We apologize for the aesthetics and hope that the information will still be of value to you. A proof that math opens doors Mark Clayton , Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Don't tell Evelyn Boyd Granville that math lovers are nerds. This child of the Great Depression and daughter of a janitor has a mission: neutralize the belief among today's students that being good at math makes you a social misfit. "There's a lot of peer pressure to be cool, to be like the rest of the crowd - and this whole word they've invented, 'nerd,' didn't exist in my day, thank goodness," says Ms. Granville, the first black woman in America to earn a PhD in mathematics, from Yale University in 1949. "You could be great at music at a young age, and nobody looks upon you as weird ... do they? We must get beyond this for mathematics. And I think we can."

Legends
Evelyn Granville Evelyn Granville is a mathematics and IT pioneer who began her career in academia, went on to prgramming challenges at IBM and ultimately worked on NASA's space program before returning to teach others. Granville joined IBM in January 1956, where she found programming to be a welcome challenge. She returned to Washington to be part of the team of IBM mathematicians and scientists who were responsible for the formulation of orbit computations and computer procedures, first for NASA's Project Vanguard and later for Project Mercury. After this, she returned to teaching, lecturing and writing, where she continues to inspire the next generation of academics and students with the beauty of mathematics.

Evelyn Granville Evelyn Boyd Granville was born on May 1, 1924. She is a mathematician, teacher, and scientist.
From Washington, D.C. she attended (a then segregated) Dunbar High School. Two of her mathematics teachers encouraged her interest in the subject after which Granville attended Smith College on a partial scholarship. In 1945 she graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She worked with Einar Hille in functional analysis, as her Ph.D. faculty advisor at Yale University.
Granville received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Yale in 1949, the same year Marjorie Lee Browne received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. They were the first Black women to receive doctorates in Mathematics in the United States. From there Granville spent a year researching at the New York University Institute of Mathematics and a part-time instructor in the math department of New York University (NYU). In 1950, Professor Granville was appointed as Associate Professor of Mathematics at Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee; where two of her former students went on to receive Ph.D.s in Mathematics, Vivienne Malone Mayes and Etta Zuber Falconer.
After two years of teaching, Granville went to work for the Diamond Ordnance Fuze Laboratories as an applied mathematician. In 1956, she worked for IBM on the Project Vanguard and Project Mercury space programs, analyzing orbits and developing computer procedures. During that time in southern California, Granville met the Reverend Gamaliel Mansfield Collins, a minister in the community church. They were married in 1960, and made their home in Los Angeles, the marriage ended in divorce. In Los Angeles, Granville had taken a job at the Computation and Data Reduction Center of the U.S. Space Technology Laboratories, studying rocket trajectories and methods of orbit computation.

    Evelyn Boyd Granville (1924 - )
Evelyn Boyd Granville was brought up in the African American community in Washington, D.C by her mother.
    Granville wrote :-
"As a child growing up in the thirties in Washington, D.C., I was aware that segregation placed many limitations on Negroes, ... However, daily one came in contact with Negroes who had made a place for themselves in society; we heard about and read about individuals whose achievements were contributing to the good of all people. These individuals, men and women, served as our role models; we looked up to them and we set out goals to be like them. We accepted education as the means to rise above the limitations that a prejudiced society endeavoured to place upon us. "
In 1949, Granville beacame the second Black American woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in mathematics. Euphemia Lofton-Haynes was the first and Marjorie Lee Browne the third.
Granville spent much of her life working for IBM as a member of the group responsible for writing computer programs to track the paths of vehicles in space.

In 1890 he was appointed resident tutor and lecturer in mathematics at Trinity College, Melbourne, and in 1900 acting professor of mathematics at the University of Tasmania, and of mining engineering in 1902. In 1903 he came to Christchurch to be senior mathematics master at Christ's College, a post he continued to hold until 1928. In the interim he was appointed lecturer in mathematics at Canterbury University College, 1908, and in the same year was made President of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury. A keen amateur astronomer, he became a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and also took a life-long active interest in the affairs of the Church of England.
