In 1984, through the Provincial Government Heritage Branch, the Saanich Historical Artifacts Society (SHAS) took possession of a 30' x 30' Corrugated iron, timber framed building from the British Columbia Buildings Corporation. Located behind the Queen's Printers at 563 Superior Street in Victoria B.C., it had been used as a Tinsmith Shop, but was scheduled for demolition. Upon examination the Heritage Branch discovered that it has high heritage value. The SHAS was requested to provide a suitable site for its safe keeping, future restoration and interpretation.
The historical significance of this structure can not be overstated.

William Gosset
A biography of the statistician William Gosset and his lifetime achievements including the t-test. Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format: MLA Written: Author: Steven Green
Abstract
This paper looks at the life of William Gosset who worked as a chemist in the Guinness brewery in Dublin in 1899 and who also carried out crucial experiments on statistics. It explores how the conditions of brewing gave Gosset an insight to work as a statistician and how he took his data from the different examples of brewing to experiment, which was the best combination of factors. In particular, it examines how these experiments led to the invention of the t-test to calculate and manage small samples for quality control in brewing and how under the name "Student", Gosset developed the form of the t distribution by a combination of mathematical and empirical work with random numbers, on the basis of the early application of the Monte-Carlo method.
From The Paper
"In 1903, Gosset, came up with methods that could calculate standard errors. In 1904 he wrote on the brewing of beer. After reading this new report written by William Gosset, Karl Pearson consulted Gosset and also they met Pearson in July of 1905. They discussed the developments and reports for a long time. Pearson, helped Gosset understand the theory of standard errors in less than two hours. Gosset after understanding the procedure went back to the brewery and practiced those methods to develop something new for the next year. The meeting was successful because Pearson motivated Gosset to take up the study of the law of error."

Biographical Notes
Bayes was a non-conformist minister in England. A version of what is now known as Bayes’ theorem was used in his paper "Essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances," published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London in 1764.
James Bernoulli was the first of the famous Bernoulli family of Swiss mathematicians. He wrote one of the early books devoted to probability, Ars Conjectandi , which was published after his death in 1713. Bernoulli formulated the version of the law of large numbers for independent trials, now called Bernoulli trials, and studied the binomial distribution.
Buffon was the director of the Paris Jardin du Roi and was best known during his time for his thirty-six volume work on natural history. Buffon's famous coin and needle problems are considered to be among the first problems in geometric probability.
Cardano, who lived in Italy, was a man of many interests: law, medicine, astrology, gambling, and mathematics. His book Liber de Ludo Aleae (The Book on Games of Chance), published after his death in 1663, contained perhaps the first mathematical analysis of gambling.

Tales of Statisticians
William S Gosset
13 June 1876 - 16 Oct 1937 Gosset earned a degree in chemistry at Oxford, and joined the Guinness brewery firm in 1899. His work for Guinness led him investigate the statistical validity of results obtained from small samples (previous statistical theory had concentrated instead on large samples). He took a leave of absence to spend 1906/1907 studying under Karl Pearson at University College, London. His publications in Pearson's journal Biometrika were signed "Student," not because of a Guinness company policy forbidding publication, as is often said, but more precisely because of a company wish to keep secret the fact that they were gaining an industrial advantage from employing statisticians. Gosset's most important result is known as the "Student's t" test or distribution, published in 1908. In these pages, we will drop the subterfuge and restore the discoverer's name to the discovery. We will call it "Gosset's t." His work founded the concept of quality control, which Neyman and others were later to develop more fully. In studying the distribution of yeast cells, he independently discovered the
