Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Florida. Don Diego Miruelo was thought to be the first to sail into Pensacola Bay. Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda believed to have entered bay and traded with the Indians. Panfilo de Narvaez and Alvar Nunez de Vaca, with about 240 followers, entered the bay. Panfilo de Narváez was commissioned by Spain to conquer Florida, sent his ships to Mexico, and led his force inland in search of gold. Disappointed and harassed by the indigenous people, they returned to the coast, built crude vessels, and set sail for Mexico. They may have fought local Indians who used slings and darts. Captain Diego de Maldonado returned to Pensacola Bay each summer until 1543 in search of survivors from the Hernando de Soto expedition. He was the first European to stay any length of time. Soto never showed. August 14, Don Tristan de Luna y Arrelano, with 1500 would-be settlers and soldiers, made the first attempt to colonize Pensacola Bay, and named it Bahia Santa Maria de Filipina. It lasted two years. Fort abandoned in 1561. Emanuel Point Ship

Born at Vera Cruz, Mexico, 9 September, 1731; d. at Bologna, Italy, 2 April, 1787. At the age of seventeen he entered the Society of Jesus Jesuits were expelled from Mexico in 1767, Father Clavigero went to Bologna, where he founded a literary academy and pursued diligently his documentary studies in Mexican aboriginal history. He complied there his "Historica antica del Messico (Cesena, 1780), in opposition to the works of De Pauw, Raynal, and Robertson. While the "Historia antica" is the principal work of Clavigero, he had already published in Mexico several writings of minor importance. After his death there appeared "Storia della California", less appreciated but still not to be neglected by students. The "Ancient History of Mexico" made considerable impression and met with great favor. Following the book of the Cavaliere Boturini he included a list of sources, paying particular attention to the Indian pictographs, on tissue and other substances, forming part of the Boturini collection, and increasing the list by specimens then extant in various parts of Europe. The catalogue of Indian writers is also taken from Boturini, as Clavigero is careful to state. While materially enlarged since then, and though much additional information has been gained, his catalogue always remains of value. Finally he added a history of the conquest of Mexico. While other Jesuit Beristain de Souza, Biblioteca hispano-americana septentrional (Mexico, 1816 and 1883); Diccinario universal de Historia y Geografia (Mexico, 1853).

Father Kino Visits Sor Juana and Her Friend, Siguenza y Gongora
Acrilic by Marta Arat In 1680, Father Kino, well-known for establishing missions in today's states of Arizona and Sonora, visited Sor Juana while a large comet was apparent in the night sky. He, like most scientists of this time, believed more in astrology than astronomy. He wrote about the comet as a messenger to the earth of bad fate to come. Sor Juana's long time friend, Sirguenza y Gongora, tried to convince the people that the comet was a natural object in space and not a cause for alarm. Sor Juana endorsed Father Kino's belief. Why? I AM A SUFI, I AM A MUSLIM (VHS) 1996. 52 min. sd. color. #53150 Introduces Sufism, a branch of Islam which is much less well known in the West than some of the more fundamentalist forms which are frequently in the news. Travels to India, Pakistan, Turkey and Macedonia to explore exactly what Sufism is and observe how it is practiced in various parts of the world today. Featured in the program are the whirling dervishes of Turkey, who find God through ecstasy; ecstatic fakirs in Macedonia, where there is a big revival in popular Sufism; and the vital role of music in Sufism in India and Pakistan. I AM BECOME DEATH: THEY MADE THE BOMB (VHS) 1995. 55 min. sd. color. #64990 On July 16, 1945, in the remote New Mexico desert, America detonated its first atomic bomb. The Manhattan Project had created the ultimate weapon. Only a handful of the 100,000 people on the 2.2 billion dollar project were aware of its implications. This documentary is about a few of those people, cloistered at Los Alamos, New Mexico; a place that officially did not exist. Several of these men reveal their lives at Los Alamos, relating stories of professional contradictions and personal jealousies, and how each came to terms with the atomic era's most immediate consequence: the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I AM PABLO NERUDA I AM MY OWN WOMAN (VHS) 1993. 91 min. sd. color. #56680 Charlotte von Mahlsdorf (born Lothar Berfelde in 1928) was brought up by her Nazi father who wanted to make her into a proper soldier. She grew up in Nazi Germany, survived World War II, the East Germany of the Stasis and now the re-united Germany of the skinheads. Filmmaker Rosa von Praunheim relates the incredible life story of a warmhearted human being who is also a courageous outsider and born fighter. In German with English subtitles.
