equations . Vector spaces are a central theme in modern mathematics ; thus, linear algebra is widely used in both abstract algebra and functional analysis . Linear algebra also has a concrete representation in analytic geometry . It has extensive applications in the natural sciences and the social sciences See also Glossary of linear algebra Table of contents 1 History

History
The history of modern linear algebra dates back to the years 1843 and 1844. In 1843, William Rowan Hamilton (from whom the term vector stems) discovered the quaternions . In 1844, Hermann Grassmann published his book Die lineare Ausdehnungslehre ... (for the complete title see References). to be continued k;k;
Elementary Introduction
Linear algebra had its beginnings in the study of vectors in Cartesian 2-space and 3-space. A vector, here, is a directed line segment, characterized by both length or magnitude and direction. Vectors can be used then to represent certain physical entities such as forces, and they can be added and multiplied with scalars, thus forming the first example of a real vector space.

Hermann Grassmann
April 15 September 26 ) was a mathematician physicist linguist , scholar, and neohumanist. Hermann Grassmann was born in Stettin (by chance, on the birthday of Leonhard Euler ) and died there in 1877. His father was Justus Günther Grassmann and his mother was Johanne Luise Friederike Grassmann (maiden name: Medenwald). Hermann Grassmann was the son of the school teacher Justus Grassmann, Gymnasial -Professor, who wrote several influential books on physics and mathematics and various notes ( Schulprogramme ) which influenced his son Hermann. According to a biographical sketch by H. Grassmann himself, he was slow in school, and his father pointed him to an career as gardener. However, he finished the Gymnasium with a high grade and went on to Berlin together with his brother studying theology. During that time his interest in mathematics arose and he wrote a treatise on the theory of the tides ( Theorie der Ebbe und Flut, His Geometrische Analyse Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz . The award was given on July 1 The main mathematical works of Grassmann is found in his two books on the theory of extensive magnitudes ( Die lineale Ausdehnunglehre, ein neuer Zweig der Mathematik
